Sparkpaw's Assessment

Rainstorm padded into reed-filled territory, his tail swishing back and forth with the wind. It was a particularly nice day, especially for a soon-to-be-warrior's assessment. While he didn't know Sparkpaw very well, despite their apparent blood relation, her mentor had come to him requesting his help. While Lilacfeather had been caught up in whatever kept her from this duty, Rainstorm led the young she-cat towards the best hunting grounds in the territory.

With the river mostly thawed, she could showcase her fishing skills without problem, unlike himself during that cold Leafbare. "You'll need to catch three pieces of prey before sundown. One of your catches must be a fish caught in the river. During your hunt I will be watching, but I will not interrupt. This is solely your task," the warrior called behind him before coming to a stop and nodding to the she-cat. "If you understand, you may start whenever you like."

"Alright!" She meowed loudly before remembering that she was supposed to be hunting. The apprentice winced sheepishly before slinking off into the reeds, hoping that the fish hadn't heard her. Sparkpaw was tiny, over 12 moons old yet she looked like a recently named apprenticed, however she used that to her advantage. She was quick, and bold. Pressing her belly against the rocks, she carefully avoided casting a shadow before attempting to bat a fish out of the water.

It was a success, the trout fell out of the water stunned and the calico ended it's life with a swift bite. The sweet juices of the prey flooded her senses, but she ignored that, burying the fish before she narrowed her eyes to look across the River. Sunningrocks was always teeming with prey, and she wanted to prove that she was more than just a fish hunting cat.

Quickly, she skipped over the stepping stones, enjoying the refreshing coolness of the water against her paws as she sniffed the air for something worthy to catch. There was a lizard sunning on the rocks. She wasn't that good at hunting them, but she wanted to try.

'I can do this,' she thought to herself as she approached, then she pounced!

Unsurprisingly, she failed. She managed to land on the lizard, but her paws slipped off the rock before she could place a bite to it's head. "Oft." She meowed when her jaw hit the rock instead of lizard flesh. But a shuffling noise from the bush had her freeze in place, it was a shrew shooting out of the bushes to make a break for the water. It must of spotted her.

It was a race.

Sparkpaw quickly got onto her feet and bolted to cut it off.

It turned out to be a miss, and all it did was tire her out. Sparkpaw was sorely tempted to bat a rock into the river with frustration, but she accepted her defeat at Sunningrocks. The apprentice chose to take her hunting up to the beech copse, maybe she'd have better luck there.

There was a flock of birds pecking at the seeds on the ground.

Her yellow eyes narrowed with determination, she couldn't lose this again. Taking in a deep breath, she belly crawled over to the birds, ready to bring one down before she attacked.

In her jaws was a dove. But she didn't stop there, Sparkpaw twisted to try catch another.

Her greed lead to disappointment, but she couldn't be mad. She'd managed to catch one fish and one bird. Only one more piece of prey and she'd be free. Burying the dove, she went over to the Broken Pools next, hoping to catch a frog.

When she saw a familiar green body, she went for it.

The calico sighed with relief, collapsing where she stood. Now to meet Rainstorm.
