Fallenpaw's Assessment

Ooc: This is BEFORE the big battle so, yeah. ^^

Ic: Nightwing quietly walked into the apprentice's den and mewed loudly. "Time for your assessment." Nightwing had chosen this day, because it was warm, there where no clouds in sight, so prey would be more likely to come out of their hole. The mentor was really excited for her apprentice, not only was it her apprentice's final assessment, but Nightwing got to watch her apprentice from the shadows, like Sagestar once did for her. Eyes bright, she backed out off the den, and allowed Fallenpaw a few moments to gather herself from her slumber and wash her self. Drawing a paw over her ears, the others were, either hunting, patrolling, or finishing patching up the camp.

Fallenpaw immediately got toi her paws the moment Nightwing's voice echoed through the den. She had been awake for some time now - the excitement giving her energy and feeding off her usual restlessness. She gave a quick lick to her ruffled gray pelt, and, deeming herself presentable, padded to the entrance of the den. She couldn't believe that she was almost a warrior...Taking an assessment today only proved her accomplishments!

"I'm ready!" She mewed, feeling her voice shudder and she struggled to keep the volume controlled. Nervousness prickled in her paws, but she knew, deep down, that she could do it.

After all, Nightwing didn't doubt her, why should she?

Nightwing gave her apprentice an enthusiastic nod and waled to the entrance of camp before stopping. Turning to her apprentice, the deputy mewed, "OK, here is how it is going to go, Get as much prey as you can, before sunhigh, if you have enough, you pass!" She paused to continue out of the camp and into the march, where she glanced back at her apprentice and shouted, "Go!" Going in the other direction of her apprentice she bolted to a small shrub as she watched her apprentice go, then quietly following her.

IC: Fallenpaw was practically bouncing with excitement, enthralled by the task assigned to her. She darted into the forest, her paws skimming the ground as she headed deeper into the territory - in places where prey would be easier to find. This day was perfect for hunting, and the temperature was a little warmer than usual, making it comfortable for Fallenpaw. She needed to remind herself to thank her mentor for choosing a day like this. She slowed her pace as the foliage thickened and the earth dampened, careful to wind around stray branches or leaves that would indicate her presence to the surrounding creatures. She came here - to a more damp area of ShadowClan territory - so she could get her claws on a frog, a common delicacy for her clan. The warmer atmosphere would attract the slimy things into little ponds of water, and Fallenpaw hoped she wouldn't miss this time.

She proceeded to patrol the area, tail strait like her mentor had shown her on their first hunting session. Ears perked and eyes alert, she weaved around the shriveled leaves, crouching down as she approached a pond. A bush hid her light gray pelt from view as she spied the water, glimpsing a small rubbery animal wading in the small and shallow pond. She smiled, praying to StarClan that her paws would not slip this time around. Swerving around her cover, she tensed to spring. The frog had not taken notice to her.

She grinned, unintentionally unsheathing her claws. With one swift movement she pounced, aiming for the frog.

She felt the slippery thing struggle within her grasp, and she instinctively tightened her grip. With a swipe of her paw she snapped its neck, and she felt the frog go limp in her paws. Remembering the ritual, she clutched the piece of prey in her jaws. Thank StarClan for this prey, and may they honor your sacrifice. She thought.

With her unsheathed claws, she dug a small crevice into the earth. She carefully placed her prey into the hole, laying it down before covering it with earth. She padded the lump in the ground softly, surveying her surroundings as to memorize where she left her prize.

OC: This dice loves me.

IC: Fallenpaw continued on, listening for every sound. She walked toward the clearing where Nightwing had taught her how to hunt, a dryer area where she had found a mouse, even in leaf-bare. She kept her stance rigid, and proceeded to glance in every direction before continuing on. Within a few moments, she heard a small scuff in the earth, and she placed her ear to the ground to verify her suspicions. She licked her lips with glee, spotting a small brown creature in the distance.

Crouching, she padded forward. As Fallenpaw approached her prey, she nearly stepped on a leaf, and she quickly retreated a few step from it. Momentarily unbalanced, she caught a glance at the mouse, who was looking at its surroundings with wide eyes. Fox-dung! It had heard her. Knowing there was no longer any time to waste, she leaped for the brown ball of fur.

Once it was squealing in her paws, she put pressure against its neck, snapping in with a clean motion. She had better bury it before she searched for more. Doing as she had for the frog, Fallenpaw dug a hole and buried her mouse, again taking a mental picture of the surrounding foliage for memory.

Fallenpaw lifted her head, ears perked and eyes alert. Maybe, with a little luck, she could find some more rodents in this area before continuing on. She slid into the hunter's crouch, weaving around branches and leaves with caution. After a brief cycle, the apprentice detected a rustle in the distance. It was no mouse, the flutter sound was evidence enough, but she followed anyway. The echo led her to a low tree, with branches slightly shriveled. Perching atop its bark was a bird, with feathers black and polished. The crow titled its head and scratched under its feathers, making her tense.

She had never caught a bird before, but now was a perfect opportunity. She prepared to spring, bunching up her hind legs. In a slit second she leaped for the crow, forepaws outstretched.

She heard the rustle of the branch as the crow took flight, with multiple angry squawks to show its attitude. Fallenpaw snarled as she watched it fly away, claws clenching. She didn't give chase. That would have been useless.

Well, Fallenpaw thought as she sighed, I knew I was getting too lucky.

Fallenpaw tried not to let her failed catch burden her, knowing from experience that a negative attitude would hinder her performance. And plus - she had been quite lucky to succeed in catching the frog as well as the mouse, no way was she going to fail because she gave up! She carried on to a different area, as the noise from the crow would have scared away the prey in that clearing.

Fallenpaw stopped mid-step as she heard a sound behind her. Turning around she saw a small mouse scurrying under a bush. She unsheathed her claws, and, as she was already in the hunter's crouch, she leaped for it.

She felt herself miss the prey by a mouse-length, and she cursed under her breath.

IC: The light gray apprentice gaze lazy pursuit as the mouse scurried away, before halting as it disappeared from view. She flicked her ear in annoyance, before again searching for more prey. She scrounged the area, finally winding up with a small frog before her. She felt the dampened earth under her paws, and, crouching down, she attempted to catch it. In a split second, she leaped.

When she reached the ground, she found the frog no where to be seen. With an annoyed hiss, she said, "F*ck you dice!" she carried on in search of more prey.

Nightwing followed her apprentice, though the mash, her paw steps light. at her apprentice's first catch, her heart jumped with joy, She'll do fine! After a while, after two Nightwing thought she would have been scented for a moment, but then she realized she was way down wind from her apprentice. Come on Fallenpaw! Remember you training!

Once Fallenpaw got to her paws, she flicked a tail across her flank to brush off the dirt clumps clinging to her short fur after the impact. She hissed in annoyance, but continued on searching for prey.

After a few more minutes of searching, she spotted a mouse. Approaching it, she crouched, then blahblahblah, you know the drill leaped for it.

Once she hit the ground, she killed the prey with a swift blow to its neck, then she hastily buried it because she wanted to get this topic over with.
