Figuring Out the Old New Territory

Falconstar yawned and stretched, still getting used to something at once familiar and unfamiliar. This territory used to belong to them, as the old, legitimate SkyClan was long gone. Still, he wasn't used to actually sleeping in it. Hopefully it would only be temporary. Meanwhile though, they still needed to make sure everything was secure. Standing up, the leader made his way over to Kestrelpaw, gently nudging his apprentice. "Kestrelpaw, let's go see what our new territory has to offer."

Icestorm and Cedarfur came from a hunting patrol, each carrying a plump squirrel. They dropped them at the "new" freshkill pile and trotted over to Falconstar. "Falconstar, Cedarfur and I found a great place to hunt squirrels." The older tom said, happy to have found it.

"The place is practically loaded with prey! It's kind of hidden away and there's no scent of SkyClan or kittypets!" Cedarfur said to their leader, starting to get excited.

Kestrelpaw woke with a start to see his favorite cat standing over him. Leaping up, he nodded. "Oh yes, that would be a great idea." It would be his first outing with his leader, and he could hardly control himself. He still couldn't get over the honor of being the leader's apprentice.

Falconstar nodded in approval towards the two warriors. "Excellent find. I will take a look at it later. For right now, I'm going to show Kestrelpaw around the territory." Ushering the excitable apprentice forward, he led him out of their temporary camp.

"This used to be ours for a time," he meowed plainly, gazing around the expansive trees. "The real SkyClan died off many moons ago."

"Really?" Kestrelpaw asked, venturing forward slightly. "How did we hunt? We can't climb trees." Kestrelpaw asked, confused. He stopped, looking up the tree. He lifted his paw and felt the bark.

"Well, we didn't live here. We just held part of the territory. All of it at one point." Falconstar chuckled softly, bringing back those memories. "It was mostly for having more land, since you're right, we aren't adapted to trees."

Kestrelpaw thought for a second, contemplating why they would even have a territory if they didn't need or use it. "But wouldn't having this extra land we didn't need make us a target to other clans?" He pondered out loud, darting to sniff at a bush.

"Not necessarily." Falconstar continued to lead Kestrelpaw around the territory, skirting along the edges of the trees and occasionally stopping to mark their new lands. "We all need to respect strength, and our clan is very strong. Hopefully the rest of the forest has realized this by now."

"My mother used to tell me it was big and strong and respected because of you and your kin, Falconstar." he purred in admiration, stopping back and trotting next to Falconstar. He was getting tall, almost the height of Falconstar now.

Falconstar laughed quietly, a low rumble as they curved around a bend of trees on the way back towards the camp. "Well I'm very flattered. Of course, WindClan has become as strong as it has due to all of our clan, from the strongest warrior to the youngest kit."

"How does a kit help? They only eat prey and use herbs." he wasn't trying to be rude, he was confused. "And they need our protection. They don't do anything!" He walked next to Falconstar.

Falconstar chuckled quietly, playfully batting Kestrelpaw over the head with a paw. "Well, those kits will someday become warriors, and wouldn't you agree that they're important to the clan?"
