Perchstar wasn't sure why she was feeling so sluggish. It might have just been the heat of the day getting to her, she supposed. No matter how much water she drank, she always felt thirsty. Moving around only made her more exhausted. But it couldn't possibly have been important. She just wasn't used to the greenleaf warmth. Once she got used to it, then everything would go back to normal. So she waved off Poppyshine's concerns with a few words of reassurance and went off for her hunting patrol. Today she had been paired again with Sunpaw, the bright-eyed tabby tom who proclaimed himself to be Willowpaw's friend. She had nothing against the apprentice. He was nice to her, and apparently to her daughter as well. He had been learning well from Brookstone. So why was it that she felt mildly uncomfortable in his presence? It made no sense.
Well, it seemed that several things were not making any sense today. As they headed off into the territory, Perchstar attempted to take solace in the shade of the few trees that were nearby. The heat was growing so sweltering that the shade offered little reprieve, however. It was all she could do to suppress the urge to pant while they traveled. It would be best if she distracted herself from the strange slowness of thought that she was suffering from. "Would you rather fish, or hunt land prey today?" The leader glanced over at her companion, hoping that his smaller form and thinner pelt would make him more resistant to the weather.
Sunpaw trotted beside his leader, soaking in the warmth of the sun. It was just verging on uncomfortable, all this heat, but it hadn’t crossed over the line just yet. Until it did, Sunpaw simply enjoyed his namesake heating his fur and the soft sand underneath his paws. He glanced at his leader beside him. Honestly, Sunpaw didn’t see what Twistpool had disliked so much about her. Perchstar was quiet and often intimidating to Sunpaw, as he worried about messing up in front of her, but she was nice. Like Rookpaw and Willowpaw were nice. A quiet sort of nice. Sunpaw had found that it was his favorite kind of nice.
Besides, Perchstar was Willowpaw’s mother and Rookpaw’s mentor. How could Sunpaw not like the cat that had such a big role in the lives of his two closest friends? Plus, she was really good at being a leader, as far as Sunpaw could tell about these sorts of things, anyway.
She seemed a little tired today, so Sunpaw had done his best to be a quiet and peaceful companion, rather than annoying. He looked around the territory, whiskers twitching frequently as he fought the urge to investigate distractions. Brookstone has had to gently scold him on more than one occasion for running off out of her sight when he got distracted by spotting something cool.
His whiskers twitched again as Perchstar spoke, and he swiveled his head around to look at her. Offering her a big smile, Sunpaw thought and then said, “Fishing maybe? It’s bound to be cooler by the river, the water’s always cold and all, and plus, I wanna practice with fishing. If that sounds okay!” He chirped.
