Whisperear
Whisperear was happy to take Flutterpetal on a patrol now that he was a warrior. They were so proud of their former apprentice. They wondered if this is what Coyotegrin felt when Whisperear had moved onto being a warrior—that drive to still be around and protect, but also, the pride at seeing them be old enough to take on new responsibilities.
“I wonder who long it will be before you get an apprentice of your own,” Whisperear said warmly to Flutterpetal as they took their patrol. “WindClan has gotten several new warriors along with you, and so there’s a lot more knowledge to share. I do think that you’d make a wonderful warrior.”
A tiny voice in the back of Whisperear’s mind told them that there was a strange scent in the air as they continued their patrol, but it wasn’t strong enough to pull Whisperear’s attention away from spending time with the newly-appointed warrior.
Leaf-fall was just on the horizon. Flutterpetal could taste it on the breeze-- he wasn't sure how, or why, but the light chill in the air before the sun rose was telling. He hadn't yet seen a leaf-fall... so he would be excited to see whether the distant forest trees really changed colors, like the elders claimed. For now, the small black tom relished the bright rays that lit up his pelt, warming him to the bone. The peat soil beneath his paws was a comfortable temperature, as well. Why couldn't it just be greenleaf forever?
Turning his attention back to his former mentor-- no, his friend-- Flutterpetal chuckled lightly. "The idea of being a mentor is kinda scary," he admitted, swishing his tail behind him as he walked. "It sounds like a lotta effort. But you did really well, and I'd love to be as good a mentor to someone as you were to me." His nose twitched. Something on the breeze smelled a little different... was that another sign of encroaching leaf-fall, or something else? He ignored it for now. It probably wasn't important. "I'll do it when it comes up, but... I can't say I'm in any rush. Life is pretty nice how it is."

Whisperear smiled at Flutterpetal. “It is nice, having no apprentices,” Whisperear chuckles. “Don’t get me wrong. It was wonderful having you as my apprentice, and I enjoyed teaching Mallardduck too. But it can get tiring, especially for an old soul like me.” They shook their head. “It is nice having simpler things to focus on for a time. I’ll get another apprentice eventually—but hopefully after yours.”
Anything else that was on their mind was interrupted at the sudden shriek of a hawk. The call made Whisperear suddenly identify what that light scent was in the air and they looked up in time to see a hawk dive down towards them with its talons outstretched. Its claws raked against Whisperear and the warrior had just enough time to grab at the hawk’s tail and yank hard, keeping it crashed to the ground. “Flutterpetal-!”
Hawk used Talon Strike, dealing 7 damage and costing 10 SP. Whisperear used Tail Yank, dealing 8 damage and costing 15 SP.
Flutterpetal was enjoying the conversation with his mentor-- but unfortunately, it wouldn't last long. Their quiet, peaceful moment of friendship was shattered quickly at the loud, screeching cry of a diving hawk, aiming down at the two warriors below. Was it territorial? Or simply hungry? Either way, sharp talons dug into Whisperear at a moment's notice, making the tall cat grunt in pain before they reacted quickly with a counter-strike. All Flutterpetal could do was gape in shock, feet frozen to the ground. Then-- once Whisperear hissed his name-- he reacted. "Oh stars oh stars...." he began cursing between quiet, panicking breaths. What did he do? It was on the ground now; Whisperear had stunned it. Fight, you hare-brain! Use your claws! You've sparred before. Just do that... but with your claws unsheathed... but drawing blood... against an angry hawk! An unfamiliar fear was alight in his bright green eyes as the situation dawned on him. Nevertheless, he forced his claws out of their sheathes, and darted forward with a clumsy blow at the bird. It tore through feathers and into flesh. He winced. Was this what fighting was like? How could he be so preoccupied when Whisperear had been slashed?! He shook his head fiercely, trying to shake the shock out of it. "A-are you okay, Whisper?"
Flutterpetal used Front Paw Strike on the Hawk, dealing 7 damage and costing 7 stamina.

Whisperear let out a relieved sigh when Flutterpetal reacted. His movements were stiff and clumsy, his expression alight with fear and shock. It was clear that his former apprentice was distracted. And why wouldn’t he be? Whisperear did not recall actually encountering any predators with him during his apprenticeship, and sparring or training could only prepare you so much for your first actual battle. They replied to Flutterpetal and meowed, “I’m alright Let’s make sure it remembers to not mess with WindClan cats again, hmm?”
They tried to give Flutterpetal a reassuring smile before focusing again on the bird. They raked claws down its back, and the hawk shrieked and struggled on the ground in response. Feathers fluttered out from its frantic wings as it flapped and tried to reorient itself.
Whisperear used Front Paw Strike, dealing 8 damage and costing 7 SP. The hawk is stunned!
Flutterpetal tried his best to calm himself. Whisperear seemed fine... they seemed more focused than him, even. The hawk was pinned snugly between their claws. A few more blows, and the thing still hadn't reacted. He took in a deep breath. Maybe it would all be fine. Trying to reorient himself toward the matter at paw, fighting against the fog of confusion and fear that swirled around his mind, he lashed out with another clawed strike. Maybe, if they killed the hawk, they could bring it back to camp. It might not taste the best, but its feathers would be good to sleep with, if nothing else.
Flutterpetal used Front Paw Strike on Hawk, dealing 7 damage and costing 7 stamina.

Whisperear
Whisperear wanted to tell Flutterpetal that he was doing great, but they were too focused on the threat at hand. The hawk finally got its senses and it took off into the air before Whisperear could attack it again. They wondered if it was going to fly away, but then it turned and began swooping down towards them. It seemed that its anger at being attacked outweighed its desire for survival.
Its claws dug against Whisperear, who didn’t try to move out of the way. Instead, they waited and took the hit so they would reach out their claws and grab onto the hawk’s head. Whisperear threw their weight down to the ground, crashing its head against the dirt. The impact was enough to kill it, as it went still and didn’t try to move again.
The warrior panted for breath and looked back at Flutterpetal. “Great job!” they finally managed to say. “No need to look so nervous. We took it down just fine.” They smiled at Flutterpetal. Their body ached at the pain of the hawk’s talons that cut into their side, but it was nothing that would scar; it would heal in due time, especially after visiting Batsong when they got back. “A hawk will be a great present for the clan.”
The hawk used Swoop against Whisperear, dealing 9 damage and costing 15 SP. Whisperear used Upright Lock, dealing 10 damage and costing 10 SP.
