JUNIPERHEART | SKYCLAN | TIER 2
Juniperheart took a wobbly, unsure step outside of the medicine den. There almost seemed to be part of her that wanted to stay tucked up in that dark nest, nerves bubbling deep in her belly, but her need to see her children overrode any other feeling she could possibly have. Her kits— Stars above, they must be apprentices by now, she thought with a twinge of despair— hadn’t had any proper contact with her since before they could open their little eyes; Juniperheart had fell into a deep and viscous sickness, and life in SkyClan had to continue on without her for a while. It took her moons to recover, more to gain her strength back, and while her clan had been doting all the while Juniperheart wanted nothing more than to just be her again. To be a simple SkyClan warrior again, with Sunfire and their kits.
She cringed. There was not a doubt in her mind that it had been her doing that lead to her illness, StarClan’s punishment for what she had done, but yet she persisted— perhaps they have forgiven her, in some way.
She highly doubts it. She hadn’t even forgiven herself yet.
”Sunfire!” She called from the mouth of the medicine den, giddy smile and excited nerves overtaking any previous thoughts. ”My kits, my darlings!”
She was alive, she was better, and she could finally, finally be with her family. That was all that mattered, at least for the moment.

Creamsky had been loafing outside of the warrior's den, tail flickering back and forh before his eyes flickered open at the sound of a familiar voice, although it had been far too long since it had graced his ears. The sight of Juniperheart at the entrance of the medicine cat's den caused his heart to skip a beat, relief and joy flaring as he pushed himself to his paws. "Juniperheart!" he called out - thought he quickly winced. He ought to let her be with her loved ones in peace but she - she was his old apprentice. His friend. He had been worried sick when she had fell so violently ill - the Clan unsure on if she would pull through for moons.
He had simply chosen not to dwell on it, it seemed it was how he dealt with his grief. He tried not to think of his mother, he had tried not to think about the thin line that Juniperheart had been on for so long. He took a few steps forward before he stopped, tail quivering and lashing as he tried to see if his approach would be welcomed. Not that he didn't think Juniperheart would turn him away but if she wanted time alone with Sunfire and her kits - well he didn't want to impose, they could catch up later. He was just...
He was so relieved to see that she had pulled through and was well enough to stand and move.

Bubblepaw was only a few days into her training, but she was loving every second of it. Rainfrost was the best mentor ever and SkyClan territory was the coolest ever and greenleaf was the best season ever and everything was wonderful. She still spent as much time as she could with her siblings and her dad, as well as her Gramma Wolfblossom and all her many other family members. Everything was perfect. Or, well... almost perfect. She couldn't help but keep up the habit that she had formed as a kit. The habit of glancing towards the medicine den, hoping for just one second that her mother might emerge. That she'd be feeling better. That their family would be whole again. That was what she found herself doing right now as she returned from patrol. Pale light green eyes meeting the mouth of the den's entrance, scanning it with a mix of hope and hopelessness, wondering if today might finally be the day.
Then she stopped short. The entrance of the den was not empty. There was a cat standing in it. A cat whose eyes she had never truly seen open. But they were open now--and they were looking at her. "...Mama?" The word came out breathlessly, almost unfamiliar-tasting on her tongue, but with a sweetness that she relished. "Mama?" It sounded better the second time. Bubblepaw was moving now, paws touching off against the ground. A few uncertain steps turned into a gentle run turned into a hard sprint. "Mama! Mama!" And suddenly she was there, and she was pushing her face into her mother's fur, and not even really noticing the deep purr that was rumbling out from every corner of her body. "Mama, it's really you! You're awake!" Her high-pitched voice was unusually strained, and she choked back something that attempted to rise from her throat. There was no time for any of that. Her mother was here. "Mama, Mama, Mama! I missed you so much!"

Rainfrost has been worrying himself sick for a while now. Even as he carried forward in normal life, his mind constantly drifted back to his little sister, tucked up in the medicine den, her fate left hanging up in the air. He’d already lost two siblings to illness, so long ago, when he was too young to even remember them. To lose Juniperheart now, to illness of all things, after she’d carved her way solidly into his heart and made him see the family standing right in front of him… he would not have been able to bear it. He visited the medicine den frequently, hoping that just once she’d open her eyes and smile again. In the meantime, he tried to be a good uncle to his nieces and nephews, and now, most of all, tried to be a good mentor to Bubblepaw.
Rainfrost’s head snapped up at the sound of his sister’s voice, swiveling around to look at the medicine den with wide eyes. “Juniperheart.” He gasped out softly, an explosion of relief and joy expanding in his chest so fast it nearly bowled him right over. By some miracle he stayed standing, and somehow bit down the urge to race right to his sister’s side. It was her children and mate she was calling for, and he could wait, but still. Seeing Bubblepaw race to her mother’s side was enough to make the eyes of the usually stoic tom grow damp with unshed tears.
Padding closer, Rainfrost came to stand beside Creamsky, exchanging a relieved smile with his friend before his gaze returned to Juniperheart. He did not speak or call out, but he waited until he caught her gaze, and simply lifted his tail in greeting. There’d be time to have his own reunion with her now that she was up on her feet, he was sure. For now, he was just happy to see her finally get to interact with her kits. He'd missed her so much.

Having been on the same patrol as Bubblepaw - and returning with a fat pigeon hanging from his maw - Sunfire stepped into camp with his head low, yellow eyes weary. He was exhausted, but not necessarily in a bad way... training with Bearpaw kept him busy, and he'd taken every opportunity to join patrols with the rest of his litter, as well. It was a great way to lose sleep, sure, doing twice the amount of outings as he needed to, but more importantly, it kept him close to his kits, and overseeing each and every one of their training was something that Sunfire was not shy about doing. He trusted the other warriors - well, most of them - and knew that they would train the kits fine if given half the chance... but despite that, Sunfire wanted to be there, he wanted to be present, around them whenever he could because more than anything the five kits were the only thing he had from Juniperheart, and the way things had been looking lately...
No. Sunfire shook his head, unwilling to let that particular train of thought have any more control of him than it already did. Juniperheart couldn't die, because he said so... and he would fight StarClan singlehandedly if they tried to take her.
The golden tom only had time to orient himself towards the fresh-kill pile and take a single step before realizing that Bubblepaw had stopped short, and he careened to the side to avoid stepping on her, nearly taking out another warrior in the process. "What-" he started, but as he followed her gaze, he, too, went momentarily rigid, even as Bubblepaw sprinted across the camp, calling out to her mother.
Her mother. Juniperheart stood in the entrance of the medicine den, looking wobbly on her paws but up, and alive. The pigeon dropped to the ground, forgotten instantly alongside his fatigue, and large paws carried the tom carefully, silently, to Juniperheart's side. He closed his eyes briefly, leaning in to rub his cheek against hers as Bubblepaw bounced around at their feet.

Wolfblossom had returned to camp as well, following on the heels of Sunfire and Bubblepaw. Her son was running himself ragged to keep up with his kits, and Wolfblossom was prepared to nudge him towards his nest for a much needed rest with the promise of the family still being there, but Bubblepaw stopped in her tracks, and her calls were ones of excitement. Sunfire too, had dropped his prey, and Wolfblossom felt her heart lift as her gaze fell onto Juniperheart standing in the entrance of the medicine den. Wobbly, exhausted... But awake.
They weren't the first ones to notice, it seemed. Creamsky and Rainfrost stood beside each other, looking very much relieved to see the she-cat up and about. The deputy bounded forward, a purr rumbling in her throat. "Juniperheart!" She greeted warmly, "It's good to see you out of your nest! How are you feeling?" She made her way to the pointed she-cat's side, offering Rainfrost an affectionate flick of her tail as she passed him. She affectionately nuzzled the top of Juniperheart's head before stepping back to give the harassed she-cat space, though the purr still rumbled in her throat. She had been so worried for her, for a while things hadn't looked good. She was here, though, and her presence brought a sense of relief that Wolfblossom hadn't felt recently.

Sorrelpaw had been kept awake by the excitement and nerves of her recent apprenticeship. She worried if she would make her father and Clan proud; her mother proud. Her mother’s health had kept her awake as she slowly understood the situation more and more, concerned. It was taking her a long time to recover — she could barely remember her scent, if her fur was soft. How desperately she wanted to share her life with Juniperheart, to tell her about the friends she had made and the games she and her siblings played. Hopefully she would recover soon.
The SkyClan apprentice scanned around the camp slowly, searching for one of her siblings to talk to when her eyes stopped suddenly at the medicine cat den, watching as a cat gingerly exited the den.
Was that?
Sorrelpaw paused for a moment, as though she had seen a ghost. It felt as though all air had been knocked from her chest. It wasn’t just any cat. It was her mother. Her mother. Her mother. Was she healed? Would they finally get to see her? Now the young apprentice would be like other cats of the Clan, with their mothers and fathers — now her family was complete. Sorrelpaw’s paws trembled as she watched Juniperheart leave the medicine cat den, calling out to them. Her first thought had been their family — even after all those moons of sickness. She hadn’t forgotten them.
“Mama?” She choked out, her voice barely above a whisper. The other cats around them became invisible as she cried out, “Mama!” Sorrelpaw ran towards her mother, no speed quick enough for how desperately she needed to be by her side. She skidded to a halt to avoid barreling her over, nuzzling her face into her mother’s fur, breathing in her scent; her fur was soft, like down. A small cry left the apprentice as she pressed into her fur, fearful to move in case she left again. Juniperheart was alive - StarClan had watched over her mother. Even if they were practically strangers, she was her mother and Sorrelpaw couldn’t wait to know her. She had missed her more than the stars knew.

But look into the lake, shimmering like smoke.
She quietly and contently watched the clouds above slowly disperse, letting the sun pass through and say hello. Her soft blue eyes relaxed and let themselves close, ready to soak in the sunlight and snooze. Ploverpaw’s tail swished around with pleasure, catching all sorts of leaves and debris in its plume. Her ears flicked to catch the sound of a patrol arriving back home. My family, she thought excitedly, waking to go say hello. Oddly, Bubblepaw’s attention was elsewhere. A voice rang out as Ploverpaw followed her sister’s line of sight… to the medicine den?
“Oh!” she gasped gently. For the moment, she simply stared. It was so different seeing the hickory-pointed molly standing. She looked nothing like Bearpaw. She was sparkling with a soft smile, and glistening sky eyes. She was like a cloud. She was like moss. She is my mother. Ploverpaw unknowingly took a few steps closer while her sisters rushed ahead. Does she know that I'm her daughter?
Her father passed her. She knew how he had feared his mate’s death. Looking around, she realized everyone had been worried. A relief lifted in her chest as did theirs. Everything felt lighter. It’s alright. She started walking closer. It’s all alright now.
The round, grey-footed apprentice stood by Bubblepaw and Sorrelpaw’s sobbing sides, gaze fixed up at Juniperheart. Hello Mom, she wanted to say aloud, though tears overcame her, too. Ploverpaw had always loved her mother. But in this very moment, she was flooded with an entirely new kind of love. A love exclusively reserved for talking to your mother for the first time in moons.
