As the shadow of Honeylight's passing faded from the forefront of ShadowClan's minds (though his had been just one of several senseless deaths), Leopardsun wasn't the only one left still grieving. No, there was Pineblossom, and Forestbreeze--
And Silverpaw.
Silverpaw, Honeylight's adopted brother and his apprentice.
Who was now without a mentor.
"All cats old enough to silently stalk in the shadows, please gather in the shadow of the Jaggedrock for a Clan meeting!"
Pineblossom heard the call for a new meeting. She was just about to lay down for a nap (what other way was there to pass the time while she was confined to camp?) but she made her way out to the Jaggedrock instead. She took her seat and looked around for Forestbreeze and Silverpaw to accompany her. She was pretty sure they were both in camp as well, and whatever this was for—perhaps a ceremony?—she always preferred to keep with her family…especially after everything that happened with Honeylight.
The sound of Leopardsun’s voice made Silverpaw’s ear flick, and he turned his attention away from the feathers he’d been pulling apart to look toward her. ShadowClan had practically been upended in the last few moons... he wondered what this meeting would be for. Getting to his paws, Silverpaw padded closer to the Jaggedrock, finding his way to Pineblossom in the crowd. He muttered a greeting as he sat then looked squarely at Leopardsun, ears turned forward attentively.
"As a result of recent tragedy," Leopardsun began, the words feeling far too heavy for the moment, "one of our own has been left without a mentor. I believe that an apprentice needs the guidance of a warrior, and so the time has come to assign a new mentor for Silverpaw."
Thankfully, both of the cats she intended to address were already present.
"Silverpaw, from this day until you receive your warrior name, your mentor will be Pineblossom."
She had a feeling that Pineblossom would want to keep close to her remaining child, and while she couldn't say whether it would be comforting for Silverpaw she could certainly hope it would be.
Pineblossom’s eyes widened. She knew that Silverpaw was getting a new mentor, and she had prayed to StarClan that Leopardsun would choose a good mentor for her son. After his tumultuous record, she wanted someone reliable. She had resisted asking Leopardsun personally to allow her to be his mentor because she thought it would be good for him to find companionship in other cats during this important time…but it seemed Leopardsun had the same thoughts as her after all.
Pineblossom stepped forward, bringing Silverpaw with her. She turned to Silverpaw and leaned down to press her nose to his. While they were still close, she murmured, “You’re going to be a wonderful warrior; I’ll ensure it.”
Silverpaw sat up a little straighter when Leopardsun began her address— an apprentice left without a mentor, for too long. An ear twitched back, and he leveled a sharp green stare on her just as she said his name. A nasty part of him twisted and coiled and both ears flattened against his head. He still didn’t want a new mentor. There wasn’t a warrior in this Clan he trusted or cared enough about to value as a mentor, except—
Pineblossom. He would have said Forestbreeze, too, but Silverpaw blinked slowly and looked to the she-cat beside him.
His stomach twisted again. What if something happened to her too, because of him? Silverpaw shook his head and picked up his chin, holding himself tall as Pineblossom led them to the front of the crowd. He leaned forward to meet her halfway at the ceremonial gesture and nodded briskly. “I will be. I promise I won’t let you down.”
