The first thing Leopardstar noticed was that it was quiet. It was usually quiet in this part of the territory, as ShadowClan veered away from the Carrionplace in their day to day lives, but when she searched around the outskirts there was usually the telltale sound of something. Chittering rats, rustling reeds.

Some sign of life.

But there was nothing now, and the absence of it was deafening. They weren't quite there yet, approaching the edge, but she couldn't shake the sinking feeling that something was wrong. The wind that blew over the marsh was harsh and cold, as if to accentuate the atmosphere.

"Badgermask," she whispered. "Do you hear anything?"

It had been a surprise that Leopardstar had asked for her company - their relationship was barely mended. Yes, Badgermask had risked her life to save her mother but she hadn't fully settled on how she felt about her - but she was at least willing to speak with her Clanmates even if it was in short bursts. But she wasn't one to turn down a job, no matter her complicated feelings so she had accepted and dutifully padded after her mother.

Her ears were perked, fur prickling as she also got the sense that something was off - before glancing over at her mother as the leader murmured a question to her. She could only shake her head, eyes narrowing as she scanned the area around them. It wasn't just quiet...It was dead silent - not even the faint sound of rats rustling the piles for food. ...It was like even the wind was holding its breath. "I don't like this," she spoke, a faint hiss in her throat as she pinned her ears back. "This feels wrong."

Leopardstar had intended to search for Nightstalker as well, but the heavy rains that plagued the forest had washed away any trace of blood and any scent-trail they could have followed long before they had set out; a situation which didn't exactly inspire confidence as she took several cautious steps forward.

"On your guard," she instructed, feeling somewhat awkward. She had hardly spoken to Badgermask, something that felt like an oversight in the aftermath of the attack. She had kept herself apart from her kin for their safety--and yet, by doing just that, she had failed them once more. Still, Badgermask was a trustworthy warrior and perfectly capable of holding her own in a fight, which made her an excellent choice for this specific mission.

They kept to the darkest shadows as they approached, and at last entered one of the most dangerous places on all of ShadowClan land.

In all Leopardstar's life, she had never seen it so barren.

"It's..." Leopardstar blinked. "It's empty."

There had been no signs of life because there was nothing left--

And suddenly, the attack made sense.

The carrion that gave it its name, ShadowClan's most dangerous resource, was gone. With nothing to scavenge, the rats had scattered; and they had attacked ShadowClan, who had kept a dwindling fresh-kill pile.

"They must have attacked because there was nothing left for them. We had food."

Not much food, but that didn't matter to the scavengers--they would take anything they could get their paws on.

"We should search the area quickly. I don't want us to get ambushed again."

Badgermask was not prepared for the sight - or in truth, the lack of sight - as she followed her mother into the Carrionplace. She had only been here a pawful of times but never once did she imagine that the piles of rot and scraps would be gone. "But...How?" she questioned sharply, disbelief clear in her throat as she took a step forward to sweep her gaze across the area.

Her fur prickled, baring her teeth. It didn't make sense - as dangerous as this place was, there had always been a comfort in knowing that if they could brave the risks - as rotten as the food was, you could find food here or get lucky and catch rats - there would always be something even in the harsh leafbares. It had been this way as long as anybody knew - so how could things just...? She didn't even know where the carrion came from so where in StarClan's name could it have gone?!?

She took in a deep breath to collect herself, forcing down the uncertainty and concern - this was not the time for it. Leopardstar was right, they had to be quick. She was chosen for a reason, she wouldn't let things distract her. Giving a nod of her head, she quickly turned and padded away - keeping a steady pace as she circled the edge of the carrionplace for any sign of what had happened. There was no doubt in her mind that something unnatural had transpired - this was not done at the teeth of the rats or the paws of any cats, there had simply been to much carrion to ever truly go empty... So what could have done this...?
