One Wrong Step (Closed Skirmish)

It was a nice day as far as leaf-bare is concerned; the sun was managing to peek out between fluffy grayish-white clouds, and a soft breeze swept among the leaves, producing an ambient atmosphere that any cat would stop to appreciate.  Well, any cat except Fernpaw.  The sound of thudding pawsteps against the moist ground broke the immersion, as the young brown and white tabby apprentice shot out of the underbrush, hot on the tail of a plump rabbit.  It was not often that SkyClan received visits from the cotton-tailed creatures, but rabbits were good eating, and Fernpaw knew that her adoptive father Rippedsky still had a taste for the meat from his days living in WindClan.  Her eyes locked on her target, she slender she-cat's legs pumped furiously as she tried to overtake the swift animal; she was not built for such fast running.  Putting on an extra burst of speed, she began to catch up with the sprinting creature, and finally was able to reach out a front paw and trip it.  As soon as it stumbled and fell, Fernpaw jumped forward and sunk her teeth into it's throat, instantly killing it.  With a mrrow of satisfaction, she was about to pick it up and head back to camp when she suddenly realized...she was several fox-lengths across the ThunderClan border, and she could hear a set of pawsteps heading straight for her.

"Please just go back to your side. I really don't want to have to hurt you too badly." Swoopnose's plea was oddly desperate for someone who had just witnessed an enemy cat crossing the border. Fighting anyone other than for practice was something he hated, if only for the strange thrill he got from it. He had seen what happened to cats who loved the adrenaline too much, and he really didn't want to be there. So here he was, begging an enemy to simply follow the code. Hopefully she would just listen. Already, his claws itched to attack. It took effort to not slash her across the face, and he sheathed and unsheathed his claws into the dirt. Maybe she wouldn't notice. He had actually just been hunting, and his patrol wasn't too far away. But getting his clanmates would make this fight certain to happen.

Fernpaw whipped around at the sound of a strangely hesitant voice and met the bright green gaze of a silver tabby tom, scenting strongly of ThunderClan.  Though she had heard his approach, the fur along her neck was bristling slightly from surprise, and her dark murky eyes were wide, but after a moment she quickly calmed down...sort of.  Instead, a mocking sneer crept onto her patched face as she placed one forepaw on top of the dead rabbit, every muscle in her body screaming a challenge.  Tossing her head arrogantly, she hissed; "Pfft, ThunderClan cats really are as weak as they say...don't you want to try and take this rabbit back to your poor 'ittle starving clan?  It's nice and plump, I'm sure it could feed a few kits...but I suppose now it will be a few SkyClan kits instead."  With a mocking 'tsk' of fake sympathy, Fernpaw turned her back on the ThunderClan warrior with a flick of her tail, and bent down to grab the rabbit in her jaws.  "Thanks for the prey, scardy-cat."

"Why?" That was all Swoopnose could say before his peaceful mindset was destroyed. Knowing it was a horrible idea, he pushed up onto his back legs. Claws unsheathed, he did the exact thing that he had restrained himself from doing for at least a few moments. It wasn't the insults themselves that pushed him to do this, no, it was the fact that she had the nerve to actually try. She was the trespasser and codebreaker here. And when he spared her from the medicine den for a while, she decided to mock him. That's what needed punishing. Plus, he loved to fight, no matter how much he didn't want to. Two sets of unsheathed claws scoured across the SkyClanner, causing drops of red to contrast her white fur. There was no stopping him now.

Swoopnose used Rear-up to Slash on Fernpaw, dealing 11 damage and costing 15 stamina.

Fernpaw let out a muffled screech as she felt sharp claws score down her back, quickly dropping the rabbit that was blocking her jaws so that she could turn around and face this cat. I guess he's not a coward after all... With a fierce hiss, Fernpaw crouched down and sprung at Swoopnose...but not at his face. Instead she ducked around the side and grasped his tail between her teeth, and tugged as hard as she could. Rippedsky had just taut her that move the other day, and she couldn't help the proud smile that enveloped her face at the thought.

Fernpaw used Tail Yank, using 10 stamina and dealing 2 damage.

The moment she fought back Swoopnose was past the point of no return. His fearful and logical thoughts abandoned him completely. Hissing and growling savagely, he struggled to his feet. He would win this.

Fernpaw watched through narrowed eyes as the ThunderClan warrior struggled to his paws, his savage battle growls lighting a strong fire in her belly, increased adrenaline pumping through her veins.  Unlike some other cats, she craved the thrill of battle, and a cocky grin began to form on her face.  For now, she had the upper hand, and it felt great to use all of the skills she had been honing in training for moons.  Before the older tom could react, she dashed forward and raked her claws deep into his belly, red droplets of blood soaking his white underfur.

Swoopnose let out nothing more than a solitary yelp of pain as the SkyClanner's dug into his stomach, ripping through sensitive flesh. Now his already anger filled body didn't get any weaker, just stronger from the sudden replenishment of rage. Whatever sane thoughts he might have had were gone, replaced by a primitive love for blood on his claws and fangs. Adrenaline filled him, and he lunged upward, suddenly taking hold of her scruff none too gently. Pulling backwards, he began to rake his claws deep into her flesh over and over. This far into the fight, no logic stopped him from loving this.

Swoopnose used Teeth Grip on Fernpaw, dealing 8 damage and costing 20 stamina. Fernpaw can only use front paw moves for 1 turn.

Fernpaw let out a sharp yelp of pain as the ThunderClan tom dug his claws into her pelt, and she could feel the sticky warmth of blood begin to soak her skin.  As panic began to set in, the young she-cat clawed desperately at any open spot of flesh she could find, determined to free herself.

Grinning with a sadistic pleasure, Swoopnose unsheathed his claws, sending them spiraling into the SkyClanner's flesh. Too deep into the fight to have any of his usual rational thoughts, he didn't show a bit of mercy, using way more force than was needed to finish the fight. Even in his adrenaline fueled craze, he could tell that the fight was over, and that he had clearly won. Stepping back, he gave himself a few moments to catch his breath. Just that was enough for his usual self to realize what was going on. Oh no, hopefully he hadn't seriously injured her. A big war between SkyClan and ThunderClan was the last thing they needed. But something told him talking wasn't going to get him out of this. Guilt biting into him, he picked up the hare and carried it back towards his patrol.

Fernpaw cried out as the ThunderClanner dealt a final blow, her eyes smarting with tears at the painful sensation of tearing fur and flesh.  Knocked back onto the ground on her side of the border, she watched at the piece-of-foxdung tom grabbed her prey, and walked off back into his territory like nothing had ever happened.  Cursing furiously as she managed to hobble to her paws, the apprentice turned around and limped off into the trees, deeply embarrassed and dreading what was to come.  Oh geez, Mintpaw's not gonna let me hear the end of this one...
