On this day, 99 years ago, Archduke Franz Ferdinand (heir presumptive to the Austro-Hungarian throne) and his wife were assassinated in Sarajevo by a Yugoslav nationalist backed by Serbian military officers (Serbia had been angered because Austria-Hungary had annexed Bosnia and Herzegovina). This led to Austria-Hungary declaring war on Serbia, and because of the complicated web of alliances in Europe at the time, it eventually dragged every major Power into the war. This started World War I (37 million casualties) and created conditions that later led to World War II (60 million casualties). This in turn led to the Cold War and shaped the modern world as we know it.

tl;dr some skinny foreigner shot some dude which made everything you know today possible
