Giving birth to life

As Shimmermist sat in the nursery, a pain filled her stomach. Nobody knew who her mate was, but a couple of cats. Shimmermist and Shallowlake just never told anyone, they figured other cats would figure it out on their own. "Shallowlake," Shimmermist yelled. Another pain came, but stronger. "They're coming! Someone get the medicine cat! Shallowlake! I need you quick!" Her breathing got heavy and she dug her claws into the mossy floor.

Shallowlake's ears perked in his sleep. "Shimmermist? Shimmermist!" he meowed frantically. The she-cat was giving birth while he was in here sleeping?! The tabby exited the den and ran for the medicine cat's den. "Help! Shimmermist's kitting!" he called, not waiting for a reply. He ran to the nursery and squeezed in. Shallowlake stopped at his mate's side and licked her ear, trying to be calm. "T-take d-deep b-breaths, Shimmermist. I-it'll be o-okay," he meowed, struggling to show her that he was calm and wasn't freaking out like he was inside.

Shimmermist nodded and started taking deep breaths. "I know it will be ok," she assured Shallowlake and herself. The kits came one by one. Shimmermist was given something for her pain. As she rest in the nursery, she looked down at her newly born kits and smiled. "Shallowlake, let's name them together," she said as she counted five in total.

An average-sized brown tabby lay curled up by his mothers belly. The un-named tom was wondering what the warm watery substance was that flowed into his small pink mouth. He then tore away from the she-cat and let out a tiny yawn.

A pale grey she-kit with white paws and legs, white tail-tip, and white belly to white muzzle, cheeks, and space above her nose let out a small mewl before suckling. She was a bit small, but drank enough that it seemed she would grow well and into an average size.

Shallowlake nodded at his mate and looked down at their newborn kits. He purred and licked Shimmermist's cheek. "Okay.." The tom's head swam with names and he sighed happily. "Shimmermist, their so beautiful!" he meowed softly. After a bit, he smiled and pointed a paw at the brown tabby kit. "Is Ripplekit okay for him?" he whispered, not wanting to disturb the kits. "And maybe Rainkit for her?" the tom asked, gently ruffling a small silver tabby she-cat's fur with a paw.

A silver tabby curled into a tighter ball around her mother's stomach. It was warm there, and if she shifted a certain way, the warmth would fade away. She squeaked when a paw stroked her fur, and she burrowed into Shimmermist's belly. The kit soon smelled a yummy scent and searched for it. A warm liquid rushed into her mouth, feeding her.

Ripplekit

The name stuck to him, as if it had been pinned to him like a second tail. Wait, I am Ripplekit! The brown tabby smiled at the new name and curled tighter against his mothers warm body. She must be called Shimmermist! But...who said that? His curious mind swirled, before realising that the tom must be his father! He couldn't wait to open his eyes and see his family, let alone the camp and even the territory! Ripplekit squirmed with excitement and purred louder.

Shimmermist nodded happily. "And how about Showerkit for that one!" She pointed to a kit they looked very much like herself, with long grey and white fur. "And that other grey and white one can be Sleetkit! And that one, that one will be Willowkit! Oh, they are so lovely!"

Sleekkit's ears moved back at the sound of her name, but she didn't do much more than snuggle up to her mother and let out another quiet mewl.

Shallowlake laughed and nuzzled Shimmermist's cheek. "Yes, they are. Guess where they got that from!" he purred, gently touching his nose to his mate's. He shifted his paw so it wasn't on Rainkit anymore.

Rainkit's ears perked and she let out a squeaky purr. She lifted her head and, almost to say be quiet, let her tiny claws out and dug them into her father's paw. The kit set her head back down and she resumed drinking.

Shimmermist purred. "Well, the Tom is handsome, just like you!" She licked Ripplekit's head. He was the only boy and the only one who looked exactly like his father...brown with Tabby markings. Rainkit and Willowkit both were silver/grey with tabby markings, and Showerkit and Sleetkit both were silver/grey and white like their mother. 

Showerkit didn't mind the talking. She just drank from her mom, then crawled over to Shimmermist's paw, searching for warmth and a place to sleep.
