Nightdancer's injuries had been feeling better since arriving at the lake, probably because she hadn't been straining them as much now that they weren't traveling long distances through harsh weather every day. Though she'd kept the light cough and occasional sneezing that had started near the tail-end of their journey, something she was still choosing to blame on the storm even as the weather remained relatively clear now that they'd reached their destination.

Well. It wasn't too bad, so it wasn't going to keep her from her duties: as a warrior, she had a responsibility to her Clan; and today that manifested in a hunting patrol. She swiftly took the lead, pleased to find that prey was running much better here than it had been in the forest. If they were forced to be so far from home, at least they wouldn't starve.

"Fan out so we don't scare off the prey, but don't go far," she instructed. "If you run into trouble, call for help--and if you hear a call for help, follow it immediately."

With her orders given, the patrol leader slowly diverged from the rest of her Clanmates; pausing briefly to cough again and then searching for prey. How long had it been since she'd tasted a juicy, fresh-caught squirrel? How many of her Clanmates felt the same? The sick, those who couldn't hunt at the moment, deserved fresh prey too.

That motivation led her to slowly creep toward a tree, following one at a distance, and pouncing as it prepared to scramble up the tree and into its nest; catching it easily between her paws and killing it quickly.

Larkpaw followed Nightdancer, listening to the instructions without saying a word. Seeing that the oatrol was beginning to split up, the apprentice too left to find some prey of her own. Curlyfluff had yet to teach her anything useful; she relied on Firefly, Sweetpaw and watching other warriors and apprentices to learn. Thankfully she had the chance to see many warriors in action on the journey, and got plenty of practice in as well. She scented the air, and tasted the familair scent if squirrel. Perfect. She caught it easily, and brought the fresh-kill proudly to the rest of the patrol.

Following Nightdancer, Sweetpaw itched to explore the new area and the new terrain. Her fluffy tail swished impatiently back and forth as she listened to the warrior's words. She'd stay as close as she wanted, why put a limit on where they could go? There was just so much to explore around here, she couldn't possibly wait.

Having veered away from her sister and the others, the she-cat's ears swiveled back and forth as she caught the sound of prey rustling nearby. Trying her best to hold in a cough that had been itching in her throat, she crouched down and crept up on an unsuspecting squirrel. Creeping forward, she couldn't wait any longer and bunching up her legs she used all her might to pounce onto the bushy-tailed prey. Unfortunately, she'd been too impatient and the rodent scurried away into some brush before she was able to race after it. Huffing a bit and letting out the cough that had been dying to release itself from her lungs, she stood up and gave her pelt a furious shake. "Foxdung!" she yowled, slashing angrily at the ground with a paw.

Sweetpaw attempted to catch a squirrel, costing -5 SP. She was unsuccessful.

The sound of a distant shout reached Nightdancer's ears--but it was simply a sound of frustration and not a call for help, so she brushed it off after a few moments and returned to her hunt. To see prey running at all was a change of pace she'd missed, and the thrill of the hunt and a well-placed pounce were both things she was happy to engage with once again.

Another squirrel quickly caught her attention, one that was larger than the last, and her whiskers twitched as she slowly crept forward. Her timing was perfect as she leapt, pinning it easily with strong paws and killing it before it had a chance to escape.

It was just one more success. Even when she wasn't feeling her absolute best, she could take pride in her skill.

Yes, mildly sick she was—but Fawnshine was far from being crippled. With plenty of their warriors, their deputy, and even Mottlestar having fallen ill; she figured she could at least be of help somehow to her clan. Through lessons long learned the hard way, an extra paw of help would always be appreciated rather than not. And so, follow Nightdancer she did, gracefully moving amidst the warriors and apprentices despite the faint sickness distracting her mind.

Spotting the fleeting shadow of prey desperately trying to scurry away on its hind feet, Fawnshine was swift to chase after the little creature. Stalking downwind to avoid being scented, she crept slowly—before pouncing down on with surprisingly accurate poise. With the mouse captured between her teeth, she brought her catch back to the hunting patrol.

Fawnshine attempted to catch a Rodent, using 3 (+20 from sickness debuff) SP. It was a Success!

Nightdancer slowly crept forward, toward a third unsuspecting squirrel. One more catch and she'd be set; so long as the rest of them weren't having too much trouble, they'd be able to return to their Clanmates with their prizes before long.

Even like this, with coughs and the occasional sneeze interrupting her attempts, hunting was second nature to her: fall into position, move slowly, keep your eyes on the prey. Keep your distance, know when to fall back, and know when to pounce.

Those skills served her well, leading her to gather her catches together and call out to the others:

"I think I'm finished for the moment! This is enough for me to carry back."
