Owlpaw's Hunting Assessment (Closed)

Marshstorm padded over to where the apprentices were. The soft light of morning glowing through the tree leaves as he stopped in front of them and gestured towards Owlpaw with his tail.
"Owlpaw. Come with me, today is your assessment." He mewed firmly, but there was a small smile on his muzzle that stopped him from being overly intimidating as he tilted his head to tell her to follow before he padded from the camp walls and up the gorge. Towards a small patch of forest that rustled with creatures large and small.

He paused, then sat down in the middle of the small clearing, his gaze settled on Owlpaw once more.
"Alright Owlpaw, for your assessment, I want you to catch one mouse and one bird or squirrel." He explained calmly. "I will of course be watching you the entire time, and judging you based on technique, tracking and swiftness. Take great care, but I know you'll do well. You have until sunhigh." He flicked his tail in a calm dismissal to let his apprentice get a head start.

Owlpaw was a bid nervous for her assignment but she knew she had learned a lot since her first time and she knew she would make her mentor proud she looked up at him, and was proud to be mentored by him so she won't let him down! A mouse, bird and squirrel that was all she had to do. It was not even bare leaf so she could do this!

She started to cent the air for a cent of prey.
There! She was lucky! She quickly followed the cent that belonged to a mouse and started to slow down one she got closer. There! A thick grey mouse was searching for some food between the leaves! She quietly got closer and was now a vox tail away from the animal. If she would pounce she could maybe catch it...
She jumped for it. Her claws unsheeted as she quickly killed the little thing and proudly stood up ready to bring it back to the place where she last saw Marshstorm. She had decided that that was a nice spot to burry her fresh-kil.
Proud she walked back and buried her prey only to stumble over a loose log. She stood up in embarrassment and looked around hoping Marshstorm did not see that.

Marshstorm followed his apprentice quietly. His dark body blending perfectly into the shadows of the foliage as he watched Owlpaw's movements with a critical eye. He had no doubts that Owlpaw was ready to become a warrior, this assessment was strictly formality, but one that all cats needed to go through. His tail twitched when she jumped for a mouse scuffling about.

Of course she caught it with ease. He choked back a purr of pride. Silently he slipped by Owlpaw into a long row of bushes, his paws and pelt silent despite all the leaves as he shifted through them to a new vantage point.

Owlpaw focused herself again, no more stumbling now as she smelled the air trying to get any type of cent in her nose, even if it was not what Marshstorm wanted she would still catch it the more the clan had to eat the better. She find out soon that with her stumbling al the prey had fled the close area.

Owlpaw had walked for a while and was now close to the Skyclan border, not exactly there but close, surely here it would go a bit better. She smelled the air again and was immediately greeted with the cent of bird, above her? She looked up and there it was not aware of her presence on a nice, low branch of a tree.
Owlpaw smiled, this bird was sitting there so nicely Starclan must have sent it to her. She looked at a tree that seemed strong enough to support her and climbed, almost like a Skyclan cat so easy.
Now in the tree Owlpaw silently sneaked towards towards the bird she could not identify as a wren.

When she was ready to jump, she froze, as she looked down, she broke, this place, the smell. Around here she had seen her father die fighting of that rouge for her. From a tree brach she had been looking at him, helplessly, from a tree branch she had been hearing his words telling her to flee, to get reinforcements. From here she had seen her father for the last time, alive at least.

When she shook it of and jumped she missed, her memory's blurring her vision and she fell. She looked down to the ground that helpless feeling wrapping around her once again as she hit the forest floor.
It did not hurt, in compression whit  what she was feeling inside it was just a small, it hurted like a kitten who would pounce at her tail, she shook her head. This place was making her sick, so close to the Skyclan border.
She quickly ran away form it, not caring what Marshstorm might think of her, she just ran when she could sense nothing but the forest and Thunderclan around her she stopped. Caught her breath and looked up again. She would not be beaten so easily, she would show Marshstorm that he could be proud by catching that star clan dammed Squirrel and Bird,
But not in tree's close to Skyclan.

As Marshstorm shadowed his former apprentice, he felt some slight apprehension the closer she got to the border. While he didn't expect her to cross it, the same couldn't be said for any SkyClan cat who wouldn't be aware that this was her assessment. He kept a wary amber eye trained on the SkyClan border while also taking care to observe Owlpaw and give her the attention she deserved.

Which nearly ended with him breaking cover to rush over and comfort her. The distress in her body language as she froze, then fell, agonised him. Despite the relief that flooded his pelt as she stood and bolted, showing that she hadn't been physically harmed. He worried about her mentally as he followed. Appearing and vanishing in the shadows like a ghost until she finally stopped. He blinked, then made to step out of his cover until he caught her gaze. Immediately looking away to break the contact and shifting deeper into the shadows.

He knew that determined look. She wasn't done, wasn't finished, and it would be cruel of him to deny her the chance.

Owlpaw got herself together and focused herself on the air, she had thought for a second that she had seen something brushing in the bushes but it was probably just her imagination. She found the cent of a Squirrel this time and wished with al her heart that Starclan was on her side in catching this one.
There it was sitting chewing on a small nut this time no mistakes. She silently crouched forwards careful not to step on twigs as she prepared herself and jumped catching the squirrel between her claws and killing it fast, like the warrior code wanted.

She just buried the squirrel and was ready to go for her last prey, a bird when she heard singing.

Marshstorm smiled proudly behind the shadows of a nearby tree as Owlpaw caught the squirrel efficiently with a swift stalk that made his pelt burn with pride. She was well past due to be a warrior by now, something he would be having a word with Leopardstar about. He moved briefly to step forward, but stopped short. The young she-cat seemed determined to catch all three of the prey he listed instead of settling for two.

Who was he to stop her? He settled back lower into the bushes, then after a moment, flicked his tail and moved towards the clearing where she the hunt had begun. He fully believed in his apprentice that she would catch it. If she didn't? Well, Starclan didn't always bless a hunt, but he dismissed that thought as he took up a place to sit in the clearing while he watied for the apprentice to gather her catches and bring them to the clearing.

Owlpaw followed the song of the bird stupid, if he stayed quiet he might just hear me coming. She now saw where the bird was located, and it made her freeze the bird was in a tree, on a higher branch now.
She backed away a bit unsure if she could do this then stopped, whas this where you father given his life for? To let a scared little mouse survive?
No
She looked up at that bird and moved towards the tree.
She slashed her claw into the tree, she was going to do this for her father.
Her next claw in the tree, she was going to do this for her mother who never saw her becoming an apprentice.

she jumped into the tree, like Eaglefang had learned her moons ago as for she was doing this for him to.

She made her way to a higher branch then the bird keeping herself steady she made sure that even if she missed she would not fall and pain herself to hard.  She looked at the bird as she jumped aiming for the heart.

I am doing this for my clan

She landed perfectly on the bird as she quickly killed it and managed to not fall in the process. She quickly jumped down feeling calmer than she had been for a long time, the dark thoughts that had plagued her had vanished and she felt light of the relieve and acceptance that filled her heart as she made it back to the clearing waiting for Marshstorm to show himself again.

Marshstorm smiled in approval as Owlpaw padded back from her assessment. His chest puffed and eyes glittered with pride.
"Well done, Owlpaw." He congratulated her calmly before he padded forward to where she was standing. "It is easy to see that you could be a warrior any night, once you've taken your moonstone." He smiled proudly and gestured towards camp.

"Let's bring your catches to camp. You've earned some bragging rights." He chuckled softly in encouragement.
