pixel-hourglass-f2u-by-lost-in-ashes-dd0zotaBirdstar

The burning light of the distant, rising sun caught in the small puffs of air that rose from Birdstar's muzzle, casting faint golden light through the billows. Early morning was cold now-- normally her preferred weather, but Birdstar found it uncomfortable now. Whether her fur had thinned to allow the chill to bother her, or the sharp decrease in prey had slowed the warming drum of her heart... she wasn't sure which was the cause. Likely, she reasoned, both were to blame to some extent. Whatever the case, the feeling of frosted dew beneath her pads made Birdstar grimace, and the bite in the air felt aimed particularly for the flesh beneath her coat. A shiver ran through her, from the point of her nose through to the quivering end of her tail.

There was some consolation in having company for this walk, both to stave off the worsening of her already fickle mood and to balance the dread of what they walked toward. Birdstar's gaze slid away from the path ahead, shifting to look over Wolfblossom beside her instead. Her sister hadn't been spared from the weary hunger, and it showed in her duller coat, the heavier tread to her steps. Birdstar watched her for a little while, studying the lines of her face, the scores of soft, angry skin dug through the pale fur of her shoulders, before turning away with a gentle sigh. The ache in her chest was indistinguishable from the persistent pang in her stomach.

We will not starve, she assured herself silently as they neared the river. Birdstar would not let her Clan fall to ruin so long as she possessed the power to stop it, and she trusted Perchstar to grant them support-- however much she begrudged needing it --as both an ally and a friend. But then again...

Birdstar raised her head, ears turning towards the rising gurgle of the river. Before long, they cleared the underbrush and the cut of water came into view: dark, clogged, thicker than it ought to be. The stench of rot clung faintly to the mist rolling across the riverbed. RiverClan were dealing with their own lack of prey, an obvious assessment from the Gathering and from the recent decay of their border. In their position... Birdstar would decline the offer. Keeping her own Clanmates' bellies full was far more of a priority than those of another Clan, no matter how friendly the terms they stood on were. Even if they fared better than Birdstar assumed and Perchstar did extend their land to them, there was always--

Dread was coiling heavy in her gut, but Birdstar pushed it aside with a heavy snort and raised her chin to stare across the river with tired eyes. Whatever worries or reservations she held now, she had asked Perchstar to meet her with Poppyshine, and she held no doubt they would arrive soon. She would only worry over the unfortunate circumstances if they came to pass.

The chill in the air grew more unmistakable with each passing day, and each passing day it was as hard to ignore as the hunger pangs gnawing at her. Wolfblossom padded at her sister's side, paws heavy on the dew-frosted ground, the weariness in her expression underscored with worry. They should not have had to come begging at all, but the simple fact was that Skyclan's territory was hardly capable of sustaining them. Riverclan did seem to be having their own problems, if the odd scent that drifted from the river and their own lean warriors at the last gathering was any indication, but Wolfblossom was more concerned with her own clanmates. The rest of the forest's evident problems were unfortunate, but the deputy would do everything she could to make sure Skyclan survived the cold moons ahead. The forest starving this early in the season was not a promising sign.

A heavy frown had settled onto her face at the sight of the river, a low sigh escaping her. She had told Sunfire that Riverclan could likely spare the territory they didn't fish on, and that would have been true a moon ago, but a matter of days seemed to have changed that. The worst Riverclan could say was no, of course... And that was not something Skyclan could afford. Unease made her stomach churn, but Wolfblossom pushed it away. They would deal with that bridge if they got to it, she supposed. Silently, the deputy leaned against Birdstar's flank in support.

With another shake of her head, Wolfblossom's expression settled onto something more neutral as she gazed across the river, blue eyes searching for Riverclan's leadership.

When the news came from the border that SkyClan's leadership were seeking an audience, Perchstar could feel nothing but a vague emptiness in her chest. Perhaps she ought to have dreaded the appearance of Birdstar in such lean times, when speaking with another leader more likely meant harm than good. Perhaps she ought to have felt more warmly, given the many times she had strolled the river hoping vainly to see a pair of green eyes on the other side and hear a wry joke or two. However, the warring of feelings that should have existed left nothing but a hole, a void, which could be filled by anything it came across.

Or maybe, that hollow feeling was just hunger.

Perchstar rose to her feet from where she had been lying in her den. To conserve strength, she would sit or lie down whenever she was not actively going somewhere. She still had apprentices to train, hunting patrols to join, and many cats to speak to about various issues. But when she spoke or when she thought, there was no need to stand and put on some semblance of strength that all her Clanmates knew she didn't have. When was the last time she had eaten again? She was unsure whether it had been two days ago now or three. With such little prey, she had gone back to her old habits of eating as little as possible. But now, it was for a good reason. She had lives to spare, if necessary. Her Clanmates did not. She was not breaking her promise to Poppyshine and Stormdance. After all, taking care of her own needs did not apply when the needs of the rest of the Clan were so great.

With a brief nod, the leader collected Poppyshine and they went off through the territory. The all-too-familiar stench of whatever was corrupting the river's waters rose high over the other scents of early morning frost, of cold apricity, of crackling reeds resting in frigid mud. Her eyes caught on the bloated corpse of a fish, floating lazily down the stream, and all of a sudden she had to suppress the urge to retch as an image of Cloverheart flashed before her eyes. That had been so long ago. Dead fish were not the same as the waterlogged carcass of her friend. The culprit was gone and SkyClan were now her allies. And yet... and yet.

Perchstar managed to distract herself with the sight of a small puddle of dew, untainted by the river's poison. She waved to Poppyshine with her tail, then stooped low, taking quick and deep sips. The sensation of evening-chilled water soothing her parched throat made a shudder run down her spine. She could have drunk the entire small pool's worth, and then three more just like it. But she stepped back after just a few laps and allowed Poppyshine her turn. It was important to ration even as small of a water source as this. The sensation of swallowing had awakened her hunger, but she bit it back and waited with patient, untrembling limbs. She would not allow herself to appear weak before Birdstar, no matter how inclined she was to trust the SkyClan leader. It was simply not in her blood.

Once the deputy had finished, the two continued their short walk to the border. Perchstar had been avoiding the river as much as possible, so it felt strange to go right up to it now. Her throat twisted at the sight of the thick, unwatery fluid, coursing down the streambed that had been the source of life for her Clan for untold generations. What could this be, but punishment from the stars? Poppyshine's patrol had found nothing as of yet... All she could hope was that this would pass soon. If it didn't... she didn't want to think about what would happen.

There, just across the sluggish river, Birdstar and Wolfblossom both waited. Perchstar offered a respectful dip of her head to them. She couldn't help but notice, as she had before, that both normally-stocky and muscular she-cats seemed somehow diminished. Hunger recognized hunger. The leanness to their face, the sunkenness so desperately trying to be hidden from their eyes, was evident. Perchstar felt an unpleasant suspicion that she already knew what this conversation was going to be about. Yet surely, Birdstar would not ask, seeing the evidence of RiverClan's own starvation right before her eyes. Perhaps it was an unrelated matter. ...They would see. "Good morning, Birdstar, Wolfblossom." Perchstar was infinitely thankful for the small drink of water, which had taken the dry rasp from her voice if only temporarily. "What brings you here?" There was little point in the formality of asking how they had been. One glance made it all too obvious.

Poppyshine

Hunger tore into RiverClan with each passing day. The normally-bountiful river was nothing more than a sludge-filled pit at this point, occasionally putting dead fish on display to sicken the cats who passed by its edge. The rare pools of rainwater and dew were all RiverClan had to quell their thirst. To think that RiverClan of all clans would be the ones struggling so terribly with water…it felt like a cruel joke, if it had any humor residing in it at all. Poppyshine was only grateful that they had such few kits, because that meant most of the clan could hunt for food and there were few lives who were at risk due to their young age.

Poppyshine walked alongside Perchstar and quietly thanked her when she offered the second half of the tiny water pool. She lapped up the last of the water and it moistened her dry tongue enough that she could swallow with more ease instead of feeling as though sand had coated the inside of it. Poppyshine always did her best to remain upbeat, but she did allow herself a little reprieve from it around Perchstar. They knew every side of each other, which meant that Poppyshine didn’t have to remain naively optimistic around her. They both understood the gravity of the situation their clan was in. She wondered what SkyClan wanted to speak about. If it was the obvious that she suspected, the need for assistance with food, she felt guilt and dismay clawing in her gut; they simply could not spare to be kind, as much as she liked the SkyClan high ranks. It was a miracle already that they hadn’t grown too close to complete starvation yet, as RiverClan’s territory naturally didn’t have much land prey because of the plentiful fish in the river. The source of their food was basically cut down to a third, or perhaps less. He hoped they would not get desperate enough to risk eating the clearly-diseased fish of the river.

When they arrived and Poppyshine spotted Birdstar and Wolfblossom, she gave them her usual smile. Her body was thinned and even she could not quite hide the fatigue that clung to her like water in fur after a heavy rain, but she would still be polite and bright to their fellow allies.

“It is good to see you both,” Poppyshine added with a slow blink of friendship towards the SkyClanners. She sat beside Perchstar and awaited their answer about the nature of the meeting. The SkyClanners’ weight loss was obvious to her eyes too and her heart pained knowing that their huge clan was likely feeling equal detrimental effects of the forest’s plight.

pixel-hourglass-f2u-by-lost-in-ashes-dd0zotaBirdstar

The press of Wolfblossom against her side was a welcome one, and Birdstar dipped her head in silent, appreciative acknowledgment. Though the support was welcome, she stepped away when the RiverClanners emerged from the depths of their territory, moving closer to the bank and standing taller. The same hollowness she'd seen at the Gathering, the same that she felt present in herself and her own Clanmates, was reflected in their faces. RiverClan cats had always been sleek, but they seemed especially slim now, and their coats lacked the characteristic luster. Birdstar's gut folded in on itself, knowing already the answer to her request. She was tempted to claim she had nothing important to say after all, and had only wanted to impart well wishes, just to avoid suffering such vulnerable need. But with one look to Wolfblossom, she set her jaw tightly and caught her will.

Turning back to the cats across the river, she mewed, "Perchstar. Poppyshine," nodding to them in turn. Then her attention settled squarely on her fellow leader. Birdstar drew in a breath and forced herself to just speak. "Something has changed... like the earth itself is sick. The prey has all but disappeared from SkyClan's forest because of it." Her tail swept slowly behind her, a sign of her discomfort. She found herself staring at the slope of Perchstar's muzzle rather than properly looking her in the eyes as she went on. "Understand we would not ask this of you if our other options weren't exhausted." She knew both cats did; she was only stalling before allowing the sour question to leave her mouth.

"Perchstar, Poppyshine-- our woods are empty. The plentiful green-leaf we enjoyed is gone, and SkyClan is threatened by its own weight." Birdstar looked away from Perchstar's nose, turning her head to instead search Poppyshine's familiar, startlingly dull green eyes before returning properly to her leader's. "We'd like to request permission to share your land-- the small wood you have? SkyClan would give you anything we can in return for your favor." Birdstar picked her chin up, holding herself aloft against the hot shame coiling in her gut. "We--" she fumbled, near to reassuring the RiverClanner's she had no expectation of their agreeing when she belatedly decided she shouldn't put a rejection in their head if one had not already come, "...appreciate your time, regardless. And wish you and all your Clan... better, than as is."

The sound of pawsteps heralded the approach of the Riverclanners, and Wolfblossom gave a short nod to Perchstar and Poppyshine. Their pelts were dull and thinning, Poppyshine's gaze lacked the usual cheer, and it was easy to see why, if the last gathering hadn't been enough proof. More concerning to Wolfblossom however, was her own clanmates, similarly starved and exhausted. Her friends, her family... Her grandkits, though they weren't exactly kits anymore. All at risk as the forest crumbled from the weight of the clan it was beholden to support.

Wolfblossom let Birdstar take the lead, her gaze settling on the two Riverclanners before her. She doubted that this request would go over well, even with their alliance, but Birdstar was right. They had to ask, there was no other option. The possibility that they would agree seemed as slim a chance as Wolfblossom catching a rabbit... But the worst that could be said was no, right?
