Blackbear's eyes narrowed in concentration. Her claws were unsheathed, and currently making a series of seemingly random lines in the dirt. She herself didn't know what the aim of the game was, but she was so engrossed in the activity that she almost forgot to look annoyed. Almost- her tail-tip twitched as she worked. Crookedpaw was late. As everyone tended to be. Really, she should start showing up to these things later, match the tardiness of what seemed like all of her Clanmates. But then they'd win, she thought with a growl. She was going to follow normal time until these idiots finally caught on and stopped. Being. Late. She dug her claws into the dirt, ruining her hard work: these claw marks were much deeper than the others, it really took her out of it. But she didn't have time to lament the destroyed masterpiece, because as she looked up a familiar black-and-white tom entered her vision.
"Crookedpaw. You're late." She growled at her apprentice, though her tone wasn't as menacing as she would've liked. He was basically still a kit, at least to her, and she couldn't seem to bring herself to actually be angry with him. This surprised even her, and she blinked for a moment as if short circuiting from her own lack of hostility. She turned to face the camp's exit, beckoning him to follow with her tail. "C'mon, we're going to the creek." She was going to teach Crookedpaw to hunt. She would spar with him, but honestly he was still so small to her that she'd probably kill him by accident. And she doubted Birdchaser would take kindly to that. "We're hunting today, pipsqueak. So you can get some food in ya and stop being so... small." Well, he'd definitely grown since he was a kit. But still, he was far smaller than a warrior. No good to SkyClan if a war broke out.
They arrived at the creek, and Blackbear stopped to sniff the air. Yeah, definitely some prey about. Some birds, she smelled rodent too. Even frog, though the smell made her nose wrinkle. Ugh, frogs. "Right, Crookedpaw. Tell me what you smell and hear," she rumbled. She sat down, surveying him.

Today was the day! Today Crookedpaw was going to have his first training lesson with Blackbear. He would learn to fight properly, or maybe to hunt, or just go and observe the different areas in the territory. Whatever his mentor had planned, Crookedpaw was certain he would have fun with it. So he was cheerful and grinning wide as he trotted over to where Blackbear was waiting for him. “Henlo! I am ready f-“
His words were cut off by Blackbear’s scowling glare and snippy words. He tilted his head, confusion evident on his face. “I am…? But you shaid to meet at shunhigh and it’s shunhigh now,” he meowed with a frown. His lisp was getting better as he was getting older, but it was still hard for him to speak properly. He quickly scampered after Blackbear when she got up and started to lead the way. His mood perked up quickly when she spoke about learning how to hunt. He’d never caught anything before, but he knew that it was something important that all warriors did for their food. He would be able to catch his own dinner for the first time!
When they got to the creek, Crookedpaw stood up on the tips of his toes and breathed in deeply. He was quiet for a moment before he replied, “I hear birdsh up in the treesh…I hear the water of the creek…and I shmell a shquirrel that way!” He pointed with his nose and his tail eagerly swished back and forth in the air at the idea of catching and eating a squirrel.

Crookedpaw was a quick learner. The large molly, despite herself, found herself impressed. "Huh, good. Birds are fun, but squirrels are a little easier. They don't fly." She scratched behind her ear, then looked around. She couldn't see any birds or squirrels around, so he'd have to climb either way. "Well, it's your training session. You can pick whatcha want to catch." She stood, sniffing the air again, and approached a tree. She could just barely make out a plume of tailfeathers, high enough to make for a decent climb. "Climbing is the same for birds and squirrels, obviously. It's easy, just watch." With that, she hooked her claws into the rough bark and began to swiftly climb the tree. She didn't bother to slow down for Crookedpaw. She was sure he'd pick it up, he was SkyClan after all.
It was a good few seconds before she was high enough to see the bird properly. It was too busy singing to spot her. What stupid creatures, she thought to herself. Even cats kept an eye out for predators, while these tiny fragile things didn't even look around before they started shrieking incessantly. She crept down the branch, claws keeping her stable, then she lunged with her teeth gleaming. The bird was far too slow in noticing her to do anything and she grabbed it in her mouth, severing its spinal cord in one quick bite. She looked down, gauging the distance- she reckoned she'd look pretty cool to Crookedpaw if she jumped down. Climbing down looked clumsy and took ages, anyway.
With a nod of confirmation to herself, she leapt off the branch and onto the leaf litter below. Thankfully she didn't land on her apprentice, and she dropped the dead bird by his feet. "There. Now you try." She said, giving him an 'encouraging' bat to the shoulder with one wooly paw.
Blackbear attempted to catch a bird. She was successful, costing 3 SP.

Crookedpaw beamed at the subtle praise that Blackbear provided him. It wasn’t a lot—but he’d take it. He wanted to impress her and show what a good warrior he was going to be! Crookedpaw focused on Blackbear as she demonstrated how to climb up a tree. There wasn’t much in terms of instructions, and so Crookedpaw tried to absorb everything he could visually. When Blackbear was, of course, successful, he cheered quietly so as to not scare other prey. “That wash amazing!!”
Still beaming, Crookedpaw adjusted to try and do it too. He found what tree had the smell of prey and crawled up to it. He tentatively put his claws to the bark and tried to climb. He couldn’t hook it the first time, the second time he slid, but the third time he seemed to get the hang of it. Crookedpaw glanced back at Blackbear, silently double-checking that he seemed to be doing alright, and then he started to climb.
He spotted a squirrel chewing away on a nut. Crookedpaw knew that he had to get it…but realized he didn’t really know how to unlatch from the bark now that he was so high up in the air. He looked down at the ground and swallowed thickly, feeling uneasy. He looked back at the squirrel and knew he had to move before it realized that there was a predator right behind it. He leapt at it, managing to snatch it onto one claw—but no other par of him grabbed onto the tree. Crookedpaw yowled as he went tumbling down to the ground and managed to turn over in the air just in time to land on his toes. He landed with stiff muscles and puffed fur. He breathed heavily and looked down at the squirrel, which did not have a cat’s reflexes to land safely and had died upon hitting the ground. He blinked slowly and looked up sheepishly at Blackbear.
Crookedpaw attempted to catch a squirrel! Thanks to +2 in Moonlit Creek, he is successful! -3 SP.
