Cloudpaw's Assessment [Closed]

Mottleheart watched with a careful gaze as Cloudpaw accidentally alerted a pheasant only to miss it when he tried to lunge at it. He shook his head at his careless action - Cloudpaw should have been on his toes and noticed the bird before that but there was no helping it. It was gone and Cloudpaw would have to seek out another prey. But so far Cloudpaw as even, two misses, two catches. Despite it all, he was doing well and Mottleheart still had faith that he could complete this assessment.

Sniffing the air once more, Cloudpaw was determined to make his next catch- forget the stupid bird! Since when did Windclan dine exclusively on pheasants anyways? Thankfully, the warm weather had seemed to draw out many rabbits and hares, because it was not long after he began his search again, he found himself on the trail of another rabbit. He could see the creatures ears as he began his silent approach through the brittle, frost-bitten heather. Dropping forward in a low, smooth crouch, he stayed hidden for as long as he possibly could before leaping after the newest rabbit. However his rear paw caught on a protruding rock, causing him to stumble with a not so friendly curse as the latest rabbit escaped once more.

Mottleheart's heart leap with fear when he saw Cloudpaw stumble as he chased after a rabbit, very tempted to race down to check on the tom but forced his fur to stand down as it seemed Cloudpaw was alright. Mottleheart couldn't help but remember how he had stumbled like that during his own assessment - it had been lucky that he hadn't twisted a paw. He shook his head, hoping that Cloudpaw could pull himself together and finish his assessment - Mottleheart didn't want to admit but there was faint traces of doubt with how luck seemed to not favor Cloudpaw in the slightest.

Huffing with anger, Cloudpaw quickly tested each of his paws to make sure nothing had been damaged during his less than graceful stumble. "Thistlefall and Willowwhisker would be mortified if they saw this trainwreck of an assesssment." He reflected, tail lashing as he thought of his parents. Tasting the air again, he was relieved that his loud, disgruntled noises didn't scare off everything and the scent of a hare seemed to be nearby. Basically disregarding most of his careful tactics he had used during his previous catches, he raced along another old rabbit track, spotting the hare long before it scented him. Racing forward, he gave chase after the small, brown creature before leaping, paws outstretched eagerly. Slamming down upon the Hare's spine, he killed the small creature near instantly, a glimmer of satisfaction welling up within him at quick catch.

Watching as Cloudpaw tested out his paws to make sure that he was alright, he tracked the tom until another rabbit showed its furry hide without being alerted to its hunter. Using good technique, he watched as Cloudpaw managed to quickly catch it and kill it quickly. Another down! One more, and this assessment would be over. He sighed softly in relief, pushing away his fear of Cloudpaw failing to complete the assessment. His eyes glimmered, already very excited to tell Ashstar of Cloudpaw's success. Just a single piece to go...

Feeling a glimmer of newfound hope that this assessment could be finished quickly and painlessly, Cloudpaw quickly buried the hare before turning to scan the soft, sloping hills once more, eyes and nose sharp as he narrowed his gaze to pick out any shapes amoung the grass. Continuing along his current rabbit track, he began to lope along in a steady gait, eagerly following a new rabbit scent- just one more piece. Spotting the newest rabbit, he wasted no time with a crouch and instead flew forward, eagerly pursuing the latest rabbit- this one wouldn't get away. Leaping forward, Cloudpaw eagerly pounced upon the plump rabbit, killing it swiftly. Turning around with his final catch dangling heavily in his jaws, he waited for Mottleheart to come out and likely critique him for how sloppy he had seemed to appear today.

The moment the final piece of prey was hanging limply in Cloudpaw's grasp, Mottleheart darted from the hill he was on to greet the apprentice. Slowly down to a steady trot as he drew close, he purred happily at the young apprentice. "Very well done, Cloudpaw!" he said with a flicker of his tail. "Despite a few screw ups, you have caught all four pieces of prey!" He paused, nodding his head as if agreeing with his own thought. "While there is a few areas you have improve upon, this assessment has been a success and I will inform Ashstar right away of this." He drew closer, resting his tail on Cloudpaw's shoulder. "When it comes to hunting, its important not to let failures get you down and get sloppy from that. You did well, Cloudpaw. You will be a great warrior. Now come on, lets get the rest of your kills and head back to the camp."

Cloudpaw'a chest puffed in delight at Mottleheart's words- despite the trouble he had initially, it seemed as if some part of his training truly paid off. With his mouth still full of his newly caught rabbit, he merely nodded his thanks and agreement, unwilling to speak with his mouth full as he didn't want to risk further embarrassing himself. Eagerly, he began to head back over a rise and in the direction of where all his previous prey had been buried, looking back to check if Mottleheart was heading after him.

Mottleheart was quick to follow when Cloudpaw headed off the direction he had come. While he already knew where the prey was buried from watching the whole assessment, he kept his pace slow and steady as he followed after the apprentice in order to be polite - and to give him a sense of rank. Cloudpaw was in charge of leading Mottleheart back to where the prey was, the warrior was simply going to go where Cloudpaw led him.
