Crowcaller had never seen quite so many cats before. With Asylum's takeover, life had changed in the ThunderClan camp... it seemed like there was always somecat coming or going, busy in one way or the other. The dark tabby kind of loved it. While he didn't appreciate the hostility with which the Nightstrikers had assumed control, he had to admit, the clashing of so many different types of cats, from so many lifestyles, made it easy to learn new things, and Crowcaller liked to learn new things. He'd actually taken to following the Nightstrikers, rather than the other way around, listening to their conversations, watching how they sparred and hunted.

He'd learned a lot so far, and he intended to put it to use. ThunderClan had never been weak, but there was always room for improvement, and if he had it his way, Crowcaller would be training the next generation of ThunderClanners in all types of new forms. That started today, with a small patrol sent out to the edge of the territory, to remark the border, and do a bit of hunting, too. Crowcaller was near the back of the patrol, and had paused to sniff at the roots of a tree when some movement caught his eye. He turned, spying a squirrel clinging to a branch a fox-length away from the ground. Crouching, he sprinted forward and ran up the tree to the limb in a short burst of speed, leaping to the branch. It bent under his weight, and the squirrel lost its footing, plunging to the ground. Crowcaller was after it instantly, and they hit the ground at the same time, the gray-striped tom right on top of the rodent. He killed it quickly, and then glanced up at the still-rocking treebranch and grinned.

Horrifying events of the takeover itself aside, Asylum’s arrival was a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. A chance to interact with cats from every corner of the world, both the ones she knew and the ones she’d never see; to learn how they hunted and fought and healed, and how their culture differed from that of the Clans. All that knowledge had fallen a whisker’s length from Thrushnose’s paws, just…waiting. Now she was alone in raising Badgerpaw, alone in keeping her secret safe, alone in her late-night adventures. Some deeply-buried part of her still found magic in the unfamiliar; she had no energy left to dig for it.

At a loss, she fell back on her tried-and-true method for returning to normalcy: pretending she already had. And so, when she was assigned to a patrol near the border (under Asylum supervision, of course), Thrushnose picked herself up and trailed alongside the rest of the group. A rustling sound from a nearby bush drew her attention in time for her to see a plump mouse poke its nose out through the tangle of branches. Pressing herself against the dirt, she waited until the trailing end of its tail emerged. One heartbeat, two—then Thrushnose sprang. Her paws pushed the air out of her target’s lungs before it could squeak; she killed it before it could get its breath back. No sound. As clean a catch as she could ask for. She returned to her patrolmates, carrying the mouse with quiet triumph.

Shrikesong was assigned to another patrol, this one with a little different than patrols before... the takeover. When ThunderClan was taken over by Asylum, the warrior had no choice to surrender. 'Asylum', as they called themselves, was too powerful for the clan to take down alone. I wish that Asylum could just go away. Of course, they weren't going away soon, since they were trying to absorb the five clans into their own territory. The young she-cat wasn't keen on that, but she knew that she had to bide her time for a resistance to take hold. After all, there wasn't anything ThunderClan could do yet. They needed Asylum to be weaker before they could strike.

The young she-cat crouched down, noticing a grouse far away in the distance. As the brown she-cat got closer and closer, avoiding the leaves on the ground that seemed to decrease in number every day. With the bird not paying attention, the warrior was able to get close enough to it to try to catch it. The bird wasn't able to react in time from Shrikesong's pounce. Breaking a small smile, the young she-cat bit at the brown bird's neck. Bringing the grouse to the rest of the patrol, the young she-cat buried the bird in the ground to protect from a predator. At least hunting was able to distract her from her sadness. She would've talked with her family, but ThunderClan camp didn't feel as safe as it used to, so the young warrior didn't want to talk about it for now. Also, she was sure that other cats were feeling the exact same way.
