Newleaf was here. Flutterpetal breathed in the warm breeze that began blowing up from the southern edge of the forest, feeling how it ruffled his pelt, black fur eagerly soaking up the sun and not letting go of a single ounce of its brightness. The leaf-bare had seemed to last forever. Darkness and cold had loomed above the fields for far too long. Now that the temperatures were getting higher and the days were getting longer, and the flowers were returning, he refused to waste a single moment of precious heat. Today he was on another hunting patrol with one of his Clanmates--Tigerdance, a younger warrior he hadn't spoken with much. Hopefully they could get along well. As they set out further into the moors, Flutterpetal shot his patrolmate a quick smile. He'd been so isolated during the moons they spent worrying about the Twolegs, he felt as if the Clan had progressed without him. Talking to his Clanmates was a good way to gradually get back into the swing of things.

A couple fox-lengths away from them, there was a quiet rustling of grass. Flutterpetal stopped, ears swiveling. Sure enough--there was a hare in the grass. He nodded quietly at Tigerdance, indicating that he was going to go for it. Then, eyes narrowed, he began to focus. There had been a lot more hares out in the open recently. The warmer sun was probably coaxing them out of their burrows, just as it enticed him to leave camp. He dropped low for a second, making sure that he was downwind of his prey so it wouldn't smell him. His paws were silent on the sun-dried peat. Once he felt he'd gotten close enough, he sprang forward, beginning to sprint after the hare. It didn't stand a chance. In a few short moments, the hare hung from his jaws. Flutterpetal returned to his patrolmate and shallowly buried his fresh-kill in some grass, grinning. "Okay, your turn!"

The tall tom walked alongside his patrol companion, not knowing much about Flutterpetal as the chocolate tom tended to keep to himself more than anything. While he loved his clan, some of the cats didn't exactly make a good first impression so he stuck to small conversations in passing. He tried to keep to himself during patrols too, or not saying much when it came to border patrols but today was different, at least for now it seemed. Flutterpetal seemed nice enough.. and that smile. Even as brief as it was, it still made Tigerdance's heart rate pick up. It was simply just cute, and the younger tom didn't exactly know what to think about it.

His thoughts were broken by the nod in the direction of the hare. Green eyes watched his patrol companion go after the hare, closing the gap in no time. The hare didn't stand a chance. Flutterpetal was clearly an experienced warrior. He certainly could learn something from the older tom. He just hoped he wouldn't screw his turn up now that the eyes were on him. "Alright, got it." He said to the other, his voice not as resolute as he would have liked. It seemed the other was still having an effect on him.. He needed to get ahold of himself.

He turned his attention away from his companion, and forced himself to focus on the hunt. A hare or a rabbit would do nicely. Something to help feed the clan well for a little bit. Green eyes focused on the territory looking for movement, while he was scenting for any trace of prey. A slight hop from behind a bush was all it took for him to notice a rabbit. He crouched and crept closer.

As soon as he went to start the chase an orange blur broke from the bushes as well, scaring both the warrior and the rabbit. The younger warrior paused in his stride for a second before recognizing the danger in front of him. A curse left the tom's mouth before he broke into a sprint again, striking the fox. If they could take care of this here and now, it would be one less issue later on.

Flutterpetal watched with a quiet smile and waving tail as Tigerdance went off to hunt--and nearly jumped out of his pelt at the sudden appearance of a fox. His heart dropped. Oh hare-dung. That's... that's big. The many corpses of those who had been killed by foxes and then brought dead to WindClan camp cycled through his mind. Even Daisybreeze had been.... It was difficult to even think about moving. His paws had frozen to the ground as if leaf-bare had returned early. What was one even supposed to do when they encountered a fox? Run? Scream? Fight back?

His racing thoughts were forced to halt by the fact that Tigerdance had already engaged it in a fight. The younger tom's claws were swiping at it hastily, perhaps hoping to drive it off, or just out of reaction at being startled. It was impossible to tell. Either way... there was no longer any world in which he would flee. He wasn't going to just leave his Clanmate to fight a fox alone. Though they had little chance of defeating it... they had a better chance together. So, trying not to feel as terrified as he was, Flutterpetal ran in to strike at it, paws moving swiftly, hoping that his few lessons in battle wouldn't fail him now.
