thawing out some fishsticks [closed]

Egretstorm arched her back and stretched, scoring the wet earth with her claws, letting the other cats (that were living, they had a few incorporeal guests as well) on the patrol pass beside her. This was the dawn patrol and she admitted she might still be a little asleep. But right now she needed to keep her wits about her; while Newleaf was generally a season that received warm welcomes, the stout warrior secretly hated it. Not for any superficial reason, no, there was just something that annoyed her about how flippantly the unexperienced could treat this season change. Snow melted. That part alone was a relief. However, meltwater must go somewhere, and to get to that somewhere it might take a few cats with it, in the form of swollen, hungry rivers and streams.

Perhaps the lingering stench of rot was just putting her in a bad mood. All she could do was hope that the warming temperatures didn't make things worse.

The grey tabby looked over to her apprentice, looking her over with a careful eye. "How are you feeling now, Martenpaw? Are the wounds causing you any problems?" She had recently been attacked by an unscrupulous Thunderclanner - and apparently it was the same cat that had injured Poppypaw the other day. How in the world ThunderClan thought RiverClan would tolerate this, she didn't know.

Dovepaw was glad that hers and Martenpaw's mentors were taking them out on patrol together. After what had happened, she was worried about her sister. She was lucky to have such a good, close relationship with all of her littermates, but that also meant that she got scared when stuff like this happened. Now, Dovepaw was not a violent cat, not in the slightest. But in that moment, she wanted to rip the fur off the cat that had done this to her sister.

Spotting some fish in the river, Dovepaw decided to try her paw at fishing, if only to ease her mind. While a hawk had interrupted her last hunting trip with Tinypool, she had showed her how to do it, even if she did not get a chance to practice herself. So maybe it was a good time now, especially with her mentor already here.

Crouching at the edge of the river, she waited for a fish to come close to her. And then....

Dunk!

Instead of using her paw, Dovepaw had submerged her head under the water, realizing now that Tinypool had not yet had time to show her how to strike. Still, when she surfaced, she did manage to have that fish in her jaws, even if she was wet and sore (fish apparently don't like to stay still in a cat's mouth.)

Tinypool trotted as the patrol made their way to the river, just to keep up with the pace. During the whole travel, the young molly kept her eyes on the apprentices, Darkglow's kits. Thanks to Starclan, she had managed to keep Dovepaw safe but Martenpaw... Why was Thunderclan being so aggressive these past days? Was it the Dark Forest influence?... She was worried about her friend Atalante, who might be involved in this sudden burst of attacks on Riverclan. Was she safe?

The dark-furred warrior was lost in her thoughts when they suddenly arrived at their destination. She checked quickly the perimeter, hoping no Thunderclanner will be in sight. When she was certain no odd scent was in the air, Tinypool turned her focus to her apprentice. Unexpectedly, a large fish was in the she-cat's mouth, whose face was wet. Tinypool smiled brightly and purred to Dovepaw. "Good job, Dovepaw! That's a nice fish you got there. But, let me clean your fur..." The warrior approached the apprentice and licked her forehead, hoping to dry her wet fur.

After grooming her enough, the warrior took a step back and mewed. "That's one way to catch a fish and is valid. Though I wouldn't recommend it during leafbare unless you want to get sick. Here, I'll show you an alternative." With no further words, the petite she-cat made her way to the river and just like Dovepaw, crouched at the edge for any sight of a fish... A silvery shape appeared in sight and she quickly extended her front paw to hit the animal out of the water. Scared and confused, the prey started trashing the air in an attempt to escape. But Tinypool's move was designed for the fish to land on the shore. Quickly, the dark warrior bit down the animal until it stopped fighting back.

This was the first time the ruddy-colored apprentice had exited camp since the incident. A gnawing bit of worry had lodged in her mind, but having Dovepaw with her helped ease that worry. She still found herself sticking close to the group, however. "No problems, just a little sore, that's all..." she mewed in response to her mentor's question. It wasn't entirely true. Her limbs were aching, and every movement made her bones stiffen. There's no need to cause a ruckus or arouse worry. I'm good to go for now. Besides, I need to catch up on my training.

Trying not to lag behind, the apprentice shifted into a quicker pace, knowing that her body would surely complain about it later on. The river! A bubble of excitement was rising in her, Dovepaw's eager attempt to fish only adding to the feeling. An amused grin spread on her maw. "You caught one!" she exclaimed, suppressing a giggle. Tinypool's example was very much less wet and the apprentice watched with intent. Copying the warrior's movements, she gave it a go.

In a fluid motion, her paw slipped into the water. Eyes on the selected target, a quick bat up, and the fish flopped onto the bank. Just as Tinypool had done, she finished the prey off with a swift bite. I did it!

Martenpaw attempted to catch a fish; it was successful!

Egretstorm watched her apprentice for a moment, wondering if she was telling the honest truth, but left it at that. She settled beside their little bank and peered in. The morning light danced across the bottom in mesmerizing dapples. The water’s surface rippled chaotically as Dovepaw, Tinypool, and Martenpaw caught their fish in turn. “Nice! Those are a pretty good size.” Leaving a smile on her maw she scanned the water for anything trying to camouflage against the riverbed. Though her typical method was to dive in head-first - her heavy bones letting her sink to the bottom rather quickly if she wanted to - perhaps that would go directly against what Tinypool was trying to teach. Well, the older warrior’s method wasn’t for more slight cats anyway. She spotted something with glimmering scales and before her brain recognized what it was, her body was already in motion. Lunging forward with claws outstretched, she nabbed the thing and hauled it ashore, much to its surprise. The fish thrashed and slapped its tail, yet her claws were firmly in its back. There would be no escape. Due to its spiny fin she couldn’t reach its backbone, but she elected to crack its skull with her teeth instead.
