The newleaf breeze was a welcome change from the cold of leafbare. Swandive had been excited to go on another patrol. It was simply too nice out to sit around in camp, but of course there was always prey that was needed or borders that needed checking, too.
One of the newer apprentices accompanied her today - not her own, and not one she was familiar with. That was alright, though, and Swandive was eager to get to know her younger clanmates.
"You're Featherpaw, right? I'm Swandive." She mewed, leading the way from camp.

Featherpaw It was a beautiful day outside now that new-leaf had truly arrived, and Featherpaw took a deep breath of the warm breeze, feeling her body fill with energy. She had been assigned to go on a patrol with a warrior named Swandive; she had seen her around camp before, but Featherpaw had yet to speak with her. A faint hope entertained itself in the back of her mind; with Willowwisp she hadn't been able to explore much of the territory yet, her mentor being so practical and to the point. Perhaps this she-cat would be a little more...flexible.
Featherpaw waved her tail as the fluffy white and gray warrior came to collect her, and the young cream-furred she-cat happily purred back; "RiverClan's one and only! I like your name by the way Swandive, I hope I get a cool name like that when I become a warrior." As the two made their way out of camp into the territory, Featherpaw trotted alongside Swandive, her gait bouncy and hopeful. "So, where are we going? The beech copse? The Gorge? The ThunderClan border? Ooh, maybe the old barn?" All of these places she had yet to see for herself, not for lack of trying. Why Perchstar didn't let apprentices go on walks by themselves she would never understand, and with so many eyes on her all the time it was hard to find chances to sneak out. One day though, if she could find the right moment...

"I think Perchstar chooses great names, honestly. I'm sure your eventual warrior name will be something that fits!" Swandive mewed. The apprentice seemed enthusiastic about exploring the territory, perhaps she just enjoyed exploring, or maybe her mentor hadn't yet covered everything. The mention of the border with Thunderclan made her nose wrinkle slightly, but it was nothing compared to the way she flinched at the mention of the barn. "The barn is dangerous territory. I think we'll stay away from that." Swandive couldn't stop the shiver than ran through her at the idea of it. Above all, it had to be the worst place in Riverclan territory.
"But if you haven't seen much of our borders yet, I think we can start there so long as you stick close. We're allies with Thunderclan, but that doesn't mean you can trust them. Windclan live on the opposite side of the gorge from us, I've never met one of their cats but I know we aren't allies. Not exactly hostile, I guess... And the gorge doesn't exactly allow for an easy way to cross the border without taking a long walk around it." The gorge, with high cliffs and the tumbling water over jagged rocks below, was not a place Swandive had spent much time.
"It's always good to check out the borders, though. Clan cats usually respect them. It's rogues that are the real threat, those not born to any clan. They have no code to follow and have no respect for good cats like us."

Featherpaw Featherpaw tilted her head, listening intently as Swandive explained in detail the reasons why the places she wanted to see so badly were dangerous. So what if they were a little risky, that's why she wanted to experience them! What kind of adventure would it be if you were safe the whole time? Featherpaw was quiet for a moment, walking alongside Swandive, before a barrage of words came tumbling from her jaws. "I mean, yeah, I want to see the borders, but why is everyone always so worried about if they'll see other clan cats or outsiders? They're cats just like us, right? Can't we just stop and talk to them for a while, I'm sure they would have amazing stories to share about their lives and their homes. Especially a rogue, can't you just imagine all the things they've seen in their life? If I ever meet a rogue, I'm going to ask them what the coolest thing they've ever seen is. Just because we were born in different places doesn't make me better than them, ya know?"
Featherpaw wasn't dumb, she knew that RiverClan and WindClan had been at war not long before she was born, and that everyone was always fighting about food or land or whatever. She hoped that she would never have to fight another cat over something as dumb as who owns that rock or stump, it just created so much anger and pain. She knew that the warrior would probably disagree with her, but she didn't care much. As long as they could still go on patrol and see the borders; hopefully she wouldn't make Swandive that angry.

Swandive wondered where her own sense of curiosity had gone. Dead, she thought, dead with Morningpaw and the morality of the filth who had killed her sibling. At Featherpaw's words, the warrior scoffed, tail lashing once behind her.
"Outsiders are conniving and care nothing for us or the code. The only thing they care for is chaos and putting other cats in danger for their own benefits and amusements." Swandive spat, "Clan cats are a little better, they mostly follow the same code we do, but still... Our recent war with Skyclan has shown they don't think much of the code either. The only clan you will ever be able to fully trust or rely upon is ours, best remember that."
"Rogues will say anything to convince you they are harmless and lack intent to cause trouble. It's one thing to talk with them... When their paws are not on Riverclan territory. Still, I would be careful if I ever ran across another one of their kind."

Featherpaw Featherpaw could tell that she and Swandive had very different views on cats outside RiverClan, and the apprentice began to think it might be better to just change the subject. This warrior was clearly very bitter, maybe something had happened in the past? It took all of Featherpaw's efforts to just bite her tongue and move on, but she managed to do it. "Okay Swandive, I'll remember that."
Determined to fill the dead air with more lively conversation, Featherpaw darted ahead a little bit and splashed her paws in a shallow creek while she purred to Swandive; "Hey, if you don't like the borders and stuff, what's another cool place to see in the territory? I want to know every tail-length of RiverClan before I become a warrior!"
"Good." Hopefully that remembrance would keep the apprentice safer than some of her clanmates had been.
"The beech copse is interesting, I suppose. Hunting land prey is important when the river is frozen over or is flooded. It's the one part of our territory that's truly wooded, which is... Strange, I'll admit. But it's an important part of the territory all the same." She mewed, "The view of the rest of the territory is nice, though." She mewed, paws turning toward the distant stand of trees visible across the pool-filled plains that were closer to camp.

Featherpaw Featherpaw followed Swandive's gaze towards the grove of trees in the distance, remembering how she and Elmpaw had first seen them when they'd snuck out of camp as kits. She'd never climbed a tree before, or hunted land prey. This could be a chance for her to try! "Ooo, sounds cool! I'll race you there!" Purring, Featherpaw kicked off with her back paws into a run, dashing around the pools and reeds of RiverClan territory on her way to their destination. She made sure not to get too far ahead though, she didn't want Perchstar to get on her case about 'leaving her escort behind'.
When Featherpaw skidded to a halt in the shade of the beech trees she took a moment to catch her breath, looking around at her surroundings. This certainly was a peaceful place, birds chirped in the trees and the budding leaves left patches of dappled shade on the ground. Once Swandive had also arrived, she looked over her shoulder at the warrior and meowed; "See that robin up there?" Pointing with her tail up at the trees above, the bird sat on a low branch just chattering away. A daring gleam flashed in the apprentice's eyes. "I'm gonna try and catch it." Before the warrior could say anything, Featherpaw dug her claws into the tree's trunk and began scaling the birch, trying not to slip on the smooth bark.
Before Swandive could get another word in, the apprentice had issues a challenge. Swandive took off after her, both in the interest of keeping Featherpaw close and because she couldn't just have an apprentice prove outrun her, of course. What sort of warrior would she be then?
Finally they stopped in the shade of the trees, and Swandive glanced up at the bird that had caught Featherpaw's eye. "Riverclan cats don't climb." She mewed, "I can't climb. Don't!" She hissed at Featherpaw, alarm making her fur spike. "Featherpaw! Get your tail down here now, or so help me."
