Harsh Winters [O]

Frostgaze had decided that there was one part of the territory that Shadowclan had been neglecting, the Carrionplace. It was their one advantage over the other clans, even if the rats there were potentially dangerous. Rats were not the most delicious prey, or the easiest to catch, but with any luck the rats would have been eating well and becoming fat. Then they'd be slow and easy. That'd be useful, since his neck had still made him stiff and sore. Still, it didn't take long for him to be back out patrolling again, he was slightly too stubborn to be out for too long.

As soon as he stepped into the Carrionplace, there was a small number of rats gathered around something. The patrol's pawsteps sent them skittering, and Frostgaze immediately bolted after one, assuming anyone else would do the same. Locked on, he pounced, just barely getting his paw on the rat's tail, but that was all he needed. He reeled it in and delivered a killing blow, watching to see if anyone else on the patrol had as well. At least it'd be one piece of prey to bring back to camp.

Rookfire followed Frostgaze on the patrol to the Carrionplace. Of all of the places in ShadowClan, Carrionplace was one of the places that he remembered the least, due to him rarely choosing to go to the area. All he heard about it was that it was a place full of rats and disease, but when the prey was so scarce to find he knew that the clan had to hunt here.

The black tuxedo searched for a rat to try to catch here. That's what was normally found here, right? Rats? Noticing a rat run past him, the black tuxedo began stalking it, keeping his haunches low to the ground. He wasn't an apprentice for very long, but he thought that he could catch it. Before he could pounce on it, however, a weasel caught it before he could. "Hey!" he said, hissing at it. The weasel was much smaller than him, but it seemed undeterred, gripping on Rookfire's leg. Snarling at the weasel, the black tuxedo bit at the smaller creature, trying to get it off of him. This wasn't exactly how he expected to start his day.

Rookfire attempted to catch a mouse, costing 7 stamina.

Weasel used Gripping Bite on Rookfire, dealing 7 damage and costing 15 stamina.

Rookfire used Snap on Weasel, dealing 8 damage (+1 due to Night Finesse) and costing 7 stamina.

'Hunting Dice' : 10

Snowpaw has been with the patrol, but had held back. She’d never been to this part of their territory before. But when she saw the weasel attack her Clanmate, she knew she had to act. She slipped around behind the furious weasel, and grabbed its tail. Biting down hard, she yanked with all her might, trying to pull it off of Rookfire.

Snowpaw used Tail Yank, dealing 8 damage (night boost included) and costing 15 SP.

Snowpaw:

Swiftheart's ears twitched hearing the commotion nearby from her patrol mates.

She spotted the Weasel attacking Rookfire and she yelped in concern.  Without hesitation she charged towards the angry little predator that Snowpaw had pulled off him and lept at it without holding back.

With her jaw open wide she chomped down on the weasels neck as hard as she could not wanting it to hurt her clanmates any more.  She was in full on protection mode and this weasel had made its final mistake by messing with her loved ones/clanmates.

Swiftheart used SNAP for 8 dmg and costing 7 sp

WEASEL is KO! and can no longer fight!

The weasel scurried away badly wounded, it would not be bothering this patrol any longer.

Swiftheart hurried over to Rookfire and inspected the black tux cat.  His leg was bleeding from the stupid weasel...

She looked at him worriedly... well... it doesnt look terrible... but you are a medicine cat...and know way more about this than I... are you gonna be okay? she asked voice full of love and concern in a motherly type of style.

I can help you back to camp if you need she quickly added on.

She turned to snowpaw and grinned Good job Snowpaw! way to step in and attack that weasel! she praised the apprentice
Good job controlling it and dragging it off him she elaborated.


Just then, she spotted a fat rat behind Rookfire as she was talking with them, she flicked her tail at it signaling she was gunning for it. If Rookfire needed help back to camp she still would go with him back but she wanted to catch something as well,  the fresh kill pile was dangerously low.

She crouched low stalking the fat rat...

When she was close she pounced at it!


(Rolling dice... its a 1! catch is a success and the best kind of success  (the lower the better for hunting dice) )

The fat rat was super slow and did not see her coming until it was far to late.  It did not stand a change and in a moment it was over with a quick nip to the neck.

She held it in her jaws grinning "Thanks starclan" she whispered remembering to say thanks for the prey she was able to catch.

She kept a close eye on Rookfire making sure he was still alright.

Ratrunner followed behind the patrol, yellow eyes sharp for any sign of prey. The Carrionplace was not a frequent spot for hunting by yourself, or in pairs, so he was less familiar with it. Too many of his namesake. Rats — and especially these ones, who fed on rot and refuse — grew dangerous and bold, used to much more fearsome creatures than themselves. His mother warned him of their filthy teeth. ’Do not get bitten by one,’ she cautioned sharply.

I don’t plan on it. The snow here melted into icky, dark-colored mush — not merely mud, though. The air here hung with a foreign smell, a mix of sickly-sweet rot and sharply-tinged earth. But there was prey, and the venture was sufficiently distracting. Swiftheart seemed in better spirits, and he had yet to spend time with Rookfire—

Who suddenly snarled. Before Ratrunner could move to assist, twin white pelts rushed in: and the creature was dealt with. A rat? No... a weasel. A bit small to think of hunting these rats, but maybe it was drawn in by other prey... it’s not as if there’s easy pickings elsewhere. It was why they were here, after all.

He padded closer, and nodded to Swiftheart and Snowpaw. “Are you all right?” he asked Rookfire, brow creased in concern. It didn’t seem a large wound, thankfully. With a flick of his ear, he heard the sounds of a catch and Swiftheart’s voice, and turned.

“Good catch!” he called softly, with a small smile. It didn’t... quite reach his eyes, but they rarely did recently. Hearing a rustle to the side, the small tom immediately raised his head — but it fled, its worm-like tail slipping away.

Shypaw had been last to slip through the silver mesh separating the marsh from the carrion place, and the paw steps of the patrol had already sent the rats scurrying away. She had rushed quickly and silently after the fat prey, a blessing in this harsh season.

Her head snapped up when she heard Rookfire's hiss but Snowpaw and Swiftheart leapt in to fend off the small predator, words of concern exchanged. Shypaw's white ears twitched and she kept one silvery eye on Rookfire, anxious for his answer, while she continued to search for prey.
