Sootstorm slipped into the apprentice's den. Once, he would have struggled to find his apprentice's coat amongst the swarm of apprentices, but there was so little apprentices now that Finchpaw's dappled coat was as obvious as a poppy in a field of daisies. The dappled tom nudged the she-cat awake, whispering a few gentle words in her ear then slipping back out of the den. Once Finchpaw had woken up properly and joined him outside, he led the way out of camp.

"Today, we'll go through hunting. In Windclan, there's next to no undergrowth, so hunting is straight forward: you see a prey, and you chase after it. Now think: what do we do if our prey is faster than us?" Sootstorm began, sitting down and resting his tail on his paws. Finchpaw was smart-- surely, she could get some idea of what to do.

Finchpaw awoke to Sootstorm's voice next to her. It took a few heartbeats for her to realize that she was no longer in the nursery, curled up with Nectarflower, Mosskit, Eveningkit and Weaselkit, but in her very own nest in the apprentice's den. She shot up, energy buzzing through her whole body. She was an apprentice! And they were going for training!

Finchpaw trotted out of the den, ignoring the furious hisses of the other apprentices as she trod over their tails. Serves them right, sticking them out so far it was blocking her way to the entrance! Besides, it wasn't her fault. She was so used to there being no other kits in the nursery, and now there was other apprentices sharing a den with her. How disgusting! And to think that when she was a warrior she'd have to share the den with even more cats? Ugh. When she was leader, she'd make sure everyone had their own dens.

Finchpaw burst out of the den, and quickly rushed over to Sootstorm's side. However, before she could get a word in, the tom had already turned and was heading for the camp exit. Finchpaw's tail twitched with annoyance. Nectarflower would never have ignored her! She furiously raced after the older tom, determined to overtake him but falling behind as they walked further and further.

At last, when she was about to give up, Sootstorm stopped. Finchpaw quickly smoothed down her pelt. Great Starclan, look what that race did to her beautiful fur! While Sootstorm continued talking, she quickly licked down every tuft of fur that was sticking out. Honestly, did Sootstorm just talk to hear his own voice? It wasn't a very nice voice, not as nice as hers anyway.

Then he stopped talking. Finchpaw looked up to meet her mentor's expecting gaze. Did he ask her something? What was she supposed to say? He asked something about running and prey, right? Oh, he was asking what to do if she couldn't catch up to the prey? What, was he a mouse-brain as well? He's the mentor, not her! "You should be hunting with your patrol, so if you miss the catch someone else would catch it instead," Finchpaw answered confidently, resisting the urge to add 'mouse-brain' after.

Sootstorm's tail twitched irritably as Finchpaw ignored him completely and groomed herself. Nectarflower and Dustpaw had always been so eager to learn, and when he was an apprentice he was too. Little did he know that his third apprentice would think grooming herself was more important than learning how to hunt.

Her answer was decent. Rude, but it served the purpose. "Well then, if you already know so much, why don't you try hunting something for us? I'm sure you'll get it the first try," Sootstorm continued, his eyes narrowed. Normally, he wouldn't dream of being petty with a newly-named apprentice, but Finchpaw was different. She needed to have her face shoved in the dirt.

Finally, they were getting on with the lesson! Finchpaw eagerly jumped to her paws, her grooming finished and her eyes defiantly meeting Sootstorm's. "Of course! Watch me," The dappled she-cat smirked, then turned around in search of her target. Her gaze landed on a young hare quite a distance away. Perfect! Without a second thought, the apprentice hurled herself forward. She sprinted towards the hare, which finally noticed her and darted away. It kicked out with its strong hindlegs, creating a dust cloud right in Finchpaw's face. Gross! It would take a whole day to wash it out of her fur. Furiously, Finchpaw lunged forward, breaking through the dust cloud with her claws out and ready to sink into the hare's fur.

Her claws sank into the hare's flesh, and immediately Finchpaw pulled the bucking creature towards her and snapped it's neck in the same way she had watched the other apprentices do with their prey. Proudly, the she-cat dragged the huge hare back to Sootstorm and dropped it at his paws with a smug smile. "Well? How did I do?" She asked innocently.

OOC: since the topic started in Greenleaf, we'll continue using those rolls

Sootstorm had to admit, Finchpaw was good for an apprentice who had just started learning how to hunt. But he couldn't stroke her ego anymore or she'll explode. "You still have many areas to improve. For example, you hesitated too long when chasing after the hare, and if it wasn't for the fact that there wasn't any burrows around the hare would have been long gone by now. Here, watch me," Sootstorm mewed, then started trailing a rabbit scent. He made sure that Finchpaw was watching, then suddenly burst forward. He darted down the hill, fast as the wind, drawing closer and closer to his prey. By the time it saw him, it was already too late. With the ease of someone who had done it many times before, Sootstorm killed off the rabbit gracefully and carried it back to Finchpaw.
