| Honeykit was restless.
She wouldn’t say she was bored – only whiny kits got bored. No, Honeykit was merely “restless” – the word the elders used when they’d been sleeping for days and needed to find an activity. (Which was usually kit sitting – something that made Honeykit want to claw her ears off.) She certainly wasn’t sick of sitting in the nursery all day, or of walking around camp having everyone fuss and baby her like some newborn. No – she was just “restless.”
She just needed some action.
The golden tabby kitten strode from the nursery. It was morning, just after the warriors left for their patrols, and so the camp seemed quite barren; the clearing beyond the bush seemingly empty but for leaves, scattering in the wind. Honeykit wasn’t deterred, however.
One of the leaves whisked past her and Honeykit almost chased it – on instinct – but she wasn’t a kit anymore! No – only stupid kits like the rest of them chased leaves. Honeykit was going to find – um – productive things to do. Grown-up, warrior-things.
The little kit perked her ears, scanning the clearing for those grown-up warrior things…
…and – yes! There was someone there! |

| Sunpaw was very much bored, and contemplating what she could do to alleviate that boredom. Perhaps she could sneak out of camp? But that wouldn't be any fun by herself, she supposed, and what if she ran into an eagle by herself? No, she supposed, she would have to wait for a friend to join her in that particular endeavor. Instead, she found herself pouncing on a leaf blown about by the breeze, imagining it was a big, fat squirrel she could bring to the prey pile. Sure, it was kitlike, but she was barely an apprentice, anyway. | Honeykit spotted the she-cat off to the side, her light pelt standing out against the brown of the clearing. She was an apprentice, Honeykit remembered -- Sunpaw, she thought? Or was it Sandpaw... Well, whatever. The point was there was someone else here -- someone not a kit! Maybe she could help Honeykit master her battle moves. Honeykit had been practicing all yesterday.
So the golden kit rushed up to the apprentice, eager -- until she saw her pouncing on a leaf, in a way disturbingly reminiscent of her stupid former self.
"What are you doing?" she snapped. "Aren't you an apprentice?"

| Sunpaw froze for a moment, afraid her mentor had perhaps seen her goofing around and had come to reprimand her, before realizing it was just an incredibly confident kit. Intrigued, she paused in her game to instead focus on the confident ball of fur. "Playing. You're a kit, don't you ever play?" she purred in amusement. | Honeykit narrowed her eyes. Who was this she-cat? The light colored apprentice looked down at her, and it took Honeykit a moment before she recognized the amusement in the older cat's voice. Was she mocking her?
How dare she!
Honeykit eyed the apprentice -- seeing her relatively small frame; how her paws were over that stupid leaf -- and the kit decided. It was obvious that this she-cat was a joke.
"I don't play, I'll have you know. Because I'm gonna be a Skyclan warrior," she said boldly. Even if you're not. She puffed herself up. If she tried, she could just reach the she-cat's shoulder.
She had been going to ask the apprentice to help her hone her amazing battle skills. But it was obvious this was not a real apprentice -- and she was going to prove it!
"That's it!" she said before the apprentice could reply -- blood rushing at the excitement of it all. "I challenge you to a battle!"

Honestly, a battle sounded like exactly what Sunpaw needed at the moment. | 'Sounds like fun?' Honeykit wasn't doing this because it was fun -- of course not! -- she was doing this because she was going to be a warrior, and warriors... fought battles. Right.
Honeykit ignored the irritating cheerfulness in Sunpaw-Sandpaw as she looked around. The camp was... pretty empty. It would be for a little while, probably. There was plenty enough room for a battle, wasn't there?
There were probably some warriors in their den somewhere, but that was good too -- maybe they'd see her trounce this she-cat and she'd get to be an apprentice right now instead of waiting! The excitement at the thought was almost too much for her fluffy little body.
Limbs surging with excitement, Honeykit remembered how she had attacked that rock the day before -- leaning back, bunching her haunches -- and she sprung!

| Sunpaw simply stayed where she was, completely still, wondering what the kit's plan of action was. That was a question almost immediately answered - direct pouncing. | Honeykit wasn't sure what she was aiming for, exactly -- she just pounced -- which is probably why her head crashed against the apprentice's jaw. Hard.
It felt like she slammed against a rock -- temple spiking with pain -- and the little tabby fell back with a gasp. Ow! Her limbs fell in a tangle, ears flat, and Honeykit grit her teeth -- just like she did when she hit her head against the clan rock.

| "I don't need anything!" Honeykit bit out; the pounding was fading but it still hurt. Not that she'd let it show -- warriors were tough! She was tough, too! Fighting back the brief well of tears, she shook her head. "I was just -- just testing you, that's all!"
The light-colored apprentice was looking down at her in concern, like she didn't even feel it at all -- and it made humiliation burn hot beneath Honeykit's coat. But it only made anger rush through Honeykit -- she wasn't going down that easily!
Letting the heat burning in her chest carry her, Honeykit charged this time -- straight for her legs! |

| What a nice day! A small scrap of silver-tabby fluff wandered distractedly through camp, her steps slow yet deliberate and her crystalline gaze unfocused.
Yup.
Drizzlepaw was daydreaming again.
Her steps were muffled by her long fur, letting her meander about the bounds of the camp unnoticed. The apprentice idly wondered when she and Quietpaw would play again. That thought lead into another of playing with her mama and papa. With a dreamy smile, the apprentice continued to wander about, only to find her nose impacting with soft fur.
She blinked.
The fur tickled a little.
Her eyes refocused finally to lock in on gold. Gold fur that is. She sniffed. The scent vaguely triggered something in her memory and the she-cat lingered there with her nose still buried in the other cat's fur as she attempted to remember what the scent was.
Ahhh yes that was right. This was that one cat in the nursery. Ssssssunpaw? Ssssssunnypaw? Ssssssandypaw? Ssssss... ah she couldn't remember. The easygoing little she-cat took a couple steps back and smiled dreamily at the other apprentice "Gooood morning Ssssss..." She hummed, before her attention was drawn to the little kit. She looked so startlingly similar to her fellow apprentice that Drizzlepaw couldn't help but do a double take. Gaze shifting between the two golden tabbies, her jaw dropped a little. Was she seeing double?

| Honeykit focused on nothing but her charge, pushing forward with all the strength in her little body. It was only a few moments before she made impact -- head slamming against the fur of the apprentice's foreleg. The ache exploded behind her temples again but it was worth it -- she felt the cat giving in beneath her! ______________________________________

| Drizzlepaw sat down and watched as Sunpaw's tiny mirror image rammed into her. Well they certainly seemed occupied. Her tail twitched in amusement until she tilted her head and asked in all seriousness, "What game are you two playing? It tastes like fun!"
To anyone who knew Drizzlepaw well, this particular phrase would come as no surprise to them.
