Recruitment! Fall in line!

Sprucebark sat in camp tail flicking as he looked disappointedly at the sad state of the Fresh kill pile or more so, what remained of it. It was hardly worthy of being called a pile. This was so not going well, this combined with their limited water was going to be a real problem soon if not addressed. He had not found any new water source and it likely wouldn't happen without some divine intervention from the stars up above.

The orderly and rule following tom was always one to have a lot of faith in starclan but it was waning now just as the strength of their clan was. It was not easy to remain optimistic of what the future could hold now. However, he forced his head up not wanting to discourage any of his clanmates, he was a long time serving warrior and it was only proper that he should act it.

The timely fellow let out a sigh as the realization dawned on him that even though his schedule had not included any hunting today that he would need to organize one if the elders were to be fed tonight. Which of course, for the rule following tom was a must.

Going over towards the apprentice den he decided it was high time that they be involved as well, the clan was in dire straights and it was needing all paws on overtime if they would get though this... the worst part? It was not even full on leaf bear yet.


"Swanpaw, Scorchpaw" he meowed orderly the same way a teacher, or coach might call upon you.

"Look alive, we have work to do: I know your schedules didnt have on it a hunt but we need what we can get. Both of you, with me"

Of all my characters, Sprucebark is the least worried about coming across as bossy, if he needed to get others in gear to keep the code and rules in place of getting clanmates fed then that is what he would do. It mattered little to him if he was not either of their mentors, appretnices job included keeping the elders fed and that was that. Rules were rules after all.

"remember the waters are tainted with poison so fish are not an option. It's a good time for you to work on your land based prey

With a flick of his tail he led the way out of camp.


Special condition* Fish are not allowed to be hunted this trip. (ok well they are your characters so I guess I can't stop you ... but spruce will yell at you if you pick to target a fish in your hunting rolls )

Swanpaw, though she had been cat-napping, was easy to rouse at the call of one of the older warriors. Sprucebark wanted to go on a hunting patrol, it seemed, and the pale-furred apprentice was quick to pad over to him. She had not been faring particularly well when it came to hunting recently with prey as scarce as it was, and the competitive apprentice was not at all happy about it. Not when the clan who had taken her in was starving and in need of food.

"Let's go." She mewed, pacing anxiously. Blue eyes shifted from Scorchpaw to the older warrior, gleaming with sudden impatience.

She was planning to spend her day at the apprentice den, but suddenly her thoughts were interrupted. A warrior, Sprucebark to be exact, called her. She frantically padded towards them, but then smiled.

"I-I'm ready! Let's go!"

she mewed, trying to seem more time-oriented than she was. She was just stretching her paws and back, minding her own business in the den when she heard Sprucebark call her. She straightened her shoulder and position, ruffling her fur and fluffing it up, then nodding as a signal to Mime, 'Let's go!' She made sure to skid across the clearing towards them fastly, and her fiery pelt shone in the sunlight. It may have been leaf-fall, but she was feeling... good.

Sprucebark grinned a bit seeing the enthusiasm that the apprentices took to the challenge being asked of them. He was very pleased that both of them were seemingly eager to help and ready to go even on a short moments notice.

Scorchpaw seemed to be extra full of energy today just like she usually was and that made him happy.  They had to have some amount of positive energy, otherwise the current situation was just too bleak without it.


"Great!  Love the enthusiasm! Let's spread out a bit so we are not tripping over one another, but stay close enough in case you are to run into any trouble" he meowed and with that, they were off!


Once out of camp sprucebark glanced around the mostly quiet lands of riverclan.  It felt odd to him not to be headed just to the river since the fish were off limits but he had been wanting to work on his land hunting anyways so the silver lining was there although slim.

He stalked low to the ground ears on a constant swivel hoping to pick up anything at all out here.

He grinned a bit hearing a frog's call near-ish to his position and quickly after spotted it.  It must be out of the water to avoid the icky stuff he thought quietly to himself, hmm hopefully it had not been ickyfied from the recent river poision.  But it should still be safer than the fish.


He stalked towards it and held his breath as he noticed the frog had turned and was looking right at him.

He didnt have time to get any closer, he leapt at it and the chase was on!

A little weasel popped out of nowhere and struck at sprucebark!

In the chaos the frog has gotten away!

Scorchpaw was quick to attack. She raced towards the weasel and struck it with her unsheathed claw in an attempt to help Spruce in his pursuit against the weasel. She had been minding her own business, crouching until she heard his cry of pain. She was quick to join the conflict between him and the weasel. After striking the weasel, she turned backwards, making sure not to get scratched. "Are you okay?" She mewed to Sprucebark, her enthusiasm still glinting in her eyes, but she shared a worried look in them too. Would this bad luck trudge after her forever? She didn't think much of it; she didn't think much of anything. That was the dumb, caring, enthusiastic fuzzball she was.

Swanpaw was happy to head off in search of prey, determined to bring back something for the clan, even if they couldn't fish. Sprucebark's yelp of pain and the sounds of a struggle brought the apprentice immediately back to her clanmate's side, fur bristling.

"Of course... Another one of these stupid things." Swanpaw huffed, a growl rumbling in her chest as she struck at the weasel with unsheathed claws. She had been looking forward to bringing back prey, but she would settle for killing another dumb beast just as well.

Sprucebark was suprised how quickly the apprentices swarmed and took out the beast.  He watched as Swanpaw gave the final blow to it and it fell limp at all their paws.  Well... that was one way to feed the clan he guessed.  Predators didnt really taste good but in times like these could take as takes can, they couldnt exactly afford to be picky now.



With a sigh he shook his pelt from the mess it now was.  "Thank you, both of you.
he glanced at Scorchpaw with a grin and nodded,  she always had that happy energy which he appreciated, "and yes, I will be fine, thanks for asking"

His ears perked a bit curious about Swanpaw's comment, so that was not her first encounter with these, it seemed predators were more common these days, was that what was causing the lack of prey? he wondered quietly to himself.


Hiding the weasel for now so as not to attract any other unwanted attention his focus slowly shifted back to the hunt.

Sniffing a bit at the air he smelled a mouse nearby.  When it moved a bit it gave away itself and he moved in for the kill.


HONK HONKKK

the mouse was startled by the racket and dipped back to safty getting away.

The hairs along sprucebark's spine stood on end, he had heard that bird call before, attacked by these miserably geese several times.

He rolled his eyes as one of them charged right at him now,

oh... of course he sighed to himself and dug his claws into the ground in preparation.

the goose attacked pecking at the cat as it honked its annoying honk

No sooner had the weasel fallen, than an angry series of honks sounded... Geese. Always geese. They were a plague on Riverclan's territory, it seemed. Swanpaw whirled with unsheathed claws, bounding forward to rake them across the giant bird's feathers with a growl. This was supposed to be a hunting patrol, but some impromptu battle training certainly didn't hurt.
