Mother Lynx is pregnant and searching for a den. But the winter night is cold, and fearsome predators have caught her scent.

The snow fell quickly that night. Mother Lynx shuddered as she trudged through the darkness, her golden fur soon hidden behind a blanket of snow. Her tufted ears twitched. She was not alone.
They had been following her for some time now.
They had picked up her trail while she was crossing the tundra, and had followed her through the forest. Mother Lynx was clever and tried to evade them by crossing unfrozen streams and scratching certain trees, but the wolves were clever too. Clever and starving.
Mother Lynx's fur rose as a branch cracked out of sight, but she hid any other sign that she was worried. The wolves wouldn't attack, not now. The chances of losing her were too great.
Weren't they?

Suddenly, a loud howl rippled through the otherwise still air. Mother Lynx hissed and broke into a run, leaping over tree branches and snow-covered ferns, dodging icy trees and falling branches.
The wolves were faster though, fueled by desperation and excitement, they closed in behind her and on her left and right. And they were driving her into a ravine. The walls grew higher and the path grew narrower as Mother Lynx ran on, the wolves snarling, only a few Deerlengths behind her. There was a sheer cliff-face dead ahead. Mother Lynx looked desperately around for another way, but she was trapped.

I finished the game for the first time the other day, it's what inspired me to try this~

Mustering her strength, Mother Lynx bunched her legs underneath her and jumped, her powerful back legs propelling her into the air, and safely at the top of the wall. Looking back only once at the wolves who barked angrily beneath her, the golden lynx walked on, the snowflakes quickly covering her trail. She had won, for now.
She winced as the kits squirmed and walked faster, following an invisible trail through the dark trees. With a grunt, she shouldered her way through a particularly thick patch of undergrowth and emerged into an open field.
She wandered for a short while, gazing at the stars and pausing to appreciate the snowfall. The area would soon be bountiful in rabbits, moles and perhaps deer or elk, come spring. The grass was covered in snow but still seemed to whisper invitingly. The land seemed to come up to a point, rising slowly in the form of gently sloping hills. At the peak, there was a large spruce tree with wide roots that rose above the ground.
On one side of the tree, and the furthest point downhill, there was a swampland. There would be plenty of eggs and frogs nearby, and a river that opened into a small lake, before continuing into the forest, murmured invitingly. Perhaps, beyond that, there would be a tundra or valley, or other such things that often occur near rivers.
On the other three sides of the tree, there was a short bit of grass. But beyond that, another forest, a much more open and friendly-looking one, promised both rabbits and pheasants. And what would lie deeper within the forest? Perhaps another area such as this, and maybe yet another valley, as that's where it looked like the river headed next.
And maybe, beyond the river, there was the sea.
Mother Lynx rested for a short while, indecisively. However, she soon reached her decision and heaved herself to her feet, lumbering towards...


A. The Swampland, with the promise of easy meals in the spring and summer, but no shelter.

B. The Tundra, where the deer and elk roam, but the chances of wolves and eagles are high.

C. The Forest, where the pheasants and rabbits thrive, but the chances of a cub getting lost are high, and the chances of them finding their way home are slim.

D. The Deep Forest, where the chances of prey are high, but the risks are, too.

E. The Tree, with a promise of warmth and shelter, but the possibility of another creature to ward off.

I'm just gonna go out on a limb and say C

Mother Lynx rested for a short while, indecisively. However, she soon reached her decision and heaved herself to her feet, lumbering towards... the Tree, with a promise of warmth and shelter. She walked slowly, each pawstep faltering ever so slightly. Was this really the best place to raise a young litter of cubs? Surely others would see the den and want it for themselves as well...
Mother Lynx grunted and shook her head, trying to clear her mind. She turned her vivid hazel eyes towards the Tree once more and began to walk faster, with purpose.
Something squirmed impatiently inside her and she began to trot, throwing caution to the winds. Nearly there...
Mother Lynx skidded to a stop, huffing, at the base of the tree. She chuffed happily to herself. There were no other animals nearby. She had made the correct choice.
Mother Lynx found a minuscule gap in the roots, and beyond that, a large hollow at the base of the tree. She dug her way through, her large paws adept at scooping and digging, and her claws perfect for breaking through the hard layer of ice that lay just above the dirt. Finally, panting, Mother Lynx had dug a sizable trench, so she and her cubs could enter and exit their new home with ease.
Tired and sore, Mother Lynx relaxed on her side in the den, her claws flexing every so often as a rippling pain shot through her. She gripped the root in her mouth, her sharp teeth carving deeper and deeper into the soft bark...

It was dawn. The pale sun clawed over the horizon, dying the sky a pleasant mix of vivid golden and soft, gentle pink. A few clouds were all that was of last night's blizzard, which had blown itself out only a short while ago. The snow remained unbroken; no animals had dared to venture from their shelters, despite the relatively clear weather. All animals of the tundra know that the weather could change from mild to dangerous in the blink of an eye.
Mother Lynx was still in her den, purring softly and running her nose through the soft, fluffy fur each cub as if counting them.
One, a boisterous young thing, had red fur and already, a knack for trouble. She had already managed to annoy all three of her siblings, and Mother Lynx could tell that she alone would be quite a handful.
The youngest was a small gray tom, no bigger than one of Mother Lynx's paws. At first, she had been worried that he wouldn't make it through the night. However, the tiny creature had pushed his way past his siblings, surprisingly determined.
The eldest was a larger tom, with snowy white fur and a mothering personality. However, Mother Lynx wasn't sure how something so docile could survive longer than a few months...
The last, and second-youngest, had brown fur only a few shades darker than Mother Lynx's. She was friendly, yes, but it was difficult to understand her personality. Perhaps, with time, Mother Lynx would be able to get a better read on her.
