Herbs Won't Pick Themselves!

Mossbloom stood in the center of ThunderClan's camp as the sun stood high in the sky, watching her clanmates as they performed their various duties. A chilly wind blew through the camp, and her nose twitched with concern, was another cold snap on the way? If the forest frosted over, there was a chance that it would kill the new shoots that were unprotected. Rising to her paws, she looked around the camp quickly for any paws that seemed like they'd be able to help. Her eyes landed first on Cherryblossom, then past her to Coniferpaw. They would be perfect - hopefully they weren't terribly busy....

Moving over to the pair, she lowered her head slightly in greeting. "Hi Cherryblossom, Coniferpaw. I hope you both are well today?" Mossbloom paused for their responses before continuing. "I noticed the wind had a chill just now, and I'm afraid that the forest might frost tonight, killing the herbs that have started to grow. I'd like to collect what I can before that happens, would you two be able to join me and lend a paw? We'd be heading towards Snakerocks, which is largely unprotected from the cold winds, and I hope to be done well before the sun dips below the horizon. With your help, it won't even take that long." Looking between the two, Mossbloom's face was pleasant and hopeful that they would accept.

Herb Hunt Results List:

The cold chill that had blown through had prompted Cherryblossom to spend the morning hunting, and she spent sunhigh catching some of the weak rays of sun that provided little warmth. She ran her paw over her ears, cleaning them of any debris that may have gotten caught while hunting.
I was hoping that newleaf had finally driven off leafbare's chill, but I guess we still have a few more cold snaps in our future.

When she saw Mossbloom leave her den, she waved her tail in a greeting, smiling when the medicine cat approached her. When the medicine cat asked her for her help with gathering herbs, she sat up with a purr.
"Of course! I'm not busy right now."

Coniferpaw looked up from where he sat, large ears swivelling towards Mossbloom. Helping with a herb patrol? Eh, might as well. He shrugged his broad shoulders and stood up, joining the two older she-cats. "Sure, I'm happy to help." He'd never gathered herbs before, hopefully it wasn't too hard.

Mossbloom purred as the two agreed readily, and together they set off towards Snakerocks. As they grew closer to the treacherous area, Mossbloom slowed her pace, watchful for the adders that called the area home. Hopefully the cool breeze would keep them away from the rocks as they gathered the herbs, and they would be long gone before they ever tried to emerge. She had been keeping an eye on the area as the new sprouts emerged from the ground, and she quickly made her way over to a clump of strong-smelling herbs, dandelion, and pointed them out. "So you want to look for anything leafy, green, or brightly colored. Usually it will have a smell that stands out from the rest of the area. Don't eat anything that you don't recognize, I don't want anyone to get hurt or poisoned accidentally, okay?"

Cherryblossom followed Mossbloom out of camp and through the forest, enjoying seeing all of the lush new growth that newleaf had brought. With any luck, she'd find some herbs for the medicine cat among the new life. When the trio approached Snakerocks, she listened intently to Mossbloom's instruction and warning, and set off to find some herbs.

She didn't have to search too hard, and quickly came across the fragrant purple flowers of the lavender plant. She gave a trill of recognition and bit off some of the flowers and leaves before bringing them back to where they were piling their finds up.

Coniferpaw nodded at Mossbloom's instructions as she explained how this all worked. It didn't seem too hard, thankfully. He made sure to stay at a small distance from the rocks, not finding the idea of being killed by a snake particularly inviting. He lowered his head to the ground like a stalking fox, sniffing for any herbs.

After a little while of roaming around, an odd smell filled his nostrils. He didn't really know what herbs smelled like, but this was probably it. He followed the scent to a fuzzy-looking green plant. He didn't really know what it was, but he'd seen it in the medicine den back when he was ill so he grabbed it.

Casting another glance around, Mossbloom's gaze landed on a nearby patch of yarrow, a thin plant dotted with white flowers. Chirping as she moved to collect the thin stalks of the herb, she was pleased to find new sprouts under the fully grown ones. This would be plenty to last them a while, and yarrow was especially useful for many reasons.... One of which including if one of her companions got bitten by an adder while they were out here. Walking back to the growing pile with her prize, she was pleased to find that lavender and lamb's ear had been added. They would have a really good haul before much longer!

After setting her find down, Cherryblossom continued sniffing around, searching for something else to add to the growing pile of herbs. When she looked back, she saw her lavender, fuzzy-looking leaves, and a couple of spindly flowers with many buds. She sniffed around a bush, and soon she picked up the scent of chickweed. She bit off a few leaves and stems, before bringing them back to the growing pile of herbs.

Coniferpaw, happy with his latest 'catch', set off again to find some more to add to the pile. He wandered around for a little bit until he finally spotted some cobwebs hanging from a branch. Reaching out a large paw, he took a swathe of cobwebs and topped the herb pile off with it. He smiled somewhat proudly, this went a lot better than he'd envisioned.
