Scrambling to heave himself up the final tail-length of the Great Rock, Lichenpaw's breath escaped his chest in heaving, ungainly puffs. After witnessing his first Gathering, he had been filled with the usual fanatical excitement that most youth experienced in the aftermath of the monthly meeting. Feeling the smooth, cool stone splinter beneath his claws as he finally found purchase atop the ancient stone, the young tabby let out a short sigh of victory. "C'mon! You gotta get up here, Darkpaw." Lichenpaw called, hanging off the stone slightly so that he could peer at his denmate and accomplice.

Rookpaw trudged ahead through ShadowClan territory, her tail held high as she lead her Clanmate through thick reeds and swampy terrain. "You're slower than a snail," she called over her shoulder. "Pick up the pace, Fallowpaw." She didn't bother looking over her shoulder as she trekked toward Fourtrees. She'd had her first Gathering the other day, and she could still taste the faint scents of Clan cats intermingled in the vicinity. She stopped, sniffing lightly at the air. She had a bad feeling in her gut; perhaps someone was already here.

Fallowpaw huffed as Rookpaw made her snide remark. "I'm only slow, because I'm following you," she retorted haughtily. She continued to trot after her Clanmate until her fellow apprentice stopped short, Fallowpaw nearly bumping into her. "Wha-" she started to say, loudly, but the word caught in her throat as she picked up the scent that Rookpaw had detected. Her ears pricked, listening closely for any sound of other cats.

“Ngh! I’m coming! I’m coming!” Darkpaw’s claws scratched the rock as he struggled to reach Lichenpaw. He had just found his first true rival…climbing. And because Lichenpaw was having it clearly easier than him he started to panic internally as the possibility of losing the race to leadership against him stared to taunt him.

With a loud huff he finally managed to climb up and reach Lichenpaw “There! Easy!” He tried to act like he was fine, but his quickly beating heart and quick breathing he struggled to keep at least somewhat hidden from his comrade tell otherwise. His proud was too big to concede defeat by saying Lichenpaw, or anyone for that matter, was better than him at anything.

He made a mental note to practice climbing daily as soon as he returned to RiverClan to get better at it, overcome this great obstacle. He wasn’t a SkyClan cat, he didn’t needed to know how to climb like an expert…but he wanted to, he just had to be the best at everything, no matter what.

Claws pulsating with faint pinpricks of pain from the strangely ferocious task of climbing, Lichenpaw curiously cast his gaze down to the scrabbling form of Darkpaw. Whether his prideful denmate was willing to admit it, he clearly seemed to struggle just as much in the wake of such a challenge. But the Leaders had somehow made it out to be easy? Even that she-fox from WindClan hadn't so much as ruffled her fur when climbing atop the Great Rock. Patiently waiting for his dark-furred counterpart to join him atop the ancient stone, his senses were unusually oblivious to the encroaching pair of she-cats. Tail absently curling around his colorless paws, the young tom remained abnormally quiet as he took in the grandeur of Fourtrees.

"You know.." Lichenpaw eventually began, stealing a glance at Darkpaw from his peripheral vision, "The view is surprisingly overrated."

"Get down," hissed Rookpaw commandingly, instantly dropping into a crouch. "There are cats already here." She couldn't see them, but their RiverClan stench clung to the air like claws. The black she-cat stuck to the trees, flicking her tail for Fallowpaw to follow. She crept along the edge of the Fourtrees clearing. Her yellow eyes cut through the shadows of the foliage around her, scanning around for any sign of movement. Then, she stopped. "Look!"

On the Great Rock sat two smaller cats. From afar, it was hard to tell if they were warriors, but they seemed so small in contrast to the immense size of the Great Rock. She wanted so badly to sneak up on them, but their scrabbling would be far too loud. Should they attack? Should they announce their presence and coax them down? She glanced back at Fallowpaw for her opinion. "Let's teach those fish-brains a lesson," Rookpaw urged.

Fallowpaw huffed at Rookpaw. Her stupid denmate was constantly ordering her about, telling her what to do as if she was a kit. Rookpaw decided to point out the obvious, and indicate the two cats on top of the Great Rock, who were impossible to miss. "Yeah, 'cause I didn't notice them at all," she retorted, rolling her eyes. "RiverClanners," she muttered. "How can they even stand their own foul stench?" In any case, it wasn't the full moon, which meant there was no truce, which meant this was a perfect opportunity to show those RiverClan cats what they were made of.

It seemed as if Rookpaw had had the same idea as Fallowpaw. "Well, we obviously can't sneak up on them. If we want to teach them a lesson, let's get out there, and then they'll come down off the rock." This time, Fallowpaw took the lead, trotting out from the cover of the forest into the open. She led Rookpaw not too far from the Great Rock, where she was sure the RiverClanners could see them. "Hey fish-brains!" she called. "Enjoying the pretty view?" she taunted.
