Poppyshine
It was odd, being at the lake now in a new place, but time continued to march forward. A lot of the clan was sick, which meant that it would be difficult to find cats to mentor the kits that were coming of age. She couldn’t deny a kit the opportunity to continue onward to being an apprentice, and with tensions growing between RiverClan and SkyClan, they could use all the fighting paws they could…Poppyshine just hoped it would not have to come to that.
There was no Willow Branch to get onto, but Poppyshine found a raised rock near RiverClan’s space of rest and she climbed up to announce, “Let all RiverClan cats old enough to catch their own fish gather for a Clan meeting!” The “RiverClan” part was likely unnecessary, and all the cats were gathered so close anyway, but given how many clans were living in proximity to one another, she wanted to make it clear.
While the healthy cats were gathering themselves and pausing in their duties to see what Poppyshine had to speak about, she looked around for the kit in question that would be rising in ranks.
Spiderkit hadn't seen many apprentice ceremonies back in their old camp, and she just barely remembered most of them. Nonetheless, there was a bubbling feeling of excitement rising in her stomach as she heard the call ring out. Poppyshine's voice didn't seem to convey any fear of danger or discomfort, so she assumed that this was a ceremony of some sort. It was a little boisterous to assume it was her own, but the kit did so anyway. She heeded the call quickly, calling out to her mother who followed behind her with a soft smile. The queen was ill but was able to make it to a meeting, especially sensing how excited her daughter was.
The deputy's words hung in her mind for a minute. She was old enough to catch her own fish. And hopefully, she would be able to any day now, in the lake they had set up around. Her bright eyes gazed up at Poppyshine on the rock, her paw bouncing in excitement. The joy and sense of adventure exuding from the kit was nearly palpable. She glanced around her surroundings as the other cats followed suit in gathering around the rock. She took in a deep breath, preparing herself for whatever words would come next. If this really was her apprentice ceremony, it would definitely be the best day of her life so far. If not, she would be far from a little disappointed.

Poppyshine saw Spiderkit scamper up, and Poppyshine met her gaze and smiled to confirm that yes, this was indeed her ceremony. When Spiderkit was seated at the front and ready, Poppyshine began.
“Spiderkit, you have reached the age of six moons. It is now time for you to be apprenticed.” Poppyshine kept a warm smile on her face, but she once again wished that this new apprentice could have a normal apprenticeship, instead of being stuck in this strange land…Perhaps one day they could return to the land they called home and she could see her true place of origin. “From this day forward, until you receive your warrior name, you shall be known as Spiderpaw.”
She lifted her chin and gazed out at the gathered cats. Many were sick, and so her choices for mentors for Spiderpaw were limited, but she had decided upon someone who she hoped would be a good fit. She had seen him working swiftly around camp since they arrived at the lake, and while she had not spent much time with him herself, she was confident that he would be a worthy mentor to their new apprentice.
“Your mentor shall be Larkspring, whose determination will show you the best way to grow into your role s a warrior.” Poppyshine stepped down from the raised rock and moved to the side so the new mentor could greet his apprentice, and she joined in the celebration of Spiderpaw’s new name.
Larkspring joined the ceremony when Poppyshine called for the clan, though his fur puffed a little at the end of his tail in irritation that he would have to pause in his duties to watch some new runt get their name. He took a breath and the little voice in his head that he was trying to develop told him that that was rude to think. He guessed. It’s just that he would rather be hunting, or gathering herbs, or just looking after Cindersky and Rookflight to make sure that they were okay. He hated seeing either of them so sick.
And then Poppyshine called out him to be the new apprentice’s mentor. Larkspring’s eyes widened and he was so surprised that he almost didn’t move at all. He only got up when Poppyshine got down from the rock and he moved through the small crowd of cats to get to Spiderpaw. He looked down at her, remembering their less-than-stellar interaction just a couple of weeks ago. Perhaps she’ll be a good apprentice now that she is a bit older…Larkspring never liked kits after all.
He leaned down and touched noses with her. “We will begin straight away,” he told her. “There is a lot to be done here. Have your celebrations and then we’ll go. Just be quick.”

As the molly gazed up at Poppyshine, she realized that this was, in fact, her ceremony. The deputy's knowing smile told her all she needed to know. She looked back at her mother again, a large grin occupying her face. She could hardly wait to hear who her mentor would be, to hear her clanmates call out to her as Spiderpaw. She listened intently, holding her head a little higher than usual. This was really it. The words sounded just as she had hoped, and it felt so gratifying to finally be acknowledged after moons of waiting. It took a moment for the reality to set in as she realized who her new mentor was. The name sounded familiar, and one quick look at him confirmed her suspicion. She could barely suppress an eye-roll.
It wasn't Poppyshine's fault, but she huffed out a slight sigh of annoyance. Really? Larkspriing had been so bossy. And now his whole job was to boss her around. I'm sure he'll enjoy that. she thought to herself. But she was determined to let nothing stop this triumphant moment. She was going to prove herself as the greatest warrior ever, and no grumpy mentor could dissuade her from that. She smiled at him as he approached, hoping he would be a bit kinder. She touched her nose to his and dipped her head into a small nod. She turned back towards her mother, shooting her another large grin her way, and bounded up to her for a moment. After she and her mother shared a few words, she was heralded back to a den to rest. That left Spiderpaw to turn right back around, trotting up to Larkspring. "I'm ready." she affirmed.
