Stormpaw's Hunting Training

Gracestep stood with Stormpaw on the moors. "Show me how fast you can run." she meowed.

Stormpaw flexed his long legs, and spotted a bush which was a few fox-lengths ahead of them. He broke into a dash, and soon reached the bush, his eye shining. "How was that?"

"Perfect" she meowed. "Now, show me your best hunting crouch." she meowed, ready to fix something.

Stormpaw nodded and did his best crouch, thinking about how his father showed him how to do it as a kit.

Gracestep gave a nod of approval. "See that rabbit? You would have to stalk it. It should run away, which is where your legs come in. Then you'd have to chase it. Watch." she meowed quietly. She stalked the rabbit untill it's ears pricked up. It noticed her and raced off. Gracestep tore after it.

Stormpaw smiled as he watched the rabbit disappear down a hole. "You missed it," he laughed, and noticed another rabbit not far from him. He dropped into his crouch and slowly moved toward the rabbit, and once he felt he was close, he raced after it, and it broke into a run. It was closing onto it's den, so Stormpaw kicked off and leaped at it, pinning it to the ground before giving it a killing bite.

Gracestep nodded approval. "Good job. Now let's see if you can catch that mouse." she motioned her tail to a mouse nibbling on a seed in the heather. "Stalk it, and once you're a tail length away, pounce on it." she meowed.

Stormpaw nodded slowly. His long longs wasn't meant for leaping, and he was afraid that he might over-shot his leap. He slowly pulled himself toward the mouse, his icy blue eyes fixing on it, worry flashing for a moment. He was soon a few tail-lengths away, but he was afraid that getting any close would scare the mouse off. He leaped at it, and his paw landed on the mouse's tail, which cause it to squee. It quickly pulled it tail free and raced away, and Stormpaw give a chase, only that he didn't see a rock. His paw hit the rock and he fell face-first into the ground and the mouse disappeared into a bush. "Mouse-dung!" he growled, as he got to his paws, making sure his paw was ok.

Gracestep just smiled "You could've caught it, just watch out for rocks." she meowed, " That's all.

Stormpaw snorted, shaking his foot. "Yea, what ever."

Gracestep whacked his ear. "I'm your mentor. You shalln't talk to me like that!" she meowed.

Stormpaw suddenly dropped into a crouch, his fur fluffed up and his eyes wide with fear. His torn ear started to flick as he dropped his gaze to his paws. He thought about the day he got his torn ear, the ear that Gracestep had whacked and started to shake. "I-I'm sorry," he mewed, knowing that if he ever talked to his father like that, he would end up getting a torn pelt.
