"Wake up!"

The words were a low hiss as Heatherfrost prodded the side of her denmate. Oatfluff hadn't been in the warrior's den long, she hadn't wanted to wait. Every since their exchange after his ceremony, the she-cat planned to put his skills to the test. Their relationship as apprentices had been tense on the best days. He was more meek in his approach to life, soft-hearted in ways that Heatherfrost found oddly unrespectable. What had started as a mere annoyance one day had sparked a sense of almost rivalry in her mind. It was hard to let go of things that she felt convicted on and this was one of them. How strong could Windclan be if not all of their warriors possessed an unyielding spirit?

Today she planned to find out just how much the warrior knew, and if he truly deserved his title. Also, to show how she had earned hers. The thought of him challenging her in return made her silken tail lash irritably. Impatiently, another paw poked Oatfluff again, "Come on, Oatfluff." After another aggravated admission, the pretty molly slid from their sheltered corner of Windclan's camp and headed towards the open moorlands. A faint glow perched on the edge of the horizon, slowly pressing away at the clinging night air. It was early, right after the dawn patrol had left. The brisk air was invigorating and caused her paced to quicken, although she managed to hold off on sprinting away for another moment.

When her clanmate caught up, Heatherfrost addressed him once more with a quick remark, "We're going to spar."

OATFLUFFare you going to age with grace?
he/him - t1 windclan warrior
Oatfluff blinked, the softness and warmth of his dreams tearing away as he was thrust into the waking world. A paw jabbed his side again, and he slowly registered it as the paw that had prodded him awake. And so early, too - he finally had a break from dawn patrol, usuallly quite the morning bird, and he had planned on finally getting a little extra sleep. Groggily, he lifted his head, his bleary eyes recognizing Heatherfrost standing over him. Oh, perfect, he thought bitterly, trying not to let his annoyance show. Just who I want to see at the crack of dawn. This should be interesting. What did she want?

The last time he'd seen her - at least, more than just in passing, a spare resentful glance or passing by her on his way out of camp - well, it hadn't been his proudest moment. He still regretted it. The anger in his paws, the itch of his claws begging for him to unsheathe them, the strange venom in his voice and the way the words had left his maw - it wasn't like him. He'd never felt like that before. Every day, he wanted to apologize, but he held back. Best not to make the situation worse. Because knowing Heatherfrost, she would make the situation worse.

So obediently, reluctantly, he got to his paws and followed. He wasn't sure where they were going, but his silence and lack of questioning spoke volumes. The morning air was brisk but refreshing, the birds singing at the first sign of light, finally back from their winter migration. Oatfluff almost felt calm - if the cat a few paces in front of him didn't make him so grumpy. It was such a strange, new feeling, and he still wanted to apologize. And he still wanted her apology. Not that he would ever get it, of course, but he would be ecstatic to put all of this behind them and just be Clanmates.

He blinked in surprise as she stopped suddenly, halting just beside her. What was all this about? The answer came, terse and cold, but it didn't answer his question any. "Spar? Heatherfrost, what is all this about?" Oatfluff asked, maybe a bit exasperated, fluffing his coat out uncomfortably.

The expanse of the flower field was filled with budding green foliage and bathed in the pale violet light of an early morning. Newleaf caused the moorlands to become more vibrant with each passing day, and stunning sight to take in when racing across the slopes. However, now, all the pale-furred molly focused on was the relentless itching of her claws. Heatherfrost had no desire to tear into the fur or flesh of her clanmate but rather sought to sate an endless quest to prove herself to any cat that challenged her ability. It wasn't insecurity that drove her, rather an inflated sense of self that she was determined to recognize even if her clan's leaders had failed to.

She turned to face the brown-pelted tom with narrowed blue eyes. Oatfluff appeared confused, his pelt fluffing out as if an homage to his warrior name. With a soft huff, she realized that maybe Tigerstar was at least perceptive in one way. The ceremony was still fresh in her mind. It wasn't anger that caused her fur to twitch, instead a quest to make sure that the clan was as strong as their weakest link. If a cloud-headed tom like Oatfluff could stand by her side in battle, Heatherfrost wanted to make sure that he could hold his own. Besides, the retort following her ceremony had been a welcome challenge. This was his time to prove himself.

"You're going to show me how you earned your name, and I'll show you how I earned mine." Her voice was a honeyed poison, an elegant and beautiful compliment to her coat. However, it was the intent behind them, and unquenchable drive that could have easily sent a chill down the spine of any cat. Heatherfrost's tail twitched impatiently as she slid into a defensive crouch and stared at her new denmate, "Go on then. Attack me. I'll even give you the first move."

OATFLUFFare you going to age with grace?
he/him - t2 windclan warrior
So this was why he'd been prodded so rudely awake. He supposed she had told him she would prove her name sometime - but why? Why prove herself to him, of all cats? Her ego was frankly irritating. Maybe he shouldn't have challenged her, but he was still miffed she dare try to bring him down on one of his proudest days. And when he hadn't even been sure he was ready to be a warrior, too. She'd struck a nerve, but try as he might, he wasn't too sure he wanted to put all that behind him now. Annoyance pricked at his paws, but he wouldn't let it bring a sneer to his face. It looked so ugly on her, after all. No, take a deep breath, Oat. Where's that kind and upbeat tom? Perhaps he'd left that cat at his warrior ceremony.

No. He shook his fur out again as though to shake himself free of his newfound negativity. He wouldn't stoop to her level and he certainly wouldn't let her ruin his spirit. After all, that burning desire and determination, to prove herself even to a cat she had apparently deemed unworthy, was not a look he ever wanted on his own face. Oatfluff swallowed hard and took a deep breath, almost as if letting go of all these StarClan-forsaken thoughts and feelings.

This was simple, after all: he didn't feel the need to prove himself, but if she wanted to fight so bad, he'd give her a fight. He knew his own worth and soon she would, too. Just because she didn't understand that choosing kindness was, in itself, its own strength...he gritted his teeth and forced his claws to sheathe themselves.

"How kind." The mottled tom meowed plainly, his fur a mess compared to her silken coat. They were the perfect dichotomy, standing across from each other - her, lean, elegant and egotistical, him stout, scruffy and humble. The nights since his ceremony spent wondering if she'd been right brought strength to his gaze, kept his expression even. Her drive didn't scare him - it was just pathetic. She could be a great Clanmate if she would only stop being such a narcissist. His brown gaze glimmered with pity as he got into a crouch, sizing her up. After a pause, he dipped his head respectfully. "I wish you well." Oatfluff meowed.

In her try at elegance, she had left her weight distributed unevenly on her paws, giving him the perfect opening. He kept his maw neutral and any of his usual cries of playful competition silent before he leapt. Muscular haunches, trained from his moons of dedicated patrolling as both apprentice and warrior, bunched underneath his weight, then straighened, launching him at his Clanmate. A grunt escaped his jaws as he bowled into her, knocking her down as his paws plowed into her shoulder and chest and left her off-kilter.

Oatfluff used Jumping Strike, dealing 8 damage (+3) and costing 7 SP!

Oatfluff
40 / 40 HP
93 / 100 SP (-7 SP)

Heatherfrost
