Heatherfang could not believe it. Within weeks of becoming a warrior, she was already pregnant. With Rabbitwhisker's kits no less. He was a sarcastic and annoying tom, but he was her sarcastic and annoying tom. She had never expected to fall for the older cat, let alone carry his kits.

The nine weeks leading up to labor were the most excruciating weeks of her life. The irritating kicks and pains, the lack of proper sleep, and the general uncomfortable feeling was unbearable. How some queens managed to do this more than once was beyond her. The last week was the worst. Her belly was enlarged so much she looked like she swallowed a full grown warrior. The pressure on her stomach kept her awake all night and into the late afternoon. The camp was as full as it would get when a small kick turned into something bigger. The tabby queen curled in response, her claws unsheathing and raking at the moss. "Dear StarClan this hurts!" she growled and turned her yellow-green eyes to the entrance. "Rabbitwhisker, get your tail in her! You have some things you need to deal with!" she yowled, praying her mate was present. I swear, if I ever get pregnant again..

Rabbitwhisker was terrified, perhaps  even moreso than his mate, Heatherfang at his impending parenthood. He loved her, he really did with all of his heart, but kits? He was still so young, and Heatherfang was even younger. Would he even make a decent father was a prominent concern of his thoughts as the queen swelled with kits. He'd been mostly alone through his youth, raised by a combination of friendly but busy queens and Rockfall humouring him. He wondered if he even had the knowledge to father them.

But Rabbitwhisker managed to get up and face his concerns with two pieces of knowledge. That Heatherfang needed him, and that she'd be there with him, every step of the way. That's what mates did, work together, cherish each other. Though her growls from the nursery sounded like she was going to claw him a new eye socket.

Quickly, the brown tabby walked over to where his mate laid, squeezing through to aid her. With Palepaw dead, they'd have to make do alone. "Heatherfang, is it time already, huh. What do you need me to do?"

Heatherfang huffed before another wave of pain flashed through her. This time it felt different. Something was off, the queen could tell. Her mouth grew dry and bile rose in her throat. Panic washed over her. She glanced at her mate and shut her eyes, hiding the fear in her eyes. The pixiebob wasn't allowed to be afraid right now. Not when she had other, much more important matters to deal with.

Opening her eyes, she spotted a strong looking stick in the corner of the small nursery. "I need that stick," she meowed, her voice much weaker and softer than before. The same pain as before showed itself again, shaking the she-cat to her bones. Heatherfang shivered and began to push lightly, unable to wait much longer. With clenched teeth, she forced herself not to cry out in pain as the first kit slid out and onto the moss covered ground.

The spotted tabby exhaled deeply and bent back to nip the sack and begin licking the small, fawn coloured she-kit.


The kit mewed in response to the warmth being spread through her frail, tiny body.
