familiarity (closed hunting patrol)

Harefoot paced outside the warriors' den at midday. He'd been back for a few sunrises and was quite a bit stronger than when he first returned home. Although he was still skinny and though he tired quickly, the warrior decided he wanted to rejoin clan life as soon as possible and decided to go out on a hunt. Hopefully prey had returned to the forest while he was gone. And hopefully it would be filled with birds, squirrels, and mice - all much easier to catch than the fast hares in the mountains. The question was, who was available to go on patrol with him? A gentle smile curled his muzzle as he padded to the camp entrance, an age-old sign of a warrior looking for companions. He settled with his tail around his paws, wondering what the day would bring.

Ferretnose trotted up with a wide grin. "Good to have you back, Harefoot," she purred with sincerity. She allowed the tom to take the lead, but trailed close behind. It had been a while since she had seen him, but other than all the weight he had lost, he didn't look so much different. She was certain that all her growing would be a shock to him, at least. The tabby wasn't much taller, but her voice was stronger, more mature.

"Where do you think we should be going?" she asked enthusiastically.

Lynxtail's tufted ears perked. Ferretnose and Harefoot were standing by the camp entrance, a telltale sign that a patrol was gathering. The young warrior stood up, blinking rapidly as darkness stretched at the edge of his vision, and trotted towards the pair.
"Are you guys going on a patrol?" He chirped, his dull eyes momentarily brightening. His strength had been steadily draining, but that didn't mean he'd let himself fall behind on patrols, especially since there was so much prey running. "Do you have room for one more?"

Nettlepaw looked around camp, trying to find things to do. She disliked being idle for too long; it made her feel lazy, which was the last thing she wanted to be. Seeing a group starting to gather at the camp entrance for what she assumed was a patrol, Nettlepaw decided that would be the perfect activity to keep her feeling busy and useful.

"Hey," she said, approaching the group "Could I come along, too?"

Harefoot returned Ferretnose's smile, pleased to see a face he remembered from before the flood - she was an adult now, though. Was it weird that he was proud of her, even if she hadn't been his apprentice? Briefly, his mind flashed to Honeypaw and her death while he was gone. That thought saddened him, and he didn't want to be sad, so Harefoot busied himself with greeting the others who joined. "Sure! The more paws, the more prey we can catch!" He meowed pleasantly.

Harefoot turned to lead the patrol out of the camp, feeling a bit embarrassed at having the responsibility of leading. He could never have Beartooth's job, that's for sure. "Well," He responded to Ferretnose, still thinking as he walked. "I suppose we can have a look around the Great Sycamore? Perhaps there will be birds out. We can spread out around there." He decided with a firm nod and headed in the corresponding direction. Hopefully the prey would be running well today. It was the season of abundance, but Harefoot didn't want to get lazy.

The walk through the territory was pleasant enough; the weather was warm and the conversation amiable. Harefoot kept the group silent as they approached their target area, however, and he signaled with his tail that they should split up. He prowled slowly around the perimeter of the area, keeping an eye on the forest floor and his large ears perked. The scraping of a pigeon's small talons against a tree root caught his attention, and he slowly closed the distance between himself and his prey until he was satisfied with his odds. The warrior's heart began pumping faster and his mouth twisted into a lopsided smile. This would hopefully be his first catch back home. He froze in place, holding his breath unintentionally, and watched the bird peck and bad touch for its own prey. His eyes narrowed, his haunches wiggled, and then Harefoot leaped out from his cover and dug his claws into the bird before it could even utter a warning call. The tomcat triumphantly lifted the bird by a wing and carried back into tree cover to bury it safely. The taste of blood on his lips was a welcome victory.

Lynxtail sighed happily, padding near the back of the patrol. He was tired, yes, but the sun was warm on his back and the scent of prey was everywhere.
The young tom nodded as Harefoot signaled, turning off the worn pathway to creep through the undergrowth. The golden-brown warrior stumbled across the scent of a foraging squirrel moments later and settled down to wait for it to move closer. His patience rewarded him, and Lynxtail pounced the moment the russet-furred creature scampered into sight. He dug a shallow pit and buried his prey before continuing deeper into Thunderclan territory.

Ferretnose was happy to mosey along in the good weather, and even happier to have her clanmate home. It was a ray of sunshine in dark times. She found a prime hunting spot and set to work immediately, crouched in the undergrowth and waited patiently. There was a strong squirrel scent slightly upwind of her, and she quietly crept through the brush towards it. The squirrel paused for a moment and stood up on its hind legs. With her chance in sight, she waggled her haunches and pounced.

With the squirrel still wiggling in her paws, she nipped its neck. Burying her kill, she looked around to check on the rest of the party.

Ferretnose hunted a squirrel, it was... successful!

As soon as they left camp, Nettlepaw turned all her attention to doing the best job she could catching prey for the clan. She wanted to make sure she was doing her duty and putting in as much effort as she could to helping her clan prosper. Catching sight of a squirrel scrambling around on the forest floor, Nettlepaw dropped into a crouch, moving closer bit by bit. When she was close enough, Nettlepaw pounced.

Harefoot continued his search for prey, pausing when he caught the scent of mouse on the breeze. He followed the trail until it smelled fresh, as though the mouse had just passed by. He peered through the undergrowth and his eyes narrowed when he spotted his prey chewing on a seed in a small patch of sun. It was completely oblivious to his presence, and he intended to keep it that way. Harefoot crouched low to the ground and sprang onto his target, landing expertly on its neck and killing it instantly. He quickly buried it and lifted his nose to the wind. For a third try.

A series of rustling in the undergrowth caught Lynxtail's attention, and his tufted ears twitched. He settled down into the bushes once more, his short tail twitching in anticipation. Only a short while later, a large, black and white flop-eared rabbit hopped into the open, it's mouth full of... whatever rabbits ate. The young tom pounced swiftly, killing it with one bite. "Yes!" Lynxtail exclaimed, looking down at his second catch with pride. He didn't want to risk burying the bunny and losing it to a passing scavenger, but it seemed like he had no other choice, so he regretfully buried it and continued walking. The golden tom parted his jaws to taste the air. Hopefully, he'd be able to snag another catch before he met up with the others.
