Sandpaw's Assessment [for Cloverpool]

Blacktwig paced in camp. He had done this before, no big deal. But this time was different. Grief-stricken by each event, he felt no compelling force to yowl at him to do this assessment. It was important, though, and it would be done. His muscles sore, he poked his head into the apprentices' den. Aubade, Blacktwig posited, laid upon the terrain. "Sandpaw," he grumbled wearily, "Sandpaw, wake up. It's time for your assessment." Not waiting, Blacktwig padded out and sat within a wooded thicket. He searched for the sandy-russet pelt in the pasture.

Sandpaw opened his brown eyes and grumbled. He stretched and groomed his slightly fluffy red pelt and padded after his mentor with a scowl. He lashed his tail as they came to a stop in the woods.

"Catch three pieces of fresh-kill by sunhigh," growled Blacktwig instructively. The tom's ears could pick up the faintest snuffle of a kit, therefore he expected much of Sandpaw. He ushered the red apprentice away with a deprecating look, striding back to his spot in the middle of a plat of grass. After so many members of his family had passed away, it took little more than apprentice's failure to embitter him. "I'll be watching," he called, vanishing into the thinly veiling shrubbery. He felt the cramped space smother him, but he had done it before. His fur fluffed up and provided protection for him. Blacktwig was vigilant and watchful; he leered at the camp, avid to release himself from the suffocating branches of the underbrush. Do well, young Sandpaw, he thought. Only keen blue eyes peeked out to the tomcat he thought strongly echinate. Though that was the truth, wasn't it?

Sandpaw scented the air and his eyes narrowed as he saw a squirrel. The toms ears pricked towards the sounds of incoming prey but he ignored them fixed on his target if he had enough time he'd grab the mouse coming his way. It was a fair distance away but nothing could escape the toms sharp eyes. Out of the three siblings Sandpaw was the best at everything although Stonepaw wasn't far behind. He got into a crouch keeping his weight off his paws and calculated the best time to spring. He waited a moment before he was within range and sprung pouncing on it and biting its neck before it could utter a sound.

Blacktwig nodded with approval. One down, two to go—is it too easy? Well, no turning back now, he thought, settling down further into the tiny nest he had composed for himself in the bushes. He seemed contented enough, with his scent masked by the leaves and unable to be seen.

As soon as Sandpaw could he heard the mouse and hid in a bush. He watched the mouse scurry to the roots of a nearby tree and doubtlessly moved out of the bushes in a hunting crouch and waited until he pounced on it and killed it swiftly.

Blacktwig praised Sandpaw with a nod—the sand-red tom was just whizzing through this assessment! Perhaps he needed it long ago? Blacktwig didn't mind; now he was getting it, and the speckled warrior was sure that he'd pass. Two down, one to go! he thought, scrutinizing the sky. Sunhigh was barely there yet.

Sandpaw scented the air one last time before catching wind of a thrush. The bright red tom got into a hunting crouch seeing it not that far away and got ready to pounce. He pounced and sail towards the bird soundlessly in the air. He landed on the bird and snapped it neck killing it instantly and then grabbing the mouse and the squirrel and padded back over to where Blacktwig and he met up first.

Blacktwig nodded. "Good, Sandpaw," he said expressionlessly, and a tad coldly. "I will speak to Darkstar about the likes of your ceremony." Blacktwig's whiskers twitched, and he picked his way away. "Consider this assessment passed," purred Blacktwig slightly.

Sandpaw nodded brushing off Blacktwig's cold tone and padding back to camp.
