Rome was destroyed by Germany (Who took over abandoned Roman forts on the border, and attacked Rome itself for the first time in 400 years and burned down the Forum), who divided the empire into many kingdoms and neglected all the many roads that they had, sadly. Plus the Vandals burned Roman records.
