Halfpaw's Assessment [for Acrylic]

Blacktwig padded out into the clearing. The tomcat had clearly aged since he had last trained his apprentice, Halfpaw, and now, his fur was sprinkled with grey furs. "Halfpaw!" he bellowed, looking around for the familiar, distinct, tortoiseshell pelt. "I'm waiting," he said, stepping forwards. He peeked into the apprentice's den. At first, the scenario would come of as a mere training session. Blacktwig's eyes batted, half-lidded with morning fatigue. "Get out here," he grumbled with a chuckle, to show that the tom wasn't so serious. His coat was groomed like an oil-black stream, painted with tawny-and-white speckles. He sat down, until the she-cat would emerge. "We're doing your assessment," he mewed, furrowing his brow. This would most definitely get Halfpaw out of the mood to be holed up in that dark, damp den. Clouds were skewered up in the sky.

He saw a few crowded pelts amongst them, but he saw a bundle of fur twitch. White, orange, and black. Like his. Blacktwig purred, noticing the movement as Halfpaw awoke.

Halfpaw had felt as if she was the oldest apprentice in the den for about a moon. However, now, she was more than excited to hear that today would be the day that would determine if she was ready to step into warriorhood. Her final assessment. The tortoiseshell apprentice stirred briefly in her soft nest, lifting her head from her paws and looking around groggily, even though she was about to leap out of her fur with excitement. The apprentice rose to her paws and padded swiftly over to her mentor, putting on a smile as cheery as she could, even though she wanted to fall back asleep.
"Hi, Blacktwig. I'm ready to begin!"

"Good," purred Blacktwig. "I'd follow me if I were you." Blacktwig walked deeper into the forest, until they reached a half-thawed clearing. A few layers of snow were scattered about, especially since they sheltered underneath the tall trees. The large tom looked down at his apprentice, who also doubled as his niece. "Alright," he meowed. He churned up a bit of the ground, mixed with snow. It was now a dark brown, combined with a white pigment from the snow. "I need you to catch three pieces of prey successfully, before sunhigh." The tomcat grinned. "I have faith in you. I'll be watching from the bushes. I guess it'll also test my camouflage skills." Blacktwig sauntered over to a hedge on the far side of the clearing, delving into it swiftly. You could barely see his violet-blue eyes from peering into the dark green leaves.

"And..." he said.


"Start!"

Halfpaw had hunted alone before, so this wasn't really a big deal in the sense of her mentor being with her. However, knowing that this was her assessment, and she was being watched, she felt as if millions of ants were crawling around in her tortoiseshell fur. The a apprentice stalked forwards, ears perked and eyes alert. She tasted the air as she slowly let her paws carry her through the undergrowth. She paused, seeing a mouse scurrying through the winter forest. It's little pink nose twitched and it's whiskers seemed as if they were shaking too. Halfpaw thought that it would be a great piece of prey for her to catch and bring back. The mouse, however, was extremely quick through the snow. The apprentice had used the hunting crouch, and was so close to catching it, but it raced away after seeing a huge colored blob in the white snow. Halfpaw watched it disappear into the shelter of a snow covered branch, much to her dismay. After remembering that she was being watched, she continued to trudge on through the snow with a confident smile on her muzzle. She could do this, right?

Blacktwig watched from the bushes, counting the miss, but dismissing it. He remembered the time when he was an apprentice, but she'd still have to catch three pieces of prey.

Halfpaw, after trotting on for a while longer, had nearly forgotten that she was being watched. All she knew as that she was trying to hunt, because this was her assessment. The tortoisehsell apprentice could hear more rustling. It almost startled her out of the "trance" that the sight of the beautiful forest had put on her. She scanned her surroundings, looking out for any signs of any prey. The familiar 'hoot'-ing of an owl echoed through the trees, before Halfpaw saw two majestic brown wings swoop down from the shelter of the tall trees.
An OWL?! Halfpaw thought, remembering stories that she had heard about owls carrying away kits. However, Halfpaw was unsure if the owl was strong enough to carry a full-grown apprentice, and certainly not a warrior. It's huge eyes were horrifying, but considering that Halfpaw's eyes had opened wider out of fear, she was starting to think that her eyes had grown that large as well.
The owl's talons seemed to be gleaming, and Halfpaw stared at them for a moment, before the bird swooped forwards, dragging it's front talons across Halfpaw's fur, tearing away a whole clump, and even a small strip of skin.

The cut was stinging like crazy, but Halfpaw was determined to take the owl down as prey, but if it was getting close, she'd have to just drive it off. Lifting on her hind paws, she raced forwards, with a shriek, crashing into the owl with full force so the owl was laying helplessly on it's back. She sank her claws into it's wings. The owl was trying to break free but Halfpaw was trying her best to keep it down.

The owl screeched, trying to flap it's wings or use it's beak to stun Halfpaw and get away, but it's attempts kept failing over and over again.
Halfpaw watched it try in vain, growling as she realized that it was starting to get stronger.

The fierce light that had been in the owl originally was beginning to fade, it was fading as fast as Halfpaw's strength was. The she-cat just continued to have her paws pressed against the owl, with her claws sinking down into it's flesh.

Blacktwig watched as Halfpaw encountered the owl. This wasn't part of her assessment! His eyes grew in horror, as it raked its long talons across Halfpaw's small, tortoiseshell body. Blacktwig darted out of the bushes. "Halfpaw!" he yowled, giving a strong blow with his front paw. He watched as the owl recomposed itself, a blur of frustrated, tawny feathers.

"That wasn't part of the assessment," he mused tiredly, staggering back. It had been a while since Blacktwig had fought another animal directly.

Halfpaw's ears flattened against her head, and she looked over at her mentor sheepishly.
"But if I'm to be a true warrior, I should be able to at least fight off an owl..." The apprentice said, in disappointment. She was glad to Blacktwig had been there, or else she would've been owl food. However, Halfpaw was still mentally throwing insults at herself. Was she even ready to be a warrior?

"It's alright," meowed Blacktwig, gazing at Halfpaw. He flicked his tail. "Not everyone can kill an owl. Not even-" Blacktwig got cut off, as the owl dashed towards him. It was tired of waiting, and absolutely livid at Blacktwig for injuring it. It let out a sickening, angry hoot, as it glided towards Blacktwig, talons bared.

The tomcat gasped, and his steps receded. "That's a strong one," he commented breathlessly, tail lashing. He took his time to recover, ears flattened against his speckled skull, as he glared up at the brownish-tawny owl. Its feathers were dotted with black flecks, and it was hooting like mad. Its orange eyes were wild.
