A New Leaf [Sandypaw]

Having an apprentice seemed so new to Dovesight. She herself was still fairly new to being a medicine cat, although she was also experienced enough to be able to teach the skill. She actually had not taught a cat since she was a warrior, so to have her niece as an apprentice was an odd feeling. But she couldn't leave RiverClan without a medicine cat. She knew first paw how hard it was to learn with no one to guide her, and Cloverheart proved how unpredictable death could be. She hoped that wouldn't come for her anytime soon, but she wanted to be prepared. And in any case, she felt this would also serve well for her niece.

In front of her laid a bunch of herbs, which she was showing Sandypaw.

"So we have a few main herbs that we like to use. These dark green leaves are called dock. You can use those to help with pain, or to prevent infection from forming in a wound. When infection has already set in, though you want to use these plants, with the spiny leaves. That is called horsetail. Coltsfoot, this one with the yellow flowers, can help coughs and stiff joints. These stalks are what we call rush, we can use those to help set bones. We also have mallow leaves, which can help a belly ache. That is these purple leaves here. Feverfew is this one that looks like a small daisy. It helps with fevers, hence the name, but can also help with pain relief. This borage is what we give to a nursing queen to help her produce milk. These are the herbs we will look for today, but I won't mind some more cobwebs, moss, and even sticks if you can find them. As silly as collecting those can seem, they do help a lot. Do you think you can remember all of that? It's okay if not, I can bring these with me so you can see what you need to find. You're not going to remember all of this right away."

So much to dump on one cat, Dovesight knew. But Sandypaw had to learn. This would all work out in the end.

OOC: Okaaayy that was a lot of blabbing. And now here I am starting my own teaching rant xD So I dmed you the herb list, so you know what all is available and where you can find it. That is what we use on herb hunts to reference what it is we want to collect. You can use any herbs you want, and you can categorize them however you see fit. Everyone rolls an effect dice, and that determines what that person finds. A 1 is a failure, or it could mean you find a poison, like deathberries, which staff has separated from the other herbs at the bottom of the list. A 2-3 would be one of the more common herbs, typically what you use everyday. You can have a max of 6 herbs in this category, but you don't have to use that many. 4-5 is the more average herbs. They'll be more useful, and not, like, found everywhere, but they aren't the type you never see at all. You can have, at most, 4 types of herbs here. A roll of 6 is going to be the hardest herbs to find. So for instance, with us being in RiverClan, it might be something in dry soil. You can have 3 herbs at that level. It is your discretion what herbs you use, and how difficult you feel they are, or how useful they would be. And you would post this list at the end of your first post. For example, here is the list for our herb hunt:

1: Rolls nothing or poison
2-3: Rolls sticks, moss, or cobwebs
4-5: Rolls Rush, Mallow Leaves, Dock, or Coltsfoot
6: Rolls Borage, Feverfew, or Horsetail

Sandypaw seemed eager to learn everything, repeating what Dovesight had said. It was a pleasant thought that Sandypaw was taking her training so seriously, she knew a few cats that would let these lessons go right over their heads.

Picking up the herbs, Dovesight led the way out into the territory. Sandypaw had gone right to work, coming back with some nicely gathered moss. The value of the find did not upset Dovesight like it had her apprentice.

"Don't apologize, Sandypaw. This moss is going to help us get water to cats that can't go out to drink on their own. There is no "better" when it comes to herbs. Everything we can find helps."

Sandypaw asked if they could keep searching, and Dovesight nodded, a smile on her face. Her niece was dedicated to the job, Dovesight expected she would be as such when she asked to take her on as an apprentice. She would be a good medicine cat indeed.

While Sandypaw went to search for more herbs, Dovesight went off on her own search to see what she could find.

Rolling over a log, Dovesight managed to find some cobwebs hidden underneath, which she rolled up with her paw. Maybe this would prove her point on all herbs being useful.

It felt good seeing Sandypaw so happy to get her next herb. Even if it was just as common as the moss she found earlier. "We use those to help stop bleeding. You'll be using those a lot, since cats are always getting injured."

Sandypaw was catching on quick, and Dovesight thanked the stars above for that. She was basically a natural at being a medicine cat.

Dovesight gathered a final bundle of moss before turning to her apprentice. "So, do you think we're ready to head back? I don't think we are going to find any of those herbs around here."
