Repayments

Willowpaw trotted along, sniffing at the air.

RiverClan had been so kind as to let SkyClan temporarily stay with them. She really wanted to pay them back somehow. And her solution was to have a solo hunting trip.

Willowpaw was aiming to bring back at least some prey, but if a predator pops out of nowhere like they always do when she hunts, she would definitely have to run. No way was she fighting someone on her own.

Then again, her luck's been so bad for so long. Surely it can't continue on for any longer?

Willowpaw silently glanced over at where the river should be. Too bad it was dried up-she could only imagine how easy fish would have been to catch otherwise...

The soft rustle in the nearby grass caught Willowpaw's attention. She began to creep closer, belly close to but not brushing against the grass.

Spotting a small mouse, Willowpaw dropped into a crouch. Not a particularly large piece of prey, but it was still prey. She pounced.

Unfortunately, Willowpaw seemed to have startled the mouse. It suddenly locked eyes with her and proceeded to flee, much to her disappointment.

Oh well...At least prey running away is better than a predator showing up. Willowpaw assured herself.

Looking around, she spotted something small and green moving. Further investigation revealed the creature to be a frog.

Even worse than before, but...Prey was prey, right?

Despite her disappointment at her failure to find anything big, Willowpaw still crept towards the frog. She let herself get as close as she dared, then pounced.

Annoyingly, it was as if something had startled the frog as well. It suddenly fled just before Willowpaw hit it.

One more try and I'll call it a day. Willowpaw told herself. If this dragged on for any longer, a predator would come.

Another failure at catching...Willowpaw guessed it was harder catching prey in Leaf-Fall, but this was a little absurd.

To be fair, though, it was only two tries. And as long as no predator popped up, she was happy.

The next sound that caught Willowpaw's attention-her final try-was another frog. The little green creature stood on top of a rock, croaking loudly, as if mocking Willowpaw.

The Apprentice focused again and crept forwards, praying for the frog to not randomly hop away again. She pounced.

Finally, finally, Willowpaw's paws slammed onto the creature. She killed it in a bite and picked it up. Not much, but this would do for now. Besides, some at camp actually loved frogs, from what she's heard.
