Training the Youngster

Sitting in a snowy field, with a leaflet at his feet, a gray tom waited for his new apprentice to show up for her first day of training. Not only was Silentpaw probably excited, Icewhisker happened to be too. I got a new apprentice! And a granddaughter too! he cheered in his head. Now double checking that he had all the herbs needed for today, the blue eyed cat smiled, nodded, and then went back to waiting for the gray she-cat.

Silentpaw padded into the snowy field, her long gray fur dotted with snow. She smiled when she saw Icewhisker, and hurried over. "Hello, Icewhisker!"

"Hello Silentpaw. Are you feeling well?" he mewed back, smiling at the apprentice. He was going to test the she-cat to see if she learned about some herbs, like he had told her to do when they first met. Starting with bellyaches.

"I am good, how about you? And what are we going to learn first?" she asked, flicking her tail.

"Are you sure? No bellyaches? Because if you did get one you would use what?"he asked, basically ignoring her question, although he would answer it in a bit.

Silentpaw tipped her head, looking at Icewhisker. "No, no bellyaches, but you would use Juniper Berries or Parsley."

"Correct. What about a thorn in a pad? What would you use then?" he asked next, cocking his head at the young she-cat.

Silentpaw blinked, as she thought about it. "Well, first you would want to pull the thorn out with your teeth, and if it is infected, apply marigold poultice. You should also a put on a salve of chamomile to bring down swelling," she meowed, hoping she was right.

"Actually, if it's infected, you would use horsetail or chervil. Marigold is used more for major scratches instead. But if it's not, then yarrow or coltsfoot are used." he explained, now unfolding the leaflet and pointing at the four herbs usable in the situation.

Silentpaw slowly nodding, blinking. She should of gotten that right! She just shook the thought away and looked at the four herbs before her. She carefully looked at them, as she tried to figure out which was which. The tall, bristly-stemmed plant was Horsetail, while the the sweet-smelling one with large, leafy, fern-like leaves must be chervil. The one with white petals was yarrow, which must mean that the one with yellow or white flowers which somewhat looked like a dandelion is coltsfoot, she thought to herself as she gazed at them.

"Okay. Since it's quite cold in the World of the Awake, coughs are more common. Also those pesky twolegs poisoning the air is not good for any cat either. So for a normal cough, you would use tansy. For kitten cough, you would use coltsfoot, and for white, green, or black cough, you would need catnip." he explained, knowing this is important with cats dying recently from the sickness.

Silentpaw nodded, "Normal cough, you use tansy. Kitten cough, you use coltsfoot. White, green, and black you use catnip. Got it!"
