This whole training dilemma was really starting to get the best of Toadlegs. He had been skirting around Storkpaw for what felt like days now, anxious and jittery whenever he’s reminded that he’s actually supposed to be responsible for once. He hasn’t been doing that well, to say the least. He was scared of an apprentice, and that was absolutely humiliating. Even more humiliating than the whole weasel debacle; it’s been months now, and Toadlegs was still anxious of running into another weasel.

Shaking his big-eared head, the gangly black tom made his way over to the apprentice den with noticeable apprehension. Would Storkpaw be mad at him? Certainly it was obvious he had been avoiding her– if it wasn’t for the piling on guilt and humiliation, Toadlegs would still be. But it had been long enough now for Toadlegs to get a grip on himself (or a grip on the idea that he wasn’t actually an apprentice anymore), and finally face his new, amazing, busy life as a RiverClan warrior and mentor.

Toadlegs was terrified, which was even more humiliating than being afraid of an apprentice. Weren’t warriors supposed to look forward to those kinds of things?

”Uh– Storkpaw! Wake up! It’s time for training!” Toadlegs called from the opening of the apprentice den, too afraid to look inside for the little molly. It was warmer than it had been but still a little nippy, sun barely peeking out over the river– hopefully it was too early in the morning for Storkpaw to be angry at him.

OOC: hey starry! I'm so sorry about the delay on Storkpaw's training-- right after she beefed a lot of stuff happened in my family/personal, non-cat life, and I had to step away from WCC for a little while. I'm back now, though! Honestly Toadlegs being too afraid to be a mentor is very in character of him lol

It had been easy for Storkpaw to catch onto Toadleg's apprehension. Although she could be naive, the older tom didn't exactly hide his jitters in the few interactions they'd shared. Still, regardless of her mentor, she was determined to make the most out of her training. And really, he seemed like a lovely cat. Still, it had taken him quite a few days to reach out about training. The delay was noticeable as the rest of her denmates cleared out in the early hours of the morning for their training. Meanwhile, she loitered around camp, similar to when she had been a kit. The young molly would never have approached him if he hadn't first, so she sighed with relief as she spotted him coming towards the den.

She wanted to make him comfortable, and if he needed to take his time, that was his own business. Even if it affected her a lot. Which it did. She had already been awake, but she heeded his call nonetheless, taking a moment to rise out of her nest and enter into the clearing. "Mornin' Toadlegs!" she hummed cheerfully, looking up at him with large, blue eyes.

Toadlegs was filled with immediate relief at Storkpaw’s friendliness, though it did nothing to stop him from shrieking in terror when she appeared suddenly at his side. She was very fast and very quiet, and Toadlegs was very, very skittish. ”Oh! Uh! Hello Storkpaw! It’s-uh- nice to see you! You’re very-er- energetic this morning!” Toadlegs suddenly felt very, very bad about being such a terrible excuse of a warrior. ”We’re going to go out hunting today— maybe if you catch on quick enough, we can do some fishing too. Come on, last one to the camo entrance is a rotten mouse!”

With that, Toadlegs turned and scuttled across the camp towards its entrance, looking far more like a baby deer than a distinguished warrior. Maybe if he just pretended he was an apprentice again, this whole mentoring thing would be easier. No responsibilities or any looming doom of expectations on his shoulders, just two RiverClanners having fun.
