Kits will be kits

Violetkit, a tiny grey and white she-kit, let out a loud mew, stumbling as she tried to regain balance on her tiny paws but failed and fell on her side. She twisted onto her soft back and waved her paws mentally in the air, mewing loudly and defiantly as she did so. A large gold tom, Goldflame, can over and picked his kit up gently and placed her back on her fluffy white paws. "Lets hope she doesn't claw out too many eyes with those paws!" Goldflame laughed to Scarletfire, his mate. Violetkit let out a furious squeal in response.

Scarletfire was glad that the kits had finally opened their eyes just the other day. She said nothing, just watched and smiled. She wondered why Happykit was so shy. "Son, don't be so shy. Go on," she urged a grey kit. His markings were finally visible. Happykit was lying on his belly, unable to stand or walk as well either. "Muew...!" he replied, trembling as his shaky legs held him up. Toppling down, his mother picked him up and set him down in the center of his family.

Inkkit was wriggling towards Violetkit. "Grr!" he said. That was all Inkkit really said at the time, and his blue eyes gleamed brightly. He slapped the ground with a single paw as he tried to squirm towards his sister. After awhile when he finally reached her, his tiny mouth, which was toothless, engulfed her paw. "Mmmngh...!"

Happykit was busy staring at a blade of grass. He seemed to weave back and forth as he sat, turning his head around oddly. Scarletfire took immediate action and strided over to her son. "Goldflame, come here for a second," she said, staring into Happykit's eyes. "Look at his eye. It's... a little clouded."

Goldflame had seen the clouding of the eyes before. It was most often blindness. "He's..." Goldflame let his voice drift away, knowing Scarletfire would understand his unfinished sentance. He gently licks Happykit's ear and held him up gently letting him stand on his paws with a bit of help.

Violetkit squealed loudly as her paw was engulfed in a warm, wet mouth that belonged to her brother. "No foxdung!" she yowled the only two words she had in her vocabulary. Which were No and Foxdung. "Foxdung no!" She pulled her paw out quickly, her lilac eyes glaring at her brother Inkkit, and pounced on him, only managing to pounce on the left side of his body. "No foxdung!" She mewed quietly. Goldflame, looking surprised at his daughters words, laughed but glanced nervously at Scarletfire.

Scarletfire nodded. "It's only one eye at least," she breathed. Glancing up, she stared at Violetkit. Padding over to her daughter, she nosed her. "Don't say that. Say Happykit. That's your brother's name, Violetkit," she said, repeating Happykit's name a few times.

Inkkit fell to his side when he felt her feeble paws poke him. "Grr!" he growled, swatting at her with a paw that could barely reach her.

Happykit felt his father's teeth on his scruff. ".....Eu..!" He stared at him with a cloudy eye, but he turned his head to look at him with a clear one. "Eu! Eu!" he cried, scrambling to his paws.

Violetkit hissed at being told off, so she kept repeating the two words over and over again. She then suddenly said Happykit mid-rutine, surprising herself. She then repeated Foxdung and No even louder, pretending it never even happened. She stided around declairing the two words as a proud mother would announce her kits were healthily born. Goldflame gave the little kit a hard stare but she didn't see it so she went on reapeating the words loudly until Goldflame picked her up with a quick motion and sat her down beside her mother. "Don't say foxdung, but never say cladum!" Goldflame told her sternly, winking at Scarletfire. Violetkit stopped her chanting and looked at Goldflame and Scarletfire innocently. "Cl-claddam? Cladum!" She said, strolling around happily. "Cladum! Cladum! Cladum!"

Scarletfire was losing her temper. Lashing her tail about, she opened her mouth to speak, but settled down when Goldflame thought of a solution.

Inkkit blinked, and stared at the Nursery entrance. He scrambled over, waddling like a lopsided badger (totally didn't get that from the books ;D). He squinted as the sun filtered in, but he enjoyed it. Before he could reach it, he was picked up by the scruff by his mother, and set back down in the center of kits. "Grr!" he complained.

Happykit comforted his brother by clambering onto his back and mewling loudly. Toppling over, he let out a distressed mew while wriggling on his back.

Nightpaw padded over to th nursery "Hi Scarletfire, hello little kits"

Violetkit pounced on Nightpaw's tail, holding onto it with her blunt, tiny claws as she pretended it was an intuder. She yowled as she tried to keep her balance. Goldflame smiled at Nightpaw. "Sorry, she's a bit hyper," he explained. "Go on, Happykit, go play with your brother and sisters." Goldflame tried to make the kit go over to his brother and his sister.

"Oh it's ok" he said and smiled and weakly started swishing his tail back and forth. He saw Happykit "Hello he mewed

Scarletfire watched the apprentice approach. "Greetings, Nightpaw."

Happykit looked up at Nightpaw, and felt a tinge of... what was this? Fear? What did "hello" mean? Did it even have a meaning? "Meuw!"

"Happykit, say hi back," she told him, watching her kit.

Happykit blinked. "...H... Hi!" he said, trembling as the word fell from his lips. "Hi," he repeated again, blinking. Turning to his mom, he stared at her with questioning eyes. "Hi?"

"You say it when you meet someone, Happykit. We say it all the time. You could also say 'Hello'," she explained, her eyes softening.

"...... He- He- Hello. H- Hello?" he echoed, turning back to Nightpaw. "Hello! Hi!" The kit's long furry tail swished across the Nursery floor. "Hi! Hello!"

Nightpaw smiled "They're beautiful" he meowed

"Foxdung!" Violetkit shouted, wanting attention back from Happykit's new words and to her rude word that she didn't understand. Goldflame growled gently, reminding her not to say it.

The kit blinked with confusion. Beautiful? What did that mean, too? "Hi! Hello!" Happykit snapped back to his sister, turning to face her.

Inkkit trudged over. "Grr!" he chimed in, staring with unblinking eyes.

"Indeed. Someday, you might be their mentor," she thought aloud.

Happykit stared off at the entrance. "...? Meaow?"

Scarletfire shook her head. "You'll have to wait a few more days, Happykit, before you can go outside. It's much too dangerous for a kit like you."

Defianly, Happykit looked away with a sad mewl. "Maou!" he squeaked to Violetkit once more.

Nightpaw asked "would you like a mouse Scarletfire?"

Scarletfire looked at him. "Hmm? Oh, sure. Yes, bring me a mouse," she said, pleased he had offered to bring her something.
