It's been a chilly day.

Jasminepaw hasn't really been doing well with her training, she panicked and ran away from the riverbank at the sight of it. The she-cat ducked her head down, her claws digging into the ground. How was she going to be a Riverclan warrior if she was afraid of the river? Ridiculous! Jasminepaw let out a sigh her head had hurt. She was positive that her siblings had no problem's with facing the water so why her? Why only her? She felt like she had eyes on her so she looked over giving them a mean glare. "What?" She spat out towards the cat.

Toadkit stomped away from camp, tail lashing. How dare they tell him he looked too small to be an apprentice! He was already 6 moons old. He lashed at a stick with his forepaw, sending it flying off in the opposite direction. He caught a flash of fur past the trees, and noticed a familiar apprentice pacing along the river. He didn't really recall what her name was. What is that furbrain doing? he wondered. Why was she dancing away from the water like that? The black and white tom caught himself staring, and looked away, pulling his ears back. Whatever. Apprentices are all the same. Best not get caught up in a conversation.

Just as Toadkit had placed a paw in front of him, a twig snapped beneath his paw. His fur stood on end as eyes stared back at him with aggression. He stepped out from the bushes, shaking leaves from his pelt. He felt hot with nervousness. "I wasn't spying," he lied, pawing at a patch of grass beneath his paw. He glanced from the river and back to Jasminepaw. She obviously wasn't hunting or patrolling. "What are you doing?"

When she saw a kit step out she calmed down a bit not wanting to yell at a kit. Although she couldn't help not being rude, since it was in her nature. "None of your business" She hissed towards him her ear twitched with annoyance. "Im sure you weren't, like you have anything better to do." Jasminepaw said sarcastically rolling her eyes, kits were so annoying, they were always so noisy.

Toadkit felt his fur fluffing up. His whisker twitched. "It doesn't look like you're doing anything important yourself," he retorted, sweeping his tail against the ground. He glared at her with his single green eye. "And if you are, how much prey have you gotten today? I just saw you by the river. You must've caught something." He approached Jasminepaw, sizing her up and narrowing his eye at her. She was noticeably bigger than him. He hoped she didn't detect the faint fear-scent that lingered under his fur.

Jasminepaw huffed, what did this kit know of her? Was he the one out here training like she was? She already knew the answer to that - which was no, as she got a closer glance at the kit she noticed that he had only one eye. "Listen..." she said with a soft tone. " Dont you dare underestimate what apprentice's do for this clan." Jasminepaw scolded him her tone quickly changing. All apprentices had a duty it being either catching prey, training, fighting or taking care of elders. "At least we can do something for our clan, kit's cant provide anything... nothing at all." The apprentice trailed off glancing back into the river averting her gaze from him.

Toadkit felt his claws slide out of their sheaths in anger. He could hear the change in her voice. He was being told off as if she were a queen speaking to her kit. "I'm as much of an apprentice as you are!" he spat, glancing from her to the river. "Just watch me!" Toadkit shouldered his way past Jasminepaw and headed for the river. He glared at her from behind his shoulder as he approached the riverbed.

She was always told that she was harsh with her words. Jasminepaw really didn't mean to offend Toadkit but the apprentice had no manner's and didn't know how to say sorry. Her eyes had widened as she watched him drew closer to the river. "What are you doing you mouse-brain! You'll drown!" She wanted to follow him but as the water splashed she felt herself freeze in her paws. Jasminepaw let out a low growl watching the kit, she really doubted that he would jump in.

Toadkit dipped a paw in the river, flexing his claws at the feeling. I'll catch a fish. I'll show her. He tilted his head sideways, eyeing at the water and concentrating. Why wasn't Jasminepaw going to stop him? Was she just curious whether he could catch something? He waited for a silvery shape to swim by, or any sign of a shadow.

A small minnow piqued his attention. it wasn't much, but it was better than Jasminepaw had done. He lurched forward, wildly flailing his paws into the water. He felt something smack against his paw. Had he gotten it? By the time he realized his situation, he was already face-first into the water. Trying to call for help, Toadkit got a mouthful of water. It flooded his sight and his nostrils. Where was he? Save me! he screamed in his mind.

She had felt her heart beat slowly become louder and louder.. She wanted to stop him she really did but she didn't have the guts. Her eyes widened as he went closer and closer to the water she couldn't find her words she felt as if she couldn't speak. Her whiskers twitched and she silently watched him she had to admit, Toadkit did have a lot of paitence.

He fell in.. He fell in?!?!

One second later the mouse-brained fool fell face in! "Toadkit!" She yelled racing towards the river-bank before she froze again. She couldn't move she couldn't take another step forward, the water.. she just couldn't She glanced around hoping that another warrior would approach but she saw no one. "Toadkit!" She mewed again her eyes widening with fear.

The kitten felt his world spinning. Would he ever get back to RiverClan? His small lungs began to burn for air. Was this it? Would his last moments be lost in the river forever? Darkness was all that was surrounding the kitten's vision. His eye tightly shut, he waited for the opportunity to finally breathe again.

His forepaw smashed into a rock, sending water shooting down his throat. He found more strength to fight, adrenaline coursing through his veins. His hurt paw scrabbled at the rock, and he found himself on the surface, sputtering weakly. Toadkit's vision was cloudy as he used the last of his strength to push himself off the rock and onto RiverClan territory. He collapsed on the spot. Water drained from his nose and mouth.

His eye was fixed on Jasminepaw. "Traitor," he rasped. "You traitor. Why didn't you save me?" His legs shook from the shock and the cold air that ruffled his fur. Dry land never felt more comforting. At the same time, he never felt more scared in his life.

She felt more anxious as time passed.. was she able to do anything? If she dived in, she would drown herself! She felt like such a coward she had to do something she'll never be a warrior if she doesn't get past this obstacle. With a hiss she was about to leap in but thats when she spotted Toadkit again.

"Y-you!.. Mousebrain!" Jasminepaw hissed as she launched forwards towards him making sure he was alright. The she-cat didn't know what to say to his words. She stared down at her paw's ashamed, he was right she was a traitor! What were her clan-mates going to say about her? She couldn't save a kit from drowning? She doubted that Fishstar would ever trust her again!

Her eyes shut close and she yelped. "Im sorry okay!" She said "I... I.. I don't" She mumbled her gaze falling back to her paw's "I cant swim!"

Toadkit took a few moments to regain his stature. His sides heaved as he wheezed for air. He glared up at her. "S... see? You're no... apprentice." He finally sat up on his paws. His ear flicked as she blurted out her inability to swim. He shuddered. He felt very unsafe near her. What kind of RiverClan cat was afraid of the water? He said nothing, only stared at his paws.

"I could've died." It was Toadkit's fault. He shouldn't have went near the river. He wouldn't let Jasminepaw know that. "I... I don't know what to say." Should he tell someone? Maybe Jasminepaw was lying...

Jasminepaw knew what he was thinking about her. Toadkit probably doubted her inability to be an apprentice but she ignored that and wanted to make sure he was okay. "Whatever...
" She said with a annoyed huff and sat down near the small kit relief washing over the apprentice. Giving Toadkit a glance as he stayed silent.

"Promise me something.." Jasminepaw muttered glancing towards the clouds. "Promise you won't tell anyone that... I can't swim.... ?" Jasminepaw shifted uncomfortably in the silence wondering what was going on in the kit's mind, she could only hope that Toadkit would agree not to tell a single cat.

Toadkit stayed quiet. What if he did tell? After all, it might save another kit's life if the same situation happened again. Plus, Jasminepaw was just rude overall. If she were him, she would tell on him in a heartbeat. "I don't know," he admitted. He stared into her eyes. "Fine. I promise." Toadkit nodded weakly. She'd better treat him with more respect from now on. He would be an apprentice like her soon.

He eyed her. "What are you going to do about your not being able to swim? You can't catch voles all day," he commented.

Jasminepaw had no idea how she was going to face her fears of the water, but she was confident that her parents and her mentor will be able to help her. She wouldn't be able to call herself a riverclan cat if she couldn't even place a paw into the river without being a chicken. "Ill learn! okay!" She said with a annoyed expression and a heavy huff. "Ill learn!!"
