| Prologue Samuel raced through the woods. ‘I can’t let them catch me!’ His brain thought, feverishly. Trees rushed at him with surprising speed as he ran from his previous captors. Darts whistled by him as Samuel dodged trees and galloped over roots. Dogs were barking behind him. He had almost thought of them as family…once, long ago, before the cages; the tests. Samuel knew that they would do anything to get him back. He had heard rumors, rumors of escapees living out here, out here in the woods. ‘Dark, Daniel. Got to find them!’ He reviewed their information in his head. They were felians: part feline, part human. He was a carian: part canine, part human. They wouldn’t accept him. He was far too different. The screams and barks behind him had faded away and the world was beginning to turn cold. Hypothermia was starting to creep into his bones. The cold he would never awake from. Samuel collapsed. Just before the world became the dark blackness, two silhouetted figures stood above him. ‘Now…I die.’ His brain told him, and Samuel slipped into Morpheus’s eternal blackness of unconsciousness. Chapter 1
A period of time later, Samuel began to wake up. When the world came into focus, there was a girl, fourteen maybe?, working on his side and chest area. Then, he noticed two things. 1. He was alive. 2. He was alive. She looked at his face and smiled. “See you’re awake.” Her voice was sweet, it was as if her voice was freedom. And Samuel wanted more. He tried to say something but all that came out was a strangled groan. “Shhh,” She scolded. “You’re still too weak. I’m Dark. I suppose you know who I am. And when you recover, we’ll know you.” The girl; who apparently was Dark: his hero, explained. Samuel’s eyes widened. He was meeting his idol, she was treating his wounds, and this was like a dream come true…minus the wounds of course. There was nothing to do, so he watched Dark treat his wounds. By midday, she was done. “I think you’re strong enough to try and talk now,” She mused. “I- I’m Samuel,” He said, shakily.

| Chapter 2 Dark nodded. Facing the shadowed back of the room she called: “Singe! Bring clover, dock, and maple!”Then, Dark turned back to him. “Oh, keep going.” She said. “Just getting some supplies.” Samuel understood. “ They… they tried to hurt me. Needles…pain…tests…but I can’t remember anything else.” Samuel rubbed his temples. Where were the memories before that? “Oh, so you escaped? They’ll be hunting for you, but you’re safe here.” Dark said. A flutter of wings caught Samuel’s attention and he watched as a large bird of prey dive-bombed Dark. “Singe!” Dark laughed, obviously having fun. “What…” Samuel was utterly confused. “That’s a big bird….” “Well of course it is. He’s Singe, my hawk.” Dark smiled. She looked at the cave entrance. “Okay.” Dark said, turning back to Singe. “Can you fetch my pedestal?” Dark asked the bird. Singe flicked his wing in reply and flew into the darkness of the cave. “Daniel should be back soon.” She said. Dark then pushed her perfect back and white hair out of her eyes and sat down on a pile of blankets that was apparently her bed. Night had fallen and Dark looked too tired to stand. “C’mon, it’s night and time to get some rest.” She murmured. Samuel nodded. He settled himself on his own bed and soon, both were in a deep slumber; each for different reasons. Dark slept so soundly because the whole day she was running around, helping Singe with his newborn hawks, treating Samuel’s injuries, and keeping the cave clean. Samuel was snoring slightly because he had been badly injured while running from the lab. But alas, neither heard the lurans; part human part wolf; creep in. Neither felt being gagged of stuffed into a bag, limbs tied. Dark and Samuel were thrown into the back of a truck. A truck far too familiar for Dark. Their truck. |

| Chapter 3 Dark was snarling at some humans when Samuel awoke. It appeared that Dark was very angry that the humans kept poking and prodding her. “Leave her alone!” Samuel rose to Dark’s defense. “Oh? The little one talks? Well, we’ve studied Experiment 2R316. Put it back.” One said. That seemed to cross Dark’s line. “What have you done with Daniel?” She shrieked. They just laughed. The cage door was opened and a dark shape dropped in. It didn’t move. The humans jotted down some notes and left. “Daniel…” Dark murmured, a tear dripping down her cheek. The form stirred. “Daniel…” Dark whispered again. The person, apparently Daniel, opened his eyes. He squinted his red eyes. “I’m…I’m 2R316. Who…who are you?” His voice was shaky. Dark looked heartbroken. Samuel had just sat in a corner, silently. Dark crawled away from Daniel and backed into the wall. In a corner, she curled up in a feeble position and cried. Samuel followed her. “It’s okay,” He whispered in her ear. “It’ll all work out.” Dark just stared at him; tears welling in her eyes. Daniel had been looking at them. “Let’s me handle this,” Dark said between shaky breaths. “I’m Dark, remember? And you’re Daniel.” Dark stated. Daniel scooted to the far corner of the cage. “No, no, no!” He screamed.
