The trip thus far has been exhausting; perhaps doubled by the litter of kits she had to help through the journey. She wished that this could have happened a little later, when her kits were older, more responsible…but tragedy waits for no one, she knew. Thankfully she had her family to help. Forestbreeze was a great father, Silver a great brother, and even his strange friend Hawkpaw, all helped the kits, so she was hardly alone in taking care of them. She even had the chance to take breaks, like now, as she walked around the makeshift “camp” the clans all made together to rest after a long day of travel.
Pineblossom was not intending to stop and talk with anyone, but a familiar bi-colored pelt caught her gaze. She had not had the chance to speak with Darkspirit since before he was named deputy. It was clear based on the past few gatherings that that was no longer the case. She wondered what happened…but the politics of another clan was not her business, nor did she assume he would want to share. Still, she enjoyed their talk before, and hoped he would not be unwelcome to another.
“If you’re tired, I don’t need to keep you company, but I was hoping I could rest with you a short while,” Pineblossom meowed in greeting as she joined him where he sat. “We have not spoken in quite some time. It seems we can only talk once every several moons. How have you been?”

Darkspirit stayed on the very outskirts of the group. He hadn't said anything to anyone the entire time they had been traveling. If anyone of authority gave him any orders, he simply nodded and slinked off. Sometimes he worked, sometimes he just stayed away long enough that everyone forgot that they told him to do anything. He didn't care. His mind was numb when it wasn't full of rage. Moons upon moons of self isolation had done nothing to temper his foul moods and sour outlook on the world. Yet he did nothing to try to make contact with anyone.
He nearly went into culture shock when someone outside of Thunderclan approached him and spoke, let alone something that wasn't an order. He stared as Pineblossom sat by him, suddenly at a loss of how to communicate. It wasn't until she asked her question that his eyes darkened and his mood was once again soured. His ears slid back ever so slightly and his nose crinkled just a bit.
"Out-foxing-standing." He growled, his voice sounding odd and out of place to him now. It wasn't her fault, but his default emotion was cranky these days. "Mottlestar demoted me for executing an evil force in our ranks, even though she told me she'd give me that order anyway. Stars forbid anyone does anything before she says so. Pile of foxing rat dung she is." He spat away from Pineblossom and his tail lashed so swiftly it thumped against the ground. He was beyond giving a rats tail about what he said, who heard or what would happen as a consequence.
Let death take him for all he cared. Let the whole clan be taken by death even. It mattered to him, not.

Darkspirit’s seething response came as a surprise to her. The last time she had encountered his anger, it had been a similar growling nature, but not quite as vitriolic. His words seemed to drip venom as he spoke of Mottlestar. It startled her to hear a warrior speak so openly against their leader, but she forced any surprise off her face. It was not as though she had never disagreed with her own leader; she made her problems known to Nightstar before he lost his title.
“Leaders can be rather shortsighted sometimes,” she agreed. “That sounds like a frustrating way to lose a title. You can at least take peace in knowing that you rid your clan of evil, and made them safe in the process. Still, I’m sorry that had to happen.” She looked at him. “And what about following all of that? I know it has been a few moons since I saw you in the deputy spot.”
