Ferretpaw's Assessment

Stifling a yawn, Mudfoot trotted over to the apprentice den. "Ferretpaw!" He meowed, and walked over near the entrance. When Ferretpaw was mauled by the hawk, Mudfoot had honestly thought it would be the end of training for her. Fortunately, he was wrong. His apprentice had made a great recovery and although she was still injured, they could do some basic training.

Ferretpaw wanted to pretend she didn't hear her mentor, but she knew that was no way to go. She was facing the wall at the back of the den, and even as she turned to follow her mentor her face was ducked in shame. She gulped as she stepped out of the den and locked eyes with Mudfoot, her awful scar clearly visible. "I'm here, Mudfoot," she said, quickly averting her eyes. "Oh, and I forgot to thank you... You know, for saving me and all... from the... yeah." She sighed and shuffled her paws. She forced a smile and a dreary look crossed her eyes. "What're we doing today, then?"

Looking up from the ground at his apprentice, he instantly noticed something was wrong. Usually she came bounding out the the den, ready to patrol. But now, she looked like a defeated cat after a long battle. I'll need to have a talk with her... about what happened. Giving a smile, the tom stood up. "No worries, I would save any of my clan mates any day." He said softly and headed out of camp.

Ferretpaw felt absolutely awful, but she tried to push forward nonetheless. She had a feeling that today's training would be very important, and she didn't want to muck it up. She drudged after her mentor, avoiding the reflective surface of a puddle on the way out. "So, what'll you have the pleasure of torturing me with today, battling, patrolling, or hunting?"

Mudfoot trotted along happily, but stopped dead in his tracks when Ferretpaw spoke. Snapping his head back to face her, the once cheery smile left his face. Torture? What did she mean? Mudfoot would never patrol if she didn't want to, had she not been enjoying their previous patrols? "What do mean torture?" He asked flatly.

Ferretpaw realized her mistake instantly. "Oh, no, not like that," she said quickly, "I just had hunch that we'd be working really hard today. Only a joke," she assured. Am I gonna keep messing up all day?

Mudfoot knew he shouldn't have gotten offended and felt somewhat dumb for not taking what she said as a joke. She'd been through a lot and going on a patrol in her state was probably hard for her. A soft smile replaced his once stern expression. "I'm sorry, I know going on a patrol in tiring and repetitive, but you ant to become a warrior, right?" The tom asked, tilting his head to the side.

Ferretpaw nodded. "Of course I do." She padded forward a bit, her shoulder receiving an irritating sting with every few pawsteps. Her entire body was aching a bit, but it was better than barely walking at all.

Giving a simple nod, Mudfoot continued forward towards the ShadowClan border. At least she is good at hiding her lies. Lying was never a good thing, but right now, he needed to focus on training her to become a great warrior. The tom left his scent in a few different places and looked back to Ferretpaw, waiting for her to do the same.

The apprentice rubbed a few trees with her flanks, marking them carefully. She worked her way around the markers that were beginning to turn stale, humming as she went. "D' you think I'll ever see that hawk again?" she asked quietly, "Because I'd really love to give him a piece of my mind." 

Waiting for Ferretpaw to catch up, he continued to walk on and pondered her question. "Well, I bet some cat has killed that mangy thing by now, but if we do see it, we'll teach it a lesson." He said with a small growl to his voice. Walking on a bit longer, he stopped and sat down. "Up for some hunting?"

"When am I not?" she questioned, getting into a stalking position. For a second, she wondered if her scar would scare away all the prey, but that was a dumb thought.

Giving a smile, Mudfoot sat in his spot, waiting for his apprentice to return with prey. He was glad that she was feeling a bit better, or at least trying to act like it.

Ferretpaw had a knack for hunting frogs, but she was a little bit shaky on furry animals. Still, she padded through the territory, tracking down a shrew. She was big enough now that slamming her paws down on it would kill it, and that's just what she did. She continued along after hiding her prey from other predators... like hawks. 

The tabby soon found herself with the shrew, a vole, and two frogs, but she wanted one more to finish the set. She scented a fat toad not more than two foxlengths from her. She approached it from the side, getting just close enough to leap straight on top of it so it couldn't hop away. She bounced square on his bumpy back, almost squashing him as he squirmed underfoot. She nipped its spine quickly and added it to the fresh-kill she had collected. "How's that looking?" she asked Mudfoot as she brought it back to him.

Mudfoot stayed where he was, waiting for his apprentice. Usually, he'd follow his apprentice, but even with her snippy attitude, he had full faith in her. Not having to wait very long, Ferretpaw soon reappeared, a plump frog in her jaws. "Perfect!" He meowed. "Want to do more hunting or move on?"
