This name had special meaning for her. Young Crowkit has no relation to her uncle, but Crowfur had been the one to patiently guide Ravenmist after her blinding, and turn her into the warrior she now was. He had been an excellent mentor, and she was determined to place the young kit with a warrior who would do the same.

“Let all cats old enough to catch their own prey gather beneath the Jaggedrock for a Clan meeting!”

Crowkit's ears perked up at the sound of a meeting being called, even more so that it was the deputy calling it. Whether or not this was an apprentice ceremony, it'd at least be a break in the day, a bit of new information to absorb and think about, but-- he and his siblings were all the right age, and he certainly hoped it was an apprentice ceremony, especially his apprentice ceremony. He was more than ready to move past the confines of the nursery and of kithood.

He smoothed out his fur just in case it was his ceremony; he wanted to look mature and professional, and leave a good first impression on whoever his mentor might be.

Ravenmist waited for every cat to gather before continuing. "Crowkit, please come forward." She waited for the young tom's pawsteps to cease before speaking again. "From this day forward, until you receive your apprentice name, you will be known as Crowpaw. Your mentor will be Smokespirit. He was a good apprentice, and I fully trust he will be a good mentor." She took a step back, smiling.

Crowkit took a step forward eagerly.

This is it! he thought, It is my ceremony! I get to become an apprentice!

And excited grin spread across his face as he received his new name, Crowpaw, and he immediately headed towards his new mentor, ready to do whatever he could to make sure the warrior liked him.

"Hello, Smokespirit!" He said, trying not to lean too hard into either formality or informality. He didn't know which his mentor would like yet, and he didn't want to leave a bad impression either way. "I'm excited to start training with you!"

His half nephews and nieces were successively ascending into apprenticeship. As each was promoted, his heart fluttered with rattling pride. Those were his kin. They'd serve the Clan well, make brilliant contributions. With Flintstar and Freckleface's new litter, Smokespirit's family had expanded... and he had willingly swelled the space in his heart for them all.

It was young Crowkit's turn.

And, this time,
his former mentor's ceremonial calling possessed something special for both of them.

"Smokespirit will be your mentor."

He hadn't registered it immediately.

...That's... oh.
That's me.

Initially, it came as a tingling shock. In a blinking flash, Crowpaw had sprung before him. Mentor and apprentice. Mentor and apprentice. Absently, numbly, he bowed forwards to sharply touch Crowpaw's nose – perhaps, a little too sharply. Smokespirit winced briefly at the chilly contact. If he was to perform well as a successful mentor, and nurture this apprentice into a successful warrior, he'd have to fortify himself. Not just physically... but mentally, emotionally, intellectually, too. They would help raise each other. A shuddering breath billowed from his maw, whiskers twitching in apprehension as it all clicked. Stars, was he ready for this? Would he do well enough? Was he the cat that Crowpaw deserved?

At the young tom's ardent beam,
Smokespirit's rigidness visibly slackened.

He had to have faith...
in both of them.
Together.

All would be well.

"Hey, Crowpaw." Although he tried to suppress the triumph that they had both been blessed with, it still broke free in the form of a rumbling trill. Apprenticeship, eh? It would be harrowing work – yet they would seek fulfillment, and it would arise. That was without doubt. He could already tell that this would be a passionate one. And Smokespirit valued that in him. "I.. I am, too." He retreated, unscarred eye glinting with the fresh gleam of this new opportunity, a rare tenderness present in his subtle smile.

"Rest as much as you can."
"We'll be working very hard tomorrow."

Crowpaw nodded at Smokespirit. He was having difficulty getting a good read on the warrior’s feelings, which concerned the new apprentice some. The tom had winced upon first contact, and there had been apprehension in his expression, but now his slight smile seemed genuine enough. Crowpaw was left a bit baffled by the mixed signals. Was Smokespirit excited to be his mentor or worried? And what kind of apprentice would he want-- one who obeyed orders to a fault or one who was a little more rebellious and free thinking? Did he want enthusiasm or calmness? Confidence or humility? Crowpaw just didn’t know yet what this cat wanted, and so he didn’t know what he should say or who he should be around him. He supposed he’d just have to wait for the moment; say little and stay neutral until he could fully parse his new mentor’s personality and opinions.

For the moment he simply tried to mimic the warrior’s smile, and said only very briefly, “Alright,”
