A gentle smile took over Graypaw's features in response to Primroselight's enthusiasm. Hunting was everything that she had thought it would be; a perfect combination of a proper form, silence, skill, and luck. She wasn't embarrassed at all that she had missed the mouse. Tightening her form and working on her timing would definitely ensure more successful catches in the future. Her gray ears tilted in her mentor's direction as the warrior gave her instructions. Prey was ready and waiting to be caught between the tree trunks and stones that were scattered around the territory.
"Thank you. I'll stay close." Graypaw informed her mentor before lifting her nose again to let the scent of potential prey flood her senses.

A smell that she was strangely unfamiliar with seemed to overpower the scent of any other prey in the area. Her amber eyes narrowed to slits as she lowered her nose and looked around in confusion.
"Primroselight, what's that sce-?" Her voice wavered until she was completely silent as a large, foreign shadow loomed over her.
Before the gray she-cat could even whirl around to face the hostile newcomer, claws met her back. They ripped away at both fur and flesh, causing the apprentice to let out a cry of both shock and pain. She steadied herself on her paws, trying to push the throbbing sensation to the back of her mind. Primroselight needed help, and Graypaw wasn't willing to stand there while her mentor fought alone.

There was only one setback. She had absolutely no battle training. Getting into a fight with a predator on the first day out of camp with no experience whatsoever would be alarming and frightening for any apprentice. All she could do was listen to her mentor's frantic instructions and hope for the best. Graypaw let her hooked claws slip out of their sheaths as she sprinted towards the bird. In comparison to the thrush that was buried beside the tree a few mouse-lengths away from them, this bird was large and round with powerful, long wings that shot out if its sides. Its abnormally large eyes, perfectly shaped like a full moon, were full of nothing but hunger and bloodlust. Graypaw took the first opportunity she saw to launch herself at the owl, ready to strike.

She didn't hesitate to rake her claws along its exposed belly despite the fact that pain rushed through her body whenever she moved her muscles.

graypaw used "belly rake" on owl, dealing 7 damage and costing 10 stamina.

Happy that Graypaw was brave enough to help her, Primroselight thought quickly about her next move. What should she do? There was no doubt in her mind that protecting her untrained apprentice was her first priority. But Graypaw seemed to be managing fairly well for the fact that she was running purely off instincts. The owl, still startled by its realisation it had two opponents, was slow enough for them to battle. However, it still had one clear advantage - wings. SkyClan cats were known for their ability to flit through the treetops, almost as if flying, but it didn't quite have the same affect, and Primroselight hated climbing trees. The irregularity of the branches, the danger, the wind, all small things that, built up together and combined with a small mistake (which she was quite good at making) could lead to disaster.

Almost as if mocking her thought process, the huge bird swooped up yet again, away from where Graypaw had been clawing at it. Primroselight thought hopefully that it might've been retreating, fleeing form the battle, but she knew it was a naive idea. Just like it had done before, it swooped down, slashing its claws at the cream warrior. The whoosh of air under its wings as it dived had given her a little warning but, as with Graypaw, not enough time to react. Then an idea stuck her. Without waiting any more, ignoring the pain in her back, she leapt on top of the owl and held it down, raking at its back with unsheathed claws. The perfect battle move to take away its advantage. She hoped she could hold on for as long as possible as she shifted her grip slightly so it was completely pinned.

Remembering that her apprentice was with her, Primroselight - a little calmer now, but her instructions were still rushed and vague - called to Graypaw. "Try and slash at it if you're feeling up to it. I-I can hold on though if you're badly injured." The metallic tang of blood in the air gave her evidence otherwise, but her words were more a question of how much pain the young she-cat could cope with. They would both probably need to checked over by Beechpaw later, but winning the battle now was her main focus.

Graypaw was unable to relax, even as the large bird took flight once again. It used its wings to lift itself effortlessly above the ground. She kept her gaze locked on it, eyes narrowed as pain surged through her back once again from its previous attack. She had never considered the fact that her first fight would be with an owl. Running into predators was an unfortunate fate that most cats had, especially if they hunted regularly, but this was only her first day out. The apprentice could tell that her first stop would be the medicine den the moment that she arrived back at camp. Pain was something that every warrior had to get used to, but considering the fact that Graypaw was a newly-named apprentice, this sort of pain was foreign to her. It made her head spin and her vision blur slightly. She couldn't tuck her tail between her legs and run back into the nursery just because her back was stinging. She was training to become a warrior, and fighting was practically mandatory.

The shadow of the owl grew bigger as it swooped back towards the ground. Graypaw instantly put her focus toward defeating the enemy. This time, its merciless claws aimed for Primroselight. She had to hide back a slight wince as she watched the attack. The apprentice knew exactly what type of pain her mentor was feeling. The gray she-cat, tense and angered, began to lift a paw to strike the owl again. However, she was interrupted by Primroselight leaping directly at the owl and knocking it over. The warrior's strong paws kept the bird on the ground. No matter how much it tried to struggle and pathetically flap its feathered wings, it couldn't move. The owl was at a disadvantage. This was their opportunity to weaken it enough to possibly force it to give up.

"No worries, I can still help." Graypaw told her mentor, never letting her eyes leave the intimidating form of the owl.
She took the opportunity that was presented to her and lashed out at her opposer, letting her claws freely tear the brown feathers and pale flesh. She wasn't about to let this predator get away with any sort of victory for a battle that it had caused unprovoked.

graypaw used "front paw strike" on owl, dealing 6 damage and costing 10 stamina.

Primroselight didn't manage to hold onto the owl much longer, with its powerful wings flapping in her face, no matter how heavy or string she was. It struggled until it eventually broke free, possibly spurred to do so by Graypaw's attack. It rose slightly into the sky again, but the warrior wasn't about to let it get away, or regain its advantage of the sky. Rearing up on her hind legs, she slashed at the owl, mostly focussing on its wings to bring it back to the ground. This owl would not leave unscathed - it had attacked her apprentice, and she would defend her with all that she had. The huge bird ahead, unable concentrate on both cats at once, didn't attack either. Its wingbeats sped, sounding more and more panicked with each flap.

She could tell that it was scared, hopefully even considering fleeing. Almost as if it could read her mind, in one swift motion, it launched itself into the sky, leaving the two cats far below, nothing more than bad memories in the form of pinpricks in the distance. Primroselight let out a huge sigh of relief once she was sure it had fled, and turned to Graypaw.

"Graypaw! Are you sure you're okay?" The cream warrior asked, hoping for the best. It was undoubtable that the scent of blood hang in the air, but how much of it was cat blood, she wasn't sure. Luckily Graypaw had only taken one hit, but it would still hurt a lot. Primroselight knew first hand how much talon wounds stung. "We should probably get Beechpaw to check you out," she said, concern and worry showing on her face as she brushed her tail along the she-cat's back. "I'll get your prey, and you can lean on me on the way back if you want." Due to the amount of time the warrior spent with her family, she often forgot that she wasn't, in fact, a small cat. Beechpaw and Bloodstrike's huge bulk made her feel smaller than she actually was at times, even though she was probably about average.

Graypaw grimaced as the flapping wings of the owl managed to blow wind right into her face. It took off into the air for the second time, and the apprentice locked her eyes on it in case it made an attempt to swoop back down and attack one of them. She had no idea if she would be able to withstand another scathing from the bird. She turned her head, watching as Primroselight made the final attack on the owl. The powerful beats from its wings turned into confused, terrified flaps as it was instantly overpowered. Graypaw's heart began to soar when she noticed that the owl was retreating for good. That didn't mean that the pain desisted, though. No more than a second later, the gray she-cat let out a quiet hiss of pain as the stinging in her back became more prominent.

She immediately looked over at Primroselight. Her mentor was injured, too. The owl had put up quite a fight and left both of them with wounds, but all that mattered was that they had won. It honestly made Graypaw swell with pride to know that she had helped a warrior fight off a predator on her first day out of camp. Going back to the medicine den only meant that their training session would be ending early, but the apprentice figured that it would be wise to get their injuries treated as soon as possible.
"I'm okay, just some pain." Graypaw attempted to reassure the warrior.

She leaned on her mentor upon receiving the offer. That would certainly make it easier to get back to camp.
"Thank you," She sighed, "And thank you for protecting me."
