Hurry Or You Just Might Melt! [closed for Yosh]

Newttongue purred and finished grooming his fur. It was certainly good to be back. He had spent the past few days catching up with his family, letting himself rest and his paw pads heal. But, that time was over. It was time to train his new apprentice! He trotted over to the apprentice den with a slight bounce in his step. "Snowpaw, let's get going! It's a bit cooler out here, it might rain soon. Trust me, you'll be thankful for the weather change for your training. We can share our first catch as a team together afterward." He purred slightly, looking into the den with his warm yellow eyes.

Snowpaw perked up her ears at the call of her mentor, and immediately her body surged with excitement. Today she would begin her first day of training! How exciting! She rushed out of the apprentices' den and up to Newttongue. "I'm here, Newttongue! I'm so excited! What are we gonna hunt for? Juniper berries? Burdock root? Ooo, what about raspberries or blackberries? Those are my favorite, even if the blackberries stain my coat for a few days."

"You know what? We'll get some blackberries while we train. That'll be your first task, tracking them down with this little thing here." He flicked her nose before smiling a bit more. "I might even show you something out there. You seem like the type to appreciate things other than mice. You may like it. Now, come on. Let's not waste this pre-storm breeze!" He said, leading Snowpaw out of camp. He looked around as he walked, spotting brambles nearby. Perfect. He guided Snowpaw away from it before stopping. Hopefully, she could scent the sweet berries tangled in them. "Alright, go ahead and track down some blackberries. Don't eat them right away, I have to make sure you don't eat poison."

Snowpaw gave a trill of amusement as her mentor booped her nose. She really liked this tom already. He followed Newttongue out of camp and stopped when he did, and she listened to his instructions carefully before walking towards the bramble thicket. Thankfully, she remembered what blackberries smelled like when a few apprentices brought some back to camp one time, and she absolutely fell in love with the berries. She had never been fond of fresh-kill, no matter how many times her mother and father tried to make her eat a mouse or squirrel. It was just too messy and furry and rich. With berries, they were sweet and juicy, not nearly as messy as prey, but at the same time wasn't nearly as filling either. She must be the only cat in existence to prefer berries and nuts and herbs over a cat's typical carnivorous diet.

She was careful not to prick her nose with the sharp thorns as she carefully sniffed them, searching for the dark-colored berries. Finally, she caught a whiff of the familiar scent, and she poked her muzzle carefully between a few brambles. There, she could see them! A whole smorgasbord of blackberries! She withdrew her muzzle and turned to Newttongue, her tail swishing excitedly. "I found them!"

The tom purred and went over to her, looking at the brambles with a nod. "Perfect! You'll probably be a favorite among kits and queens if you bring some back to them but you can have this find. Now, watch closely. You'll have to work with brambles when the dens or wall need a bit of work after a nasty storm or anything else. You don't want to be the one with thorns in you." He looked over the brambles, carefully biting at the sections that had no thorns and making an easier. With his bushy tail, he brushed away the bits on the ground. He then nipped at the tendrils with the most berries and carried it in his jaws. The tom put them down on the ground. "Alright, we can grab a few of the brambles. Go ahead and eat some before we start truly hunting."

Snowpaw purred, overjoyed, and she bent down to nip up some of the juicy blackberries, staining her lips and a bit of her muzzle purple. She didn't want to go crazy with eating them, as what Newttongue had just said made her want to share these sweets with the other cats of her Clan as well. She licked her lips and lifted her head back up once she had consumed about ten of them. "Mmmmm, they're so good! Thank you, Newttongue!"

Now came the part she wasn't really looking forward to: hunting prey. She knew that most cats -- if not all of them aside from her -- ate fresh-kill and had to live off of it, but she couldn't stand the thought of eating something sentient and dead. Sure, plants were technically alive as well, but they weren't the same alive as cats and prey were. She shuddered at the thought of biting into a mouse, catching its listless, fear-stricken beady eyes as it seemed to stare up at her, begging and pleading her not to eat it.

The tom purred and flicked her ear with his tail before scenting the air. "Ah, perfect. There's some prey around here. I'll show you how it's done and then we can break it down from there." He meowed, before the scent of pigeon filled his mind. He saw it pecking at something in the grass nearby. He flicked his tail, motioning for her to watch before creeping along the ferns. He got close and pounced from above. He landed on top of it and quickly broke it's neck for a clean kill.

Snowpaw struggled to suppress a shudder of disgust when her mentor killed the bird. Well, so long as he and her other Clanmates enjoyed it and got strength out of it, she supposed she'd might as well give them more.

She closed her eyes and sniffed for some more prey, and soon she caught the whiff of a mouse. She spotted it nibbling on a grass stalk a few tail-lengths away, and she crouched down to stalk towards it just as she had seen her mentor do with the pigeon. I'm so sorry about this, little mouse, she told the creature in her thoughts before bundling her muscles, getting ready to pounce.

All of a sudden, a large brown bird swooped down and scooped up the mouse before she could make her first kill. She gasped in alarm as the owl's eyes caught hers, and it swooped down, reaching out one talon as the other still gripped the squirming mouse. Before Snowpaw knew what had happened, sudden pain scorched through her face where the talons had struck.

Newttongue watched his apprentice with a flicker of pride in his eyes as she tracked down a mouse. He waited patiently, watching her form to make note of any bad habits or mistakes to catch before they became embedded in her technique. The sound of wings and Snowpaw's gasp filled him with sudden dread and he sprang into action, pouncing onto the owl. It was a struggle to stay on it's back, the motion of wings flapping making him nearly fall. His mind flashed to the last time he had fought a bird, nearly having his neck snapped twice in that fight before Birchheart could kill it. He wasn't going to lose his apprentice to the mite-bitten creature.

Newttongue used Leap-And-Hold. -13 HP -10 SP. He can't be hurt for one turn.

Snowpaw's fur bushed out in terror as she stared at her own mentor wrestling with a bird even bigger than he was. What should she do? What could she do? She hadn't even had any battle training yet, she had no idea what to do to help! But she knew she had to do something. She tentatively approached the owl and swiped her claws against its beak, yelping as it screeched at her and darting away to hide behind a tree.

Newttongue watched her slip into the trees and felt relived. Why now out of all times did an owl have to swoop in like this? It was Snowpaw's first training session! He felt his grip on the bird slip and fell with a thud onto the ground. Scrambling up, he lashed out with a paw to at least stagger the creature before it could find some way to maul him.

Snowpaw whimpered, and she was about to rush out again to try and land another attack, but the owl was able to shake Newttongue off and take flight again, and she dove right back into hiding.

The owl screeched in fury and dove down at Newttongue to score its talons down his side.
