Wings Like an Angel
My scarf was wrapped tightly around my neck. Gloves covered my fingers, and a big hat came down, covering my ears. I wore two sweaters, a long-sleeved shirt, and a winter jacket. Jeans and sweatpants kept me from slipping on the icy sidewalk. Yet I was still freezing.
I was on my way from work to a small café I had seen a million times, but never been to. Suddenly, my phone rang, making me jump. I answered it and immediately recognized Mitch’s voice.
”Where are you?”
Looking both ways before crossing the street, I answered, “About two blocks away. Calm down, Mr. Impatient.” I heard static on the other end, suggesting he had sighed loudly.
”I just wanted to make sure you were coming.”
“Yes, because without you texting a reminder every thirty minutes, I would forget easily.”
”Come on, Mills, I’m really nervous about this!”
“What, never been on a date before?”
Mitch chuckled, and I could imagine him shaking his head. My foot slipped on a particularly slick patch of ice.
”No, I actually haven’t.”
This stunned me into silence. He was the jock, the popular guy. His name was all over the college section of sports articles everywhere. In fact, several girls flirted with him every day. It helped he had that good-guy aura around him, not to mention his good looks.
”Millie? You still there?”
“Yeah, sorry, I’m just not sure I’m believing you.”
I came to a stop at an intersection, waiting for the green light. Barely any cars were coming, and the ones that were drove slowly, daring to brave the icy downhill slope with chains on their tires.
”Why not?”
“Well, Mitch, lots of girls at school like you.”
”Why do they like me?”
For some reason, his voice had a surprised tone in it.
“Well, uhh . . .”
My mind reeled, thinking of all the reasons I liked him, but not wanting to sound obsessive, I tried thinking of obvious attributes.
“Well, you’re cute, I guess.” The light turned green for me to cross.
”Come on, Mills, you sound like you have a lot to say.”
I was about to reply when a startling car honk went off. Forgetting where I was, I immediately froze, looking to my right.
An SUV was sliding down the hill, its driver madly stomping on the brakes. But I could see it would not be able to stop; it had too much momentum. The lady had chosen to be one of the few not placing chains on her car, and her tires spun jerkily, trying to find traction.
Looking back on this scene later, I was told I should have jumped out of the way. Yet, I am glad I did not. And honestly, the car was moving way too fast.
The instant it hit me, the world went black. No pain registered. Tires squealed as other cars came to a halt, and car doors clicked open. The last thing I heard were the voices of other drivers, and one particular voice from the phone next to my ear.
Millie?! Millie, answer me! Where are you?! Don’t go anywhere, I’m coming!”
