| Part 1?
On a bright but cold morning, Goldenfang’s body is found by a mentor-apprentice duo in the Flower Fields.
You are Brightclaw, a WindClan warrior who was on guard duty at the camp entrance the day before. You are the only cat in the Clan who knows when each cat left and returned during the day, and supposedly where they went. It’s up to you to find out what happened to Goldenfang, who’s responsible, and if they strike again… who will be next.
The last time you saw the deputy yesterday, she organized the day’s patrols in the morning and left camp shortly after. “To warm up after nearly freezing to death last night,” she remarked as she headed out, but there was a distant look in her eyes.
You and Daystar are working to gather information and fit it all together to find when Goldenfang died and who killed her.
- The Crime Scene:
Goldenfang’s body is cold. Her eyes stare emptily forward, and her mouth is open in a silent yowl. Her most prominent injury is a large bite wound on the front of her neck. She has several more scratches and bites along her muzzle, forelegs, chest, and belly. There is fur between her claws, but it’s dyed red. The flowers around her are crushed, staining her pelt yellow, and there are blood splatters on areas where she’s not injured. The only scents in the air are blood, flowers, WindClan, and a slight trace of garlic. On closer inspection, you see something light blue between her teeth.
- The Patrols:
Dawn patrol: Spotlake, Silverlight, Timbersun, Flamepaw, and Dreampaw. Returned at sunhigh, though Silverlight and Timbersun separated from the group at the end to hunt. Both returned alone a few hours before sundown.
Ashfall and Mistypaw: training. They said they were sparring at the Lone Stump. Returned by sunhigh.
Hunting patrol: Hayglow, Amberfluff, and Fogpaw. Went hunting along the northwest border with the twoleg place farm. Returned a few hours after sunhigh with plenty of mice, crows, and a rabbit. Scratched up from an encounter with a farm dog.
Sunhigh patrol: Shrikestorm, Swiftspirit, Brookthistle, Softpaw, and Sootpaw. Returned just after the earlier hunting patrol to report that they had a skirmish with ShadowClan over the Hidden Outcropping and lost.
Hentooth and Berrypaw: sent out an hour after treating the returning border patrol to fetch more herbs: burdock, goldenrod, comfrey, and poppy, though Hentooth was carrying a small bundle of borage flowers as she left. The pair returned at sundown with goldenrod, poppy, and feverfew.
Hunting patrol: Muddyleap, Ashfall, Swiftspirit, and Flamepaw. They left as the sun was beginning its descent and returned right before the dusk patrol left. They had several quails and a grouse.
Dusk patrol: Brookthistle, Shrikestorm, Timbersun, Berrypaw, and Maplewhisker. They wanted to make sure the Gorge was still protected since the last patrol hadn’t been able to reach it. You retired for the night before they returned. The night guard was Spotlake.
The duo who found the body was Hentooth and Berrypaw.
A summary of the day’s injuries provided by Hentooth:
Ashfall; cut along nose, torn ear, claw marks along back.
Mistypaw; bites on the shoulder, cut on head.
Amberfluff; bites on hind leg, back, tail.
Shrikestorm; claw marks along stomach, flank, back, and chest, bite on tail.
Swiftspirit; claw marks along chest, stomach, face, bite on back leg.
Brookthistle; bite on ear, scruff, and front leg, claw marks on side.
Softpaw; bite on chest, claw marks on stomach and face.
Sootpaw; patch of fur ripped from shoulder, claw marks on side and flank.
With this evidence, you and Daystar decide to ask a few members of the Clan some questions.
- “Silverlight, Timbersun, did either of you see Goldenfang while you were hunting that morning?”:
They both shake their head no, ears drooping. Silverlight stares emptily at the ground, tears pricking at his eyes. Timbersun shuts his eyes tightly.
- “Fogpaw, who did the dog attack on your patrol?”:
”Amberfluff! She ran under a bush after a mouse, and the thing chased her right out! I thought it was going to take her back leg off the way it threw her around!”
- “Ashfall, did you get into a real fight with your apprentice?”:
”Yes. I didn’t mean to. We were angry and… working out our differences.”
- “Brookthistle, why did you go on another patrol after being injured?”:
”You think I’m gonna let anyone else take any of our territory away? Not on my life!”
- “Flamepaw, did your evening hunting patrol stay together?”:
”Kind of? We’d find somethin’ and run after it and bring it back to show off, and someone else would go after another, ‘n it just went like that most of the time.”
- “Spotlake, did the dusk patrol return with any new injuries?”:
”I’m honestly not sure. Shrikestorm and Brookthistle both had dried blood on their pelts, but they said their injuries reopened.”
With this information gathered and the day’s events mapped out, you look Daystar in the eyes. The names are swirling in your head, but one rises above the others.
Timbersun.
Ashfall.
Amberfluff.
Shrikestorm.
Swiftspirit.
Brookthistle.
Spotlake.
Hentooth.

okay I think it was Hen- here’s why.
First of all, Hen isn’t the biggest fan of Golden after she nudged out Ash for the deputyship. She’s gotten over it IC but she’s practically the only one with a motive of any sort.
Secondly, Golden was distant and remarked on how she was freezing to death- she shouldn’t have been that cold, especially not in a crowded den. This is a symptom of a fever-
And Hen left with borage, which is blue and used to treat fevers. My hypothesis is that Hen distracted her by telling her to eat this plant which would help. Then, while she was distracted, slit her throat. Despite her wounds, Golden struck out, but Hen subdued her, accounting for the scratches. Golden then died of blood loss and Hen cleaned up her scent with garlic, which other cats might not know about.
Overall my bird gal did a good job, remembering to slit her throat instead of just poisoning her, which would’ve pointed to a meddie. She did make a few mistakes- taking the borage with her instead of stashing it in an easily accessible place, not remembering to check Golden’s mouth, and using borage when she could’ve just used leaves.
I do have a few questions- how did she slip away from Berry? What is her real motive (if she has one)? And why did she give Golden borage for the fever, when she could’ve just distracted her with something else? Borage would lead to her-
Aha. This, mes amis, was not a premeditated crime. Hen brought the borage with her with the intent of seeking out Golden and trying to help her, as she knew the deputy had whitecough recently. She didn’t mention it to Berry (or something- net result he didn’t talk) and went off to find her. This explains why she brought the borage. After giving the deputy the borage Golden, perhaps in a feverish and slightly delirious state, said something that made Hen slit her throat. Despite the fatal wound, Golden went down fighting, evidenced by the fur between her claws. That’s where she got the scratches.
Afterwards, Hen panicked, covered the scent with garlic, and pretended to “discover” the body.
Also she is smart and wouldn’t mention her own (likely minor) injuries from subduing Golden. Golden was feverish and dying from blood loss so likely wouldn’t be able to do much to a battle-trained meddie who took her by surprise.
Edit: also the next victim will probs be Berrypaw since he might know something and Hen intimidated him into silence? Or maybe she’s getting paranoid and wants to get rid of anyone with herbal knowledge to contradict her anything.
Edit 2: OR…
Most of this played out as above, but Golden managed to put up more of a fight, crushing the surrounding flowers. Now, since Hen’s pelt is orange and black, the yellow wouldn’t be that obvious. The only problem is that Berrypaw would notice the wounds she tried to hide… so Berry is next victim in this case.
Or Ash thought Golden was Dawnhawk and killed her but that’s unlikely, even if Golden was severely sick and crushed the flowers herself in her stumbling, dying her fur gold.

Goldenfang hadn’t bitten her attacker, since Brightclaw could tell that whatever was in her mouth was blue. Now, if it wasn’t Hen, I don’t know why she would have flowers or something in her mouth. So… we come to a bit of a dead end in some respects. However, there are some I don’t think could’ve done it.
Ashfall and Mistypaw- were busy trying to kill each other.
The patrols that got into fights- too busy trying to not die.

Despite the conviction in your voice, you don’t quite have the confidence you need to convict a murderer. Daystar has doubts, too, and suggests you ask a few Clanmates if Hentooth, Ashfall, or Brookthistle have been acting unusual over the last few days. Some of the younger warriors and apprentices can be impressionable, though, so you are careful to ask an open-ended question to avoid influencing their answer.
“Hayglow, has anyone been acting strangely recently?”
“Poor Silverlight’s torn up over it all. It makes sense as he and Goldenfang have been getting quite close lately, but I heard they were having an argument.”
“Brookthistle, has anyone been acting strangely recently?”
“If you ask me, Shrikestorm seems glad Goldenfang isn’t around anymore. He never thought she was a good deputy.”
“Swiftspirit, has anyone been acting strangely recently?”
“Timbersun keeps avoiding me. He won’t look me in the eyes when I talk to him…”
“Ashfall, has anyone been acting strangely recently?”
“I don’t know about anyone in particular, but it’s weird that ShadowClan ambushed us in broad daylight yesterday. Does someone here have a connection to them that we don’t know about?”
“Berrypaw, has anyone been acting strangely recently?”
“…Goldenfang. When Hentooth was out a few days ago, she asked me for sorrel and chamomile. I didn’t know she knew those herbs.”

| I like this too much- - another theory:
OK SO-
It has to be Hen. The “oh yes Silver and Golden argued” or “oh yes Shrike didn’t like her” are too obvious. The ShadowClan thing, though, gives me an idea.
Sorrel and chamomile increase strength and are likely traveling herbs. The important thing about this, though, is that it shows Goldenfang knew her herbs. Hen couldn’t slip her a poison, or give her anything other than borage for her fever. She’d be running the risk that Golden knew the plant and would become suspicious. She needed to use borage to distract Golden.
Hen tells Burning about Swift on accident. She tries to cover up her mistake and doesn’t tell anyone. Golden, however, overhears them. Later, she meets Hen and says point blank that they can’t have a meddie with such little constraint. She doesn’t think this is a big deal- it’s a warning for the future, not a threat. Hen, however, takes it the wrong way, and, scared for her station and her pelt, tells Burning that Swift will be near the Hidden Outcropping that day. Burning’s patrol duly attacks, preoccupying many of the warriors and ensuing Golden’s murder goes unnoticed.
To conclude, Hen’s only mistake was not checking Golden’s teeth- but she did check the claws, good job.
Also Timber’s all cute and embarrassed near Swift! Timberspirit or Swiftsun?

Now ShadowClan could be involved, and some of your Clanmates secretly resent one another? Oh, boy. At least Daystar agrees that it’s worth confronting Hentooth about the borage. You both seek out the medicine cat in her clearing, unsure what to expect. She sits there, back to you, as you enter her den, and you hear her voice rise.
“I should’a said somethin’. I should’a told someone before all this nonsense happened.” Hentooth turns to you and Daystar with tears in her eyes, and you see a bundle of herbs at her paws. “Goldenfang was pregnant. She an’ I have been meetin’ in the Flower Fields for the past moon so I can give her herbs t’ increase her strength. Sorrel, so she didn’t have t’ go so far t’ get a drink an’ sooth her joints; chamomile, t’ keep her focused on her responsibilities an’ get her through the day. But she wouldn’t let me tell anyone, an’ wouldn’t say who the father was. She had this condition o’ sorts, didn’t sleep much an’ couldn’t stay put for long. Ever notice how easily she bled, an’ too much? Prob’ly not, but Smallbean said it had some kind’a connection. I was afraid. I thought havin’ kits would kill her, so agreed to keep her secret t’ get her t’ eat the herbs. I jus’ recently started givin’ her borage to get milk production started. If I’d made her admit her pregnancy and stay in the nursery, she’d still be alive.”

Wounded from battle already? Garlic is used to prevent serious infection, I have a gut feeling it's Shrikestorm. They have multiple scratch wounds, why did they go out after being injured? Not to protect their clan, to kill Goldenfang. As for a motive? Never thought Goldenfang was a good Deputy, although not a string motive, it's something. There's definitely some evidence that points towards them. They were out after sunhigh, also noted to be glad Goldenfang was gone. There's my vote. Though I could be wrong.
