| Alright. So I had to do a report on a book, and i did Long Shadows. Read and give me comments and stuff. But as this a school thing, i gotta turn it in tommorow and won't be able to change it. :P WARNING! DO NOT READ IF YOU HAVE NOT READ LONG SHADOWS!(Or ya can, if yer too lazy to actually read it. But remember, this is a general summery. I skipped stuff. :P ) Warriors: Power of Three: Long Shadows Written by Erin Hunter Report by Shannon Leong - Spoiler:
This book is the fifth in the third series of the Warriors saga. The main characters in this book are Lionblaze, Jaypaw, Hollyleaf, Ashfur, Squirrelflight, and Sol. Lionblaze and Hollyleaf are warriors are the cats who hunt and fight to protect their territory and feed their clan. Jaypaw is training to become a Medicine Cat, who helps heal his clan by using herbs and speaking with StarClan, the four warrior clan’s ancestors. Squirrelflight is the mother of Lionblaze, Hollyleaf, and Jaypaw, and hides a dark secret. Ashfur is a warrior whose heart has been darkened by his need for revenge. The cats just listed are part of the clan, ThunderClan. Sol is a cat who belongs to no clan who had come to the lake to visit the clans. He had eventually turned one clan, ShadowClan against their warrior ancestors with his strong persuasion. The setting in this book varies, as it takes place over a couple of moons (months). The places where the story takes place are ThunderClan’s territory and camp, the Tunnels, ShadowClan territory, and the Moonpool. ThunderClan’s territory is a forest filled with prey and undergrowth, and the camp is an abandoned quarry that the cats live in. The Tunnels are an underground network of tunnels that lead to both WindClan territory and ThunderClan territory, and were first discovered by cats that lived long ago. The time period is present day, because twolegs (humans) have cars and engine-powered boats. The book starts when there is a skirmish along the ThunderClan and ShadowClan border. After, Lionblaze, Hollyleaf and Jaypaw sneak onto ShadowClan territory to hear what Sol is telling the ShadowClan cats, and what Sol knows about the prophesy. The prophesy was told to Firestar, leader of ThunderClan. “There will be three, kin of your kin, ho hold the power of the stars in their paws.” The prophesy is about Lionblaze, Hollyleaf, and Jaypaw, and they are determined to find out how much Sol knows about it. Soon, many of ThunderClan fall ill to the deadly Greencough. Catmint, the only cure to Greencough, has been trampled by the recent battle, and so the medicine cats can only watch as their clanmates slowly weaken. Before long, Firestar falls ill and decides to take the sick cats to an abandoned twoleg nest near camp, to prevent the spread of the sickness. StarClan sends Jaypaw a dream of where to find catmint, and Jaypaw pleads with his brother, Lionblaze to get the catmint from WindClan territory. Terrified by his dreams of killing his once true love, Heathertail of WindClan, Lionblaze refuses. But when Firestar looses one of his nine lives to Greencough, Lionblaze gives in and goes through the tunnels to get the catmint. On his way back, he finds Heathertail waiting in the tunnels for him. Heathertail lets him go, and Lionblaze delivers the catmint to Jaypaw. Soon after, Leafpool, the medicine cat, takes Jaypaw to the Moonpool, where the clan’s medicine cats meet and speak with StarClan. When they get there, Leafpool gives Jaypaw his full name, Jayfeather. During a storm, the trees near the top of the camp catch fire, and the Clan rushes to escape. All the cats but Lionblaze, Hollyleaf, and Jayfeather get out of the camp, because as they try to get out, a flaming branch falls down, blocking the exit tunnel. Squirrelflight tries to help them get out through a secret exit, but that also get blocked. Squirrelflight tries to push a branch through for them to escape on, but a wound she had made her too weak to push the branch through. When Squirrelflight sees Ashfur, she calls for him to help. Ashfur pushes the branch past the flaming bushes, making a bridge to safety. But when the siblings try to cross, Ashfur blocks the way. Squirrelflight pleads with Ashfur to let them get to safety, but Ashfur wants them to die, to make Squirrelflight feel the pain he feels since Squirrelflight took Brambleclaw as a mate instead of him. Squirrelflight then reveals that Lionblaze, Hollyleaf, and Jayfeather are not her kits in order to get Ashfur to let them go. Ashfur lets them go, but later asks Firestar to go to the Gathering, when all clans meet in peace to share news. They assume he is going to tell Squirrelflight’s secret to all the clans, and when the chosen cats leave to go to the gathering, they find Ashfur dead in the river bordering WindClan. When his body is taken back to camp for burial, Leafpool finds clean gashes in his throat, that only a cat could make. Firestar tells the clan that it may not have been a cat from a different clan who killed Ashfur, that someone from ThunderClan may have done it. Lionblaze, Hollyleaf, Jayfeather, and Squirrelflight must all conspire to keep the truth hidden, for their own sakes, and the sake of the clan. I think that this book is one of the best books of the series. It’s action packed, dramatic, and helps you understand the characters a whole lot better. I would give this book a 10 out of 10 rating, and I would suggest this book for ages 10 and up, due to violence.
